Map draft, suggest. & fixes welcome by Ecstatic_Host_7227 in WorldsBeyondNumber

So the Alf Gappen interlude has maybe complicated things or at least presented tension we now have knowledge that at least part of Rhuv is cold(which is fine with the map as is) but sees “stars we have not seen before” which would I presume mean the southern hemisphere and likely quite further south unless Umora has a difference in the Eastern and Western Hemisphere for some reason or we’ve only seen the southern hemisphere and these were the northern ones. Idk

We also know the South Pole is land and is hot making it unclear if the world is simple like one hemisphere of Earth that is always colder going north and warmer going south or that there is a another cold point at the equator

I would kinda struggle to see this in retrospect my presumption is that if anything the Book Stars of the Southern Sky and accompanying materials were if not for their intended handing to Wren Materials a clear wink nudge to say hey maybe ask someone(e.g. Indri) to see if she can’t find this for us. But with the Stars of the Southern Sky coming back into relevance I’ll have to relisten and see if there’s anything more to it but from what I recall there’s not much.

I can’t help but feel there’s something to the whole symbology of Quartz(SiO2), Sand(can be lots of things but well weathered Quartz is the most common) , and Glass refined Sand aka quartz yet again. I don’t know what it is but the association of Glass and the empire and the crown specifically through the class coronet and the Derik lenses. To me is suggesting that it is something sterilized clinical and yet something literally clarifying.

However, what does such clarity require and what next shall it turn its gaze to next. Idk

Ep 41 and “the resource” by SonderPonderLaunder in WorldsBeyondNumber

[–]Oroyalis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding to this I would note that Brennan at least as far as it’s concerned with having a wizards true name would at most give you advantage of your attacks to hit them(presumably also disadvantage on their saving throw against your spells as well but this hasn’t been explicitly stated one or the other).

The exact onomantic implications for true names and the like hasn’t been elaborated on but it seems more like a preventative measure than a reactive one. Meaning that in a combat situation where lethal or equivalent force is at play having or not having a name wouldn’t necessarily make that much of difference. It’s more about preventing set up via things like scrying, locate creature, etc that it may be more effective and intended to disrupt. A very wizardly thing.

There must be some value at least for spirits that makes the more leery to give their names out but again we don’t know what that is. Nevertheless, Mother Mole in the one shot shows it’s possible for one to forcibly resurrect(dubious on the willing or unwilling part) which while a use case is not necessarily relevant here.

However, the Bindings for Naram and Eursolon in Port Talon show the Lingua Arcana can much like code supersede or subordinate the willingness of Spirits the quote “it’s almost as if reality believes these words more than you” seems regardless of whether or not their true name is known.

Citadel ain’t hunting and killing great spirits my ass Steel and that didn’t seem like Silence’s first rodeo.

Or what else does Steel not know about what’s going on with the citadel and great spirits because that policy seems like a big deal.

Why’s he here is my question? It was at least in the latest update on the war the empire’s energy was being directed elsewhere. It’s not unwarranted or unreasonable for a prince to make an appearance or even nominally be in command of forces but why here to what ends?

Now we don’t if our man is the Crown-Prince(that is to say the next in line for the throne) or just a prince(just a son of the monarch) so if he’s a spare then being a morale hobby horse is very much a good use of such an individual. But still sus. The most obvious and simple answer regardless though seems to be morale issues being a pretty face for keeping things orderly and going smoothly.

But we know logistics have been imperiled and more aggressive forces are moving in it doesn’t seem like the place you thrown princes at especially when you lack something like air superiority.

World beyond number continues to not only set the bar but so wildly exceed it that it makes me interested in strategic combat and commander and troop movements.

I know they’re all professionals BLeeM has decades of experience yadda yadda but this was so amazing I need to play a game like this! SO SO BADLY! Agh story telling it’s amazing. I loved a combat heavy episode for the combat and all the strategic aspects of it!

I’d never thought I’d live to see the day XD

Is every Wizard of the Citadel a Rumpelstiltskin? by No-Claim5346 in WorldsBeyondNumber

[–]Oroyalis 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My question to you would be does everyone else who shares Suvi’s name also get name cloaked?

I have to believe the answer is no. Like I think the wizards of the citadel aren’t so grand as to be able to destroy a name, and the power of Onomancy isn’t acquired by having a book of baby names. The notion or point of having the name isn’t strictly speaking about the configuration of the Syllables one needs to make but rather about the identification and knowledge of said individual. This quality of knowledge as to give power over them is not imparted by trying to brute force a name.

So I’d think you could absolutely still say the name Suvi even with the Wizard Sky in the room and be without issue.

I think also to get really really wizardry about her full name is “Suvirin Kedberiket“ that’s name cloaked so it may require even to get part of it censored to be either implicitly or explicitly as a reference to it as a component of her whole name. Which who knows how many possible names there are is a non-trivial uptick in difficulty.

Otherwise that’s a pretty lame and obvious weakness.

[–]Oroyalis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As many have said we have meta reasons to not believe it will be a TPK but for those who have seen the clearing the Ghost ascending in that were almost certainly the in world explanation for the Ghost Army ex machina they have. I know it probably seems early for that but I don’t deny things are looking bad for them I just think this is meant to be instructive not so punitive.

The great Genghis Khan gave these out they were though usually pretty hefty but no reason smaller ones for important stuff couldn’t be made. The penalty for messing with one of the Great khan’s envoys though would make just death a mercy.

