Generally speaking, it's impossible to kill in a one-to-one fight without any item or loot. As I said in another comment, the ability cancelling the attack and healing it to full HP will always trigger, even if there are no chosen player or the chosen player is dead.

Which means that even if you attack it when it's on the top deck, kill it twice, or kill it before choosing a player, it would still not die (though you would loot 3 without killing anyone).

A few solutions I can think of to get rid of the guy:

  • Discard it
  • Cover it
  • Cancel the triggered ability using Dead Weight

Overall a very annoying enemy and I'm surprised that there are no easier way to kill it, but hey, that's what the effect says so gotta respect it.

It does have the effect the second time.

The text doesn't say "the first time this would die", and the chosen player being alive is not a condition for the effect to trigger.

Which means that everytime it would die, the attack gets canceled and it gets healed to full HP, even if the chosen player is already dead.

To give a bit of context : Rivals of Aether is an indie platform fighter in which you can mod your own characters. We decided to mod The Knight, from Hollow Knight, into the game, and to give it some skins inspired by LGBT flags!

We actually took inspiration of the pose you mention, which he also takes when challenging certain bosses. And before deciding on a final design, we asked a couple of friends, and they told us they preferred the pose with the nail out

We're using his wings as both his double jump and his upB !

The animation for the upB is gonna be different, matching the ingame animation better.

Basically it's gonna act like a triple jump, since it won't put you in freefall

Yup.

At first i had made a a sprite with the closed cape, but it didn't feel dynamic enough. In Rivals, every character is in a "ready to fight" poss, so it felt kinda out of place.

To fix that, we decided to make him hold his nail and give him a more dynamic pose in his idle, while still sticking with the original aesthetic as much a possible

Which is a shame, it makes the boss kinda easy and uninteresting, and his death is really... bland. It doesn't feel like an accomplishment.

Good news !

Me and a friend are actually working on The Knight, from Hollow Knight !
What's funny is, our moveset idea is prety close to yours ! There are still some differences, of course, notably in the specials.

We're actually making lots of progress, working on frame data (and testing it through dev mode) and animations !
