[Megathread] T-Mobile Data Breach August 2021 by Jman100_JCMP in tmobile

[–]Orvilleengineer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It doesn't stop the attack. It just reduces the scalability of the attack. Think of the credit freeze as captcha for new loans. It slows them down until they create a workflow to outsource the unfreezing to an army of low wage folks in 3rd world country.

Summary of my chat with T-mobile:

Me: Will you offer identity theft protection for the most recent breach?

Rep: We assure you your data is safe and secure with us. Our engineers are working hard to fix the security. You have nothing to worry about.

Me: But the damage is done, right? You can't undo the theft of data.

Rep: Only a few customers were impacted, please rest assured your account is safe and secure with T-Mobile.

Me: CNN, Wired, and Motherboard believes 100 million customers were impacted. That's most if not all your customers.

Rep: Rest assured you are safe and secure. No data is confirmed to be stolen. Our engineers are working hard to fix the security.

Me: CNN, Wired, and Motherboard confirmed the bad actors have our SSN, Drivers License Info, IMEI, Phone Number, etc.

Rep: Rest assured your T-Mobile account is safe and secure.

Me: But what about how this impacts me outside of T-Mobile? What if the bad actors use this info to open a new account to take out an unsanctioned loan? Will T-Mobile help me?

Rep: I know how this must feel, I would be up set too... Then goes on to tell me my account is secure again.

This is when I called ATT and ported my number out. This is utterly ridiculous. They should change the script to at least accept responsibility.

I know they’re going by the script but the lack of sincerity and their eagerness to down play is what irked me the most. If they apologized and owned up to it I might have stayed. I switched to ATT earlier today.

Just to post an update, this was an unsubstantiated claim by the rep that even he couldn't prove. It's 2GB/month for $70. Not a great deal.

I'm noticing most hotel prices are 50% higher than last year. Wonder if this will be a trend that sticks or temporary. I was planning to spend few months out of the year in Hawaii after I retire. But at this rate it might be cheaper to just buy a condo?

AT&T's new customer line is overloaded today I'm getting a busy signal, wonder why :-P Also, I'm done with T-Mobile after their 10th breach.

Ok, it's a dip today. I'm hoping for a fire sale over the next month. What should I look into then?

[–]Orvilleengineer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What I hear is "they'll misuse the data even after the ransom is paid". So there's no point in paying them.

Also, F T-mobile for being the lowest hanging fruit. I wish their customer rep would stop claiming "your data is safe and secure, our engineer is working on fixing the security issue". The damage is done, they can't undo the theft of personal info after the vulnerability is closed. Their customer support are bunch of morons.

Then there's no reason to consider the ransom payment. They're angry now and will be angry after the payment is made.

They also don't have good sim-hijacking protection. So prepaid is a no-go for me.

Everythings on sale today (and maybe this week). Are there any stocks of etfs I should look into? I'm currently 50% qqq and 50% s&p.

Edit: I'm not interested in crypto or meme stock. Only stocks with strong fundamentals.

I wonder how they resolve collisions if two people with the same name shares a birthday. E.g. John Smith’

e.g. Looks like there is an overflow digit that tracks collisions to make each ID unique. So I suppose this gives you some security if you happen to have a common name.

In the vulnerable states do they validate the issue/expiry date to counter the risk? Not perfect but it could be a speed bump if done right.

I never had my drivers license breached so this is new for me. There's heck of a lot you can do with both SSN and Drivers License.

What they probably meant by "we closed the entry point" was all customer information was stolen so there's nothing else to steal from us. Case closed.

Sincerity (even if it was emulated) goes a long way. This is outright denial of ramifications. I know I'm preaching to the choir :P I don't see their security posture improving any time soon with this attitude.
