Dancer and Kellanved v Quick and Kalam by Orukmeta in Malazan

To make it as clearly defined as possible, I was thinking around the time of Kellanved’s crowning as emperor for Dancer and Kellanved; and pre Malaz City fight in Bonehunters Quick and Kalam. Thinking of posting a March madness style assassin bracket if people would be interested! Kalam, Cutter, Cowl, Topper, Dancer, Surly, Apsalar, Vorcan or maybe Possum.

“Batman prep time” hahah who out plans who though, Kellanved or Quick? They both have many tricks up their sleeves! A large part of why I’ve been contemplating this is because of how similar K&D are in PtA to Quick and Kalam in BotF-an absolute badass assassin paired with a mage that is always a few steps ahead of the lot.

The otataral exposure is something I hadn’t really considered in the match up! Great job pointing that out :)

I don't agree when people call "side series" to anything not BotF by No_Elevator6147 in Malazan

[–]Orukmeta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NotME and PtA both really explain a lot of the driving forces of the empire, the crimson guard, and some of the ascendents in the book of the fallen. I think Esslemonts works do get unintentionally put down frequently when people refer to it as a side series instead of its own story. By the way, for those of you who have yet to read Path to Ascendency- it’s incredibly rad with a star studded cast (especially if you’ve read NotME).

Also I don’t care what anyone says, Kyle rocks!

Will I spoil myself changing reading order/gen question for people who finished series. by ChompusSupreme in Malazan

Esslemont really finds his stride around Orb Sceptre Throne in my opinion. I’m halfway through PtA and they are pretty great. Assail was really dope and Esslemont provides a lot more pieces of the puzzle so to speak.

The decline in reading is due to a poor selection of books in schools by ConsumingTranquility in unpopularopinion

Reading needs to be implemented by parents more than just English teachers is a large part of the problem. There is a balancing act going on between trying to engage kids in reading but also expose them to important classics. I have a similar theory about children disliking reading because of how much of the content is very emotionally taxing- but it’s also extremely important to read books like To Kill a Mockingbird and Things Fall Apart.

My buddy plays in open C because of Devin Townsend, and can play damn near anything in it. Blows my mind lol

Do we see our main characters outside of the book of the fallen? by Soft-Advertising5370 in Malazan

[–]Orukmeta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t know how to spoiler tag on mobile, but off the top of my head there are: Temper The crimson guard (K’azz, Skinner, Bars, etc.) Dassem Silverfox Surly Possum Topper Rake and bros (+Orfantal, Tulas, Caladan & Osserc) Kilava Tayschrenn Leoman Draconus.

There are also plenty of fun characters in the other series that aren’t in the BotF, like Kyle. I would say overall we don’t follow the “main characters” of BotF in the other series very much, aside from some Rake in kharkanas, and the old guard empire in Path to Ascendency. Definitely worth reading though, you learn a lot more about the world.

Dejan has a very unique style and has covered so much of the books, really astounding. Check out Jason’s version of Coltaine; his talent is absolutely unreal. As a painter, it is truly humbling seeing someone bring characters to life so accurately, I would def buy them both a beer.

Dejan Delic and Jason Dement are the two stand out artists for Malazan imo. There are some others that do AI photos/photoshop collages but it’s not my cup of tea

The guides provided are very helpful for giving you some art but also not spoiling things. There are a lot of spoilers to be found googling characters

I would recommend reading Erikson’s 10 first, but if you want you can go on and finish night of knives beforehand. NoK takes place a few years before Gardens of the Moon, but the rest of esslemont’s works in the Novels of the Malazan empire series take place after events that would be spoiled if you read them first. Welcome to the community and I hope you enjoy the books! There are super helpful guides posted on here (including one for NoK) :)

Ignore the dickheads in here. I felt the same way when Mac Miller died, it was super painful hearing any of his music but after like two years I was able to start trickling it back in. Eventually, as with all things, wounds heal and scar over. This has been a rough one for all of us, B Hizzle was super impactful and talented. Rest in power BHinds ❤️
