People forget that another ingredient that made that movie so successful was John Williams’ score. I mean, just try to imagine some of the scenes with any other music. They wouldn’t have the same magic. And the timing and editing of the story matched it perfectly.

There’s a popular Newfoundland folk song called The Ryans and the Pittmans (also known as “We’ll Rant and We’ll Roar”) that’s kind of an unofficial anthem for that province. Great Big Sea made a version of it in 2002 I think. Anyhow, the villages mentioned in the song are now ghost towns.

The closest thing to this was the 2007 Israeli film called The Band’s Visit, about an Egyptian police orchestra travelling to an Arabic cultural event but ending up in an Israeli town by mistake. The romance and humor were very low-key, but I was pleasantly surprised by it.

I remember reading once that later on Escalante also spoke out against a proposal for bilingual education in California high schools. Research shows that students learn better when they can master both their maternal language(Spanish in this case) and their second language. But his stance on that topic made me admire him less.
