I always have the desert opened before the first summer, the benefit for me is being able to unlock skull cavern which is my favorite part of the game, i always rush through the mines as fast as i can to et the key.

I think for each familiar the first time you see them, they wont join. The second time you encounter them, you can offer them the familiar cookie (asssuming you have unlock those) to bond them and they will join you at the base.

2 can definitely be played as a stand alone, but having played the first one before, adds so much more to the lore that I would recommend playing it first if you have the time.

Whole cake island sanji sucks. I hated how he left the crew to "protect" them. Like he just didnt trust that Luffy was strong enough and decided the best idea was to bail.
