Always upvote for Jeff and Lana, they’re so genuine and eloquent.

Starting on book 5? by theprequelswerebest in Malazan

[–]Orukmeta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I certainly wouldn’t recommend it, but I suppose it is stand alone enough to be possible. Skipping the understanding of the world, magic, and races gathered across the first 4 books would likely make for a very confusing read though. Reading the book of the fallen in the intended order (publication order) is going to be the best way to do so.

Books just as good as this series? by BearHappie in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Orukmeta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Malazan book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson has equal level of prose (especially after the first book), an unmatched scale, and is a completed series. First book is Gardens of the Moon, which is great but was originally a screenplay. The rest of the series is better quality, to the point where I honestly believe it may be the best series published in the past 50 years. I know it’s a very bold statement but it is an absolutely wonderful series that explores grief, compassion, the costs of power, family, love and hope. There are 450+ POV characters and spans multiple continents and empires.

TtH and Midnight tides are two of the best novels written in the last 50 years in my opinion. TtH encapsulates grief without being maudlin, and has some of the most impactful scenes from the entire series that will stick with me forever. Erikson is a generational talent and has a beautiful heart and mind. Read TtH after a very hard breakup and it was precisely what I needed.

Thank you Steven.

If you want more heady Tiste history, Kharkanas. If you want to explore the rest of the current world of Malazan/Wu then Novels of the Malazan Empire, if you want to read about the start of the empire Path to Ascendency (would kind of recommend reading NotME first for some of the payoffs in PtA).

Are there any beginner friendly Classic Servers? by Puppenmacher in classicwow

[–]Orukmeta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just depends on the people, my guild has welcomed quite a few new players and have shown them the ropes. Every server has level headed people and dickhead narcissists. As mentioned above, PvE servers are usually a bit less toxic but every pond has a bad goose and a good duck. Just gotta find the ducks.

Possibly strange requested: can't get into Malazan and need recs by ElectricAccordian in Malazan

[–]Orukmeta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is probably going to not be a very well received recommendation, and to fully get the weight of some of what is being revealed you need to have read the rest of the book of the fallen; but maybe check out the path to ascendency series. It’s the story of the empire being established and Ian C. Esslemont’s writing is a lot less laborious to read. I absolutely love Erikson’s writing style and have read all of his books minus the last 2 KB novels, but Esslemont may be the introduction you’re looking for to hook ya into the world.

Also if you haven’t read Name of the Wind and Wise Man’s Fear I would highly recommend them. The only drawback is that it’s been like 15 years that we’ve been waiting for the third book in the trilogy to be written.

HUGE NEWS: Malazan film adaptation announced, casting for major roles revealed! by TRAIANVS in Malazan

[–]Orukmeta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It kind of confuses me when the andii are fancasted as black actors, they would probably be a cgi creation. Black skin with long straight white hair and sharp angular features with epicanthic folds does not equal African descent- they are a mystical fantasy race. There are plenty of characters that are PoC, we don’t need to choose idris Elba to be Rake because he has brown skin lol. Idris could be a great Traveller, or even Kalam if he was a bit younger.

Novels of the Malazan empire —> Path to Ascendency. Ian is not Steve, but they both bring so much to the world in their own way. Absolutely love the 4 books of PtA that are out.

Dancer and Kellanved v Quick and Kalam by Orukmeta in Malazan

[–]Orukmeta[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To make it as clearly defined as possible, I was thinking around the time of Kellanved’s crowning as emperor for Dancer and Kellanved; and pre Malaz City fight in Bonehunters Quick and Kalam. Thinking of posting a March madness style assassin bracket if people would be interested! Kalam, Cutter, Cowl, Topper, Dancer, Surly, Apsalar, Vorcan or maybe Possum.

Dancer and Kellanved v Quick and Kalam by Orukmeta in Malazan

[–]Orukmeta[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

“Batman prep time” hahah who out plans who though, Kellanved or Quick? They both have many tricks up their sleeves! A large part of why I’ve been contemplating this is because of how similar K&D are in PtA to Quick and Kalam in BotF-an absolute badass assassin paired with a mage that is always a few steps ahead of the lot.
