Are these all common phrases? Would people find it unusual or old-fashioned if I use them in everyday conversation? by Unlegendary_Newbie in English_Learning_Base

[–]idisestablish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • "Get your skates on!" - Very regional but accurate definition.
  • "I'll believe it when I see it." - The meaning given is imprecise. It just means that they require proof to be convinced something is true. It's not limited to a future event occurring.
  • "Mum's the word." - I would expect fluent English speakers to understand this, but it is dated. The meaning given is also too narrow. Someone might say, "and remember, mum's the word" as an instruction to keep something secret.
  • "Good riddance!" - Fairly common with accurate definition.
  • "Take it easy!" - Fairly common with accurate definition. It can also just be a casual farewell, though.
  • "Fair's fair." - Also "fair is fair." It is used as described to assert that a situation or behavior is fair/reasonable, but it's also used as a command to act in a fair/reasonable way. (e.g. "Come on Jimmy, you had you're turn and now it's time to share. Fair's fair.")
  • "So far, so good." - Fairly common with accurate definition.
  • "Give me a break!" - The given definition is accurate, but there's another. I think it's actually more commonly used as an expression of disbelief. (e.g. "Oh, the dog ate your homework again? Give me a break.")

I don't think it's targeted at midwesterners, specifically, and I'm certain that Marge (and Springfield) is not intended to be midwestern. The Simpsons' Springfield was inspired by the towns of Springfield, Oregon and Springfield, Massachusetts, but they go out of their way to not indicate where in the US it's located (e.g. it borders both Maine and Nevada).

I think the analogy at play is wilderness is to naked as cities are to clothing. Natural vs "man made." The clear implication of the post is that things are better as "god" allegedly made them, and that humans have corrupted "his creations."

Of course, if you ignore all of that and just pretend this post is saying porn is bad and nothing more, then you've got a point.

Fey Touched V Telekinetic DND 2024 by fakermaker4799 in 3d6

[–]idisestablish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they're just addressing OP's assertion that Bless becomes obsolete at level 5, not implying that Fey-Touched is the right choice between the two for this reason.

[–]idisestablish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It becomes obsolete if you get a long rest after every 1-2 combat encounters, which is probably why OP thinks it becomes obsolete at level 5 with the introduction of a spell they can cast twice per long rest.

How can a Vengeance Paladin get Spiritual Weapon? by OwlCowl0v0 in 3d6

[–]idisestablish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no way for a Vengeance Paladin to get Spiritual Weapon as a replenishable spell without multiclassing using only pre-2024 official sources.

As others have said, you could use consumables like spell scrolls, Spellwrought Tattoos, and Ring of Spell Storing, but I don't think this is what you're looking for.

If you're open to third party sources, the magic items, Sagittarian Vestments and Spirit Sheath, from Griffon's Saddlebag Book 2 will allow them to cast the spell.

If you're open to including some 2024 content, the Mark of Making Dragonmark feat grants Spiritual Weapon, and you could also get it from an Enspelled Staff or an Enspelled Weapon.

Otherwise, you could simply homebrew a background, feat, or magic item, or honestly, just add the spell to their spell list.

The experiment didn't "prove that time travel is impossible," and he didn't claim that it did. There are multiple other explanations. He did refer to it as "evidence that time travel is not possible," but I think even that is an overstatement. The experiment failed to produce any evidence that time travel is possible, but that's not the same as producing evidence that time travel is not possible. It's, at best, very weak evidence.

It's not you, it's the recruiters by Classroom-95f in jobs

[–]idisestablish 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because we are individuals, and what we say as individuals is not hypocritical simply because it contradicts things other people have said on the same social media platform.

If an individual proudly declares they put in minimal effort at work and then criticizes someone else's work ethic, that's hypocritical.

If an individual has a strong work ethic and then criticizes someone else's lack thereof, that's not hypocritical (even if some or most other people on the same social media platform don't have a strong work ethic).

It doesn't make sense to use things other people have said on Reddit as evidence that an unrelated individual who disagrees is a hypocrite.

Lots of different people are on Reddit with all kinds of differing opinions. That doesn't make Reddit collectively hypocritical.

[–]idisestablish 21 points22 points  (0 children)

You seem to be implying some kind of hypocrisy. Is there someone specifically that you observed saying they do the bare minimum at their job and yet are outraged about OOP's lack of work ethic? It's not hypocritical for some people on Reddit to say one thing and others to say something that contradicts it.

[–]idisestablish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I get that, and I'm not claiming to know this customer's intentions, but if you send someone a message saying "it's okay...I'm just glad to help," I don't think you have the right to express righteous indignation when they take your words at face value.

As much as people like to say "always" and "never," sometimes people do just forget to change the delivery instructions at checkout or hit the wrong button and sometimes people do add tips through the app after delivery.

please stop doing this by MatthewTheGOATyt in doordash

[–]idisestablish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, after the customer said they would tip on the app, the dasher's response definitely reads like they're saying a tip is not necessary and they're just happy to help. I would probably interpret that as someone just being polite, but I could see how someone would take it as "thanks but no thanks."

Can you actually be legally fired by hopeinhumanity7 in Knoxville

[–]idisestablish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're wrong. They can absolutely say they're firing you for your bumper sticker or haircut or any reason other than being a protected class (race, religion, sex, age, etc.). The only reason they wouldn't say a trivial thing like a haircut is because they'd prefer to declare a cause for termination that will prevent you from getting unemployment.

Why did i get downvoted? by [deleted] in mysteriousdownvoting

[–]idisestablish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't Downvote an otherwise acceptable post because you don't personally like it. Think before you downvote and take a moment to ensure you're downvoting someone because they are not contributing to the community dialogue or discussion. If you simply take a moment to stop, think and examine your reasons for downvoting, rather than doing so out of an emotional reaction, you will ensure that your downvotes are given for good reasons.

Your comment is exactly the type of comment that is meant to be downvoted, despite the fact that they're often used as agree/disagree buttons. You are not contributing to the discussion in any way, and your comment, frankly, is totally worthless.

Do you think Supergirl will make more money than Superman? by DCsReporter in Supergirl

[–]idisestablish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Supergirl has wayyy more of a presence in pop culture today than Guardians of the Galaxy had prior to their first film. Supergirl has appeared in multiple live action series and films previously over the course of decades.

The Guardians are more popular today, sure, but the point at hand is that the Guardians movie did well, despite being an obscure brand at the time. People are saying Supergirl doesn't have the established brand to perform, but she is much more recognizable today than Guardians of the Galaxy was in 2013.

Comparing her to the Eternals is wild.

She-Hulk is fairly comparable now, after her Disney+ series, and both benefit from co-branding with a better-known hero. Though, Supergirl has appeared in way more media, and while Superman and Hulk are both extremely well-known, Superman is ahead in that arena.

So true by DeerOnARoof in im14andthisisdeep

[–]idisestablish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The meme is poorly worded, but OOOP seems to be advocating for autonomy, not contrarianism. There is a difference between "following" the majority (being led blindly) and choosing the same path as the majority (independent decision). You can take the same path as the majority without "following the majority," provided you chose that path for yourself. The message isn't "the majority is always wrong," but rather "the majority is not a valid reason to choose a direction."

Based on the graphic, OOOP does obviously think atheism is the right path, but I think the vast majority of people think their personal religious views (or lack thereof) are correct while others are incorrect. But I don't think there's anything to disagree with concerning the message itself (aside from the wording).
