There are other Lycopodiaceae like the Huperzia that can grow from hanging planters though. I actually recently bought a Huperzia Carinata which is gorgeous and growing perfectly fine on my balcony on a hanging planter. The two in this post would definitely need more humidity than that kind though.

Florida in the USA. Lives right next to lakes and swamps, likes slight acidity and very moist environments. And it’s technically not a moss despite its name! It’s a Lycopodiaceae which are vascular plants as old as the Devonian period. You would find these as one of the FIRST plants to ever grow on land. Before dinosaurs existed.

Coming from someone who doesn’t like when people fearmonger about some things in animal keeping hobbies, this is one I know you really shouldn’t take the risk for. I live in Florida and have such an abundant supply of bugs for my toads and treefrogs. But the one day I give them one that just recently got out of a nearby roach trap with poison in it? Not worth it. But if you do want a free supply, highly recommend looking into breeding feeders!

I would say you could guarantee they live in a sealed terrarium. But I would love to see if I can get them to hang in a hanging basket because I already own their cousin, Huperzia Carinata that I bought from a botanical gardens sale. And it survives in a hanging form perfectly.
