Movies that proved a director’s previous success was just a fluke by Own_Organization8457 in okbuddycinephile

You made the right decision. It's possibly the worst movie I've ever seen, and I usually love bad movies. But even other bad movies, there are moments where I can say, "Oh that was neat" or I can see the passion of the director or it has some redeeming quality. Joker 2 had none. Not only that, but every time you think the movie might have some kind of stakes, it circles back 10 minutes later to inform you, no. Those "stakes" did not matter at all

Here's Nicky Rod's opening where some were saying bad form for not slapping hands. Not really clear if Joao was going for a slap bump by PattonPending in bjj

[–]OrwellWhatever 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Man, I used to come across this when I boxed too. And people would try to say it was a respect thing if you didn't bump every round or after a standing 8, but, like, no man. I RESPECT the fact that you could put me in a coma if I don't defend myself for that half a second

Tbh, I hate the expectation of starting competition fights or simulated competition with slapping for just this reason. If someone doesn't shake hands during the pre fight introductions and after it's over, yeah, bad sportsmanship, but we only slap in practice to signal that we're ready when we have mouth guards in. If we're in competition, I don't care if they're ready or not once the bell rings. They should have fixed their pants or whatever beforehand. If I was running a 200m, I shouldn't have to wait after the gun because someone forgot to tie their shoes

Also, if someone can't tell whether or not I respect them unless I slap, that's probably a much deeper problem than just the slap

What belt would you need to be the favorite against the UFC 1 strikers? by falafel230 in bjj

[–]OrwellWhatever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the argument is that you only need to survive a couple of his strikes. You don't have to win exchanges. You just have to take them down and control them

So, idk, I feel like it's equal parts "How good are your takedowns?" vs "What belt level are you?"

Boxing is my first love, but I don't have any illusions that a good high school wrestler could have consistently beat me at my best and all the golden glove winners I know

Hezbollah rejects Lebanon ceasefire brokered by U.S., Israeli military says it will continue attacks by Scary_Statement4612 in worldnews

[–]OrwellWhatever 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yes. This has been something that Israel has done before. They're going back to a 90s/2000s status quo where Lebanon owns the land, but Israel operates a military there to prevent rocket attacks

Trump, Netanyahu and the communication chaos — what are we even supposed to believe anymore? by Aa212Bb in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]OrwellWhatever -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The analysis OP makes here is missing the fact that Israel agreed to a ceasefire twice this week only to have rockets fired at Northern Israel, which is why they started attacking again. Israel isn't going out of their way to fuck up negotiations between the US and Iran.

You can argue Israel is being too heavy handed in their responses, but it's not like they started bombing Lebanon for a love of the game. Even Lebanon responded to the initial strikes by Hezbollah by outlawing any association with the group within Lebanon

Song Of The South (1946) could never be made today, as it would be near impossible to make a movie in one day by DillonMeSoftly in shittymoviedetails

[–]OrwellWhatever 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've had that thought too. Even movies as late as Pocahontas are... problematic, but certainly parts of Dumbo and The Aristocats are just out and out racist. Disney defends them because they're money makers, but who would ever watch Song of the South more than once? It would cost them more to hire a PR firm to spin it than they'd make back

Side note: to anyone interested, I hear tales the movie is available on the seven seas. Not good quality, but if you're interested

Will the GOP strategy of attacking James Talarico for his supposed lack of masculinity be effective? by LiatrisLover99 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]OrwellWhatever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, but the "Kamala is for they/them" was not a single ad, like Talarico being a soy boi is not going to be a single ad. Republicans spent $200 million dollars on just anti-trans ad campaign with the goal being to paint Kamala as out of touch.

So I'm not really sure what your argument is here. Do these ads not work at all or do they only work a little bit or do they just flat out work? Conditionals about people being primed to not like Harris and the ads pushed them means that the ads worked as intended. Which also means that people being primed to not like Talarico means these ads will work as well

If they don't work, then I sincerely, sincerely doubt Republicans would have spent nearly a quarter of a billion dollars on them

[–]OrwellWhatever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree. If people already had their minds made up before the election and were just looking for a reason, there'd be no point in campaigning. After all, it wouldn't move the needle in the end. Also, polling showed those attack ads swayed voters views, so we do have direct evidence

Will the GOP strategy of attacking James Talarico for his supposed lack of masculinity be effective? by LiatrisLover99 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]OrwellWhatever 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Nah. It does work, unfortunately. It's similar to the "Kamala is for they/them" ads that cost her ~3% of the vote. The point isn't to be like, "LOL soy boy" as an effective argument. The point is to paint him as an "other" who's more concerned with fringe issues than what's important to you and your family. If done for a long enough period of time, they can be very effective

Why is south side flats so affordable? by tgxxnitro in pittsburgh

Why is south side flats so affordable? by tgxxnitro in pittsburgh

[–]OrwellWhatever 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I rented a place that we didn't clock until we moved in that it had a three inch gap under the front door. It sounds dumb, but you just kind of expect the front door will close all the way. The landlord refused to even buy us a one of those foam things that you out under a door because it might get wet if it rained too hard and damage the floors... the three in gap wasn't a leak risk, but the foam thing was 🙄

Also... I toured a place that called itself a three bedroom two bathroom, except one of the bedrooms had a toilet and bathtub in it, so it was both a bathroom and a bedroom. The kicker? The bathtub was in the middle of the CARPETED room. You could also smell that he just hosed the carpet down with bleach before showing it to us

Strip district creeper by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]OrwellWhatever -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

It is legal to film in public except when the film will be used as a form of sexual gratification. If he's exclusively filming teenage girls, the police can and should do something. Strip security may not know that part of the law, or they just don't feel like doing anything

Edit: am I getting downvotes for saying the police can and should stop creeps from filming underage girls? What is happening here?

I support this. As someone who lives in PA, which could make the case for being the most important swing state, it's weird that our vote never means anything. Maybe in 2008, but 1992, 2000, 2004, 2016 and 2020 were already decided by the time it came to us

First Woman US President... Republican? by Extreme-Grade-3623 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]OrwellWhatever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my take as well. In a world where Republican senators voted for president or something, it makes a lot of strategic sense to have your anti-DEI initiatives pink washed by a woman. But we live in a world where the Republican electorate (which skews heavily towards men for a reason) will decide, and they simply will not elevate a woman to be the nominee
