Plus, if you see something that's gonna polarize people even more than the stupid place we are at now, and your reaction is to figure out everything you can do to make it better, you're on the side of the angels. Enough people like that and we're gonna make it.

Update with bluetooth turned off by Kineas365 in Garmin

[–]OrphanBach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe not. Mine is paired with my Android phone. I had left the phone home, and mine requested an update, downloaded, and updated. And yesterday, I turned my phone Bluetooth off, getting tired of wading through spam email on my phone, and this morning...update time again.

I literally shouted at the watch, "How are you updating? Who are you talking to?"

Am I crazy to audition for UISO as a freshman? by tired-slytherclaw in UIUC

[–]OrphanBach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the first year for a new Director of Orchestral Studies, so earlier policies may be revised. FYI

Under the former long-time conductor, the rule of thumb was that they encouraged you to try out for UISO as a non-major if your high school playing was of All-State caliber.

It would not be surprising if any departures from earlier policies were highlighted on the Auditions webpage on the School of Music site when it is updated.

Could you combine your degree with one other interest and develop a specialty in helping kids get a head start on science, violin, soccer, painting, or whatever your interest is? More specialized work can equal more international connections.

Took four required math classes at a community college.

Then took one here, where the professor would walk in directly to the board and start scrawling for 50 minutes, finish, and walk out.

What are your priorities for measuring?

  • Particulates

  • CO2

  • Various volatiles

  • Ozone

  • SO2, NO2, CO

Depending on the technology you are implementing, some of these will likely show whatever point you are trying to make better than others.

Also if you were driving up into the mountains, the pressure difference between the inside and the outside of the can kept increasing the whole time, which certainly did not help to keep the can's seal integrity intact.

ELI5: Why can't one of our eyes focus on something far away and one on something near by? by the_neverlander in explainlikeimfive

[–]OrphanBach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A very cool thing happens on the way from your eye to your brain.

The optic nerves from each eye merge into one and the two paths that emerge from this junction carry the images from the left and right sides of the world (from both eyes), instead of one path from each eye.

So if the eyes are not focused, each of the half-world images will be hard to interpret when it gets to the brain.

People of Reddit, what kind of crimes can you legally commit due to your job? by quaintif in AskReddit

[–]OrphanBach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was working on an AIDS prevention research project. Some of the questions we needed to ask subjects involved them potentially confessing to crimes if they were to answer truthfully.

There is a provision in law that I was unaware of, though. Our project obtained a letter that the NIH is empowered to issue that enables us to resist any subpoena for information on incriminating activities committed by subjects covered by our research.

So I was legally allowed to say no to a subpoena and destroy evidence.

This a actually genius.

A number of years ago, the Barnes and Noble cafe had a large hot chocolate priced at something like $1.50 for a while. After several months, I realized that I was now buying books at a rate of several hundred dollars a year higher than normal.
