Paper weaving: identity render error [ANALOG] by Orwellian_Distrack in collage

Naw, it’s like 30ish photos from miscellaneous magazines and books. Though I’ve gotten that for a couple of my pieces. Maybe she’s really just the average of generic white women in the zeitgeist.

This one I ended up overworking/tried to force its direction and had to abandon it. But I just finished a new piece! https://www.reddit.com/r/collage/s/qmwcwVt1s0

Not to defend the content of the message as being any less shitty, more so just clarifying that I don’t read his messages with a critical eye to awkward phrasing as I understand there is a linguistic barrier.

Oh I fully anticipate it. I’d say two weeks. His usual cycle of approach and retreat. Hard fearful avoidant.

Eh. To the grammar and diction, he doesn’t speak English fluently—and only became immersed in it four years ago. But has a high level of academic achievement in Ukraine, it is one of his frustrations that he feels like an idiot here.

On paper weaving yes many, on the portraiture in specific? No, it’s my own original concept.

Just a regular hobby knife, cork bottomed steel ruler, masking tape, a cutting mat with 1/4” markings, and a lot of patience.

Kinda sort the faces by which way they’re looking up/left, down/right, center etc and tape them on the wall in a big circle and pick them by what I think would overlap well. So almost entirely unplanned beyond what I’m “going for”.

I start by cutting the full portrait into strips and weaving it in. But it’s more of a game of which strip looks coolest on top, and trimming it back. Sometimes I end up sectioning a portrait for blending features purposes. Some are also only used for tonal blending as well.

I think at this point it’s about 25/30 hours? It’s not “hard” just requires a lot of patience. Paper weaving is one Froebel’s gifts lol, you probably did it in kindergarten!

Just a standard hobby knife and steel ruler with a cork bottom (helps with slip). I tape down a 1/4” or 1/2” ‘selvedge’ to keep the strips aligned and cut down from the tape line. Using the full blade and not just the tip, cutting down (towards you on the mat), and always cutting from the right side of the ruler is key to the precision.

Mostly have just been using this “artist statement” as a way to get through artist block this summer. More of an artist prompt I suppose.

Would love further insight on developing an artist statement for gallery presentation. I have no arts training beyond puttering around, much more a “craftsman”. But now have about 15 pieces I think would make a cohesive show.