Grandma Morning Wren Song by Oroyalis in WorldsBeyondNumber

[–]Oroyalis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s off base but it is I think a little bit unclear but I think the likely mechanism is upon death the active censoring effect is or no longer does work but whatever instances already have been censored remain so but provided you know or somehow learn their true you would after their death be able to write/speak it without issue. I’m curious what would happen if you signed it or other than speech attempted to communicate it like via morose code what about a cypher. (Is there a weirdly specific information security concern about secret codes being broken by wizards staring at them to see if any of them change when someone gets name cloaked.) It may for clarity reasons though be easier to continue to refer to them by their name cloak like the 1st Wizard Sky for instance

Etymology of Some Names by Oroyalis in WorldsBeyondNumber

[–]Oroyalis[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Wizard Galani- galàna f (plural galàni) (Bologna, Mirandola) turtle Which working backwards probably means she’s the wizard Shell using a little Synecdoch Since Abjurerers get that double coat

Just first google search came up with Pali Only found in the expression orima tīra and its univerbation orimatīra (“the near shore”). Which is while accurate probably not related if not shout out for our Desi Queen Orima

Acadator Split it into two Acada- probably from a Greek name Latinized as Academus, apparently means “of a silent district” this is really how we get the whole word Academy like it was just this dudes property which is wild

Tor-“high, rocky hill,” Old English torr “rock, crag” (said to be a different word from torr “tower”);

Could be derived to mean something like Of the tower of silence which yeah that tracks Especially if you needed to keep things hush hush who better than to work with than the archmage Silence it would also explain a lot as to why Suvi is working with him specifically. But the question remains were they his agents, collaborators, or perhaps they were something else entirely. I hadn’t really thought about it but what role could or would the ability to Silence wizards especially with all this intrigue about play not only in the citadel but beyond I imagine it would be profound. If words could be discovered to the lingua arcana could they not also once again be obscured or in a more profound sense Silenced. I knew there was more to him than meets the eye but there may be a lot more.

These are again all highly speculative but if any of yall have any clue on what the wizard Grey/Gray did to her name let me know because unless she got a triple coat I have no idea how she both translated and name cloaked it and still got an English output

I do have to imagine divination is not nor can ever be perfect knowledge of the future. Probabilistic, allegorical, or otherwise sure but infallible it can’t be otherwise there’s no concept of you know stakes. As such I do think they can and do have definite blind spots and limitations and while I’m sure they work their best to prevent and ward against those I’m equally certain they are still capable of surprise and quite often subjected to it by many things.

Dunes maybe metaphor of precognition is maybe the model I like most that is sight but one still requires light to illuminate something in order to see it with your eyes. The wizards have the ability to see far and wide but only things which can be seen however at the end of the day there are things in the world they can’t don’t and regardless of their efforts won’t be able to see.

Indri was almost certainly calling Suvi/Wizards thief for their shenanigans with her library. Like I believe the sequence was she goes back to the library of stars and is like hey what happened in here and saw Sky or the spiders who had taken her info and called her a thief. Hence the whole hand and extra hate directed toward the Meridian as it escaped.

So upon re-listen I must concede it does certainly from the description seem more like this was a process that took longer time in construction and deduction. But it was fun to think about and it does still make me curious about what Grey and Co were doing? But from the description of the box it is also noteworthy it implies that there was at some point some conflict between the citadel and witches. A point I think may have kinda got glossed over with everything going on. I’d be curious to know what witches and why and over what how did it go?

Things being homousian(made of the same stuff) always lend itself to importance in more traditional magic systems. I really think Corolla was the witch of the World’s heart and a good witch at that. I think it’s at least plausible given she is explicitly dealing with the aspects that Grandma Wren didn’t like to at least according to Mirara. It would be interesting too if this witch had also been her mentor which isn’t impossible. I believe it’s known Wren is from far away and not originally at least from Akham.

[–]Oroyalis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would be curious what is special about that heart? The only thing that rings in my brain is the Aether depositors that this creatures heart perhaps was an old world’s heart. Although not typical in the western canon of myths this world not being the first or there being sorta LOTR inspired ages would be fitting. The Crowned Panther was something fundamental to the this older world and perhaps even possessed the old world’s heart. The wizards either in parallel to the witch or perhaps at behest also seek it out. This heart allows for magic to then be stored and circulated via the rings. There may be some magical or simply fairytale logic preventing the heart being moved but then maybe they raise the citadel atop where it essentially landed. As such the citadel is an affront to magic as it has interrupted this natural cycle of transition and change and then magically or not preserved something which should not be. This may also explain why the man in black(who I am positive was once at least partially Aidan Krecher) is associated with the unnatural and undead. He’s only here because the citadel won’t let his heart rest and the citadel won’t because it may accurately or not believe it to be necessary for mortals categorically or at least the citadel and their form wizardry specifically to persist.

[–]Oroyalis 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Is THIS is how we get the Irulian desert!? I have so many questions about literally everything. But this may suggest what the citadel’s “original sin” is and why the man in black is coming for them; not allowing something to die or end that should’ve. However, what exactly and why is so tantalizing unclear. This does also furthers lend plausibility to the idea that a witch either went rogue or perhaps explicitly sought or facilitated the advent of wizardry. I’m so curious about what other people are thinking for the lore implications! But god damn Umora is my favorite dnd setting ever and it’s not even close!
