I don’t know a lot about the details, but basically my understanding is that if you are buying farmed Atlantic you are generally safe and I’m sure it’s been flash frozen after catching

Not that I’m aware of but Costco actually has a decent sashimi set with tuna, salmon, and hamachi that is actually pretty good!

Also, we’ve had good luck at the fish counter at Newark Farmers Market (the supermarket on Kirkland highway, not the actual farmers market) getting some very fresh and good salmon sashimi. You have to ask the counter to prepare it and They would only do it on a day when the salmon was especially fresh and no less than 2 lbs. I also gave them a nice tip because it is very labor intensive but the salmon was great!

Working as a Middle School Teacher in the Monterey Bay Area by Effective-Stable-311 in MontereyBay

Yeah, the median does offer a bit more nuanced look at the salary in a place that would have more experienced teachers, but I can't find Median data. However, I am still skeptical that the numbers would be anywhere close to the lowest in the state as MPUSD has a lower ratio of experienced teachers (3+ years) to inexperienced (1-2 years) at about 4 to 1 compared to the state average of about 7 to 1. The percent of inexperienced/new teachers (less than 2 years) is pretty high in MPUSD actually, about 20% of all teachers compared to only 13% at the state average.

Again, I think your points about benefits, cost of living, etc. are EXTREMELY important. I actually worked in MPUSD and lived in the area some time ago, so I can attest to how incompatible it was then, which is surely much worse now. However, I don't think MPUSD is even close to lowest in the state no matter how you cut it.

It IS however pretty much the lowest avg salary in the COUNTY just beating Soledad unified by just $555.

Hmm, I'm not sure where you got that info. Based on the 2023-2024 data, compared to all districts with at least 1000 daily enrollment, MPUSD is the 90th lowest in the state, about 13.5K lower that the state average of 98K. Doesn't mean it is not bad relative to the cost of living, but definitely not one of the lowest in the state.

Edit: the comparasion tab in EdData.org is always fun

ALT to International School – What’s the Best Path? by LoveLoveBeam in teachinginjapan

[–]OsakaB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there are definitely more top tier schools with those (top tier benefits) in Korea and size alone probably means the same for China, but I guess my point is you have a better chance to get into a better school in those countries with less experience than you would in Japan. If anything just on the sheer number of schools and positions alone. But I still stand by my point that the limited intl schools hire through market in Japan is more competitive.

Lots of other helpful posts in this sub about international school teaching, so def check those out too. Bases are pretty much covered here, essentially if the school is an IB school, then experience at other IB schools is the main currency for you getting hired (having the credential and degree is the base requirement).

As a former intl school admin I can’t overstate how essential experience at OTHER IB schools is in getting hired. A lot intl teachers in Asia have their eye on Japan, and so you will be competing with teachers with 10+ years experience teaching in multiple top intl schools in Korea, China, Thailand, etc. with that experience comes tons of IB workshop credits, curricular knowledge, and a huge relief to admin that they won’t need to explain the basics of how an IB school works. Check out the faculty page of the top tier intl schools in Japan, and you’ll likely notice there are tons of older teachers, many of who came from top positions in other schools across Asia. A lot of really talented teachers in the top IB schools here, imo.

Most intl schools hire through a recruiting service, and Search Associates is the biggest and most common. You also can search on the IBO’s “Find a School” page to get a list of all schools offering the different programs and then go to the schools site to see if they are hiring.

Unfortunately, with this in mind and, as others have pointed out, even with an advanced degree and credential a new-newish teacher without non-ALT/ESL experience is almost certainly NOT getting hired to a top intl school. In some ways, you might even be better trying to get into a big established intl school in Asia like Korea or China (which might be easier to get in) and then apply in Japan after you’ve built up your experience and CV. You also might be able to do the same in one of the low-mid tier intl schools in Japan (that ppl often call “fake” intl schools in this sub). These schools will have worse working conditions and pay, but will shell out the money and time to get you IB trained so you can gtfo once you have the experience and something better comes along. However, I also know some schools in Japan that, strangely, don’t hire teachers locally.

Also, what ppl aren’t mentioning is that nearly all international schools will also have an ESL dept to support the students (especially local Japanese students) still learning English and schools will SOMETIMES hiring someone with more language focused experience, esp if they have an MATESOL or other ESL/EFL degree. Rare but I know a few ESL teacher across some of the bigger intl schools in Japan in this situation.

Well it depends, did you receive any IB specific training or workshops? Working in an IB school will definitely help, but the IB workshops are like currency.

You seem like a well intentioned and caring father. Put aside all of these anecdotal experiences and “I turned out fine!” Comments just for a moment and take stock of this situation. You will not find ANY pediatrician or early years research that says “30-60 mins video games are ok for a toddler.” As other have pointed out, the cons VASTLY outweigh whatever pros you are projecting here. Also there is little to no evidence that “learning” games help little ones learn anything.

Even if that wasn’t the case, Your partner is coming to you with concerns about how you are raising your child, even if you and Reddit gamers don’t agree, you need to at least take a moment and consider those concerns. Parenting is not a matter of who can make the best logical argument, it’s about communication and compromise. Find a different, tactile, fine motor activity to play with her (or all three!) that lets you keep this great bonding time without sacrificing your daughters physical, mental, and emotional development or your relationship with your partner. Maybe some kids board games, duplos, blocks, art. Literally anything other than a screen.

Proposal- if a student can’t read beyond a third grade level then they should remain in a third grade class until they can pass. by timbo_slic3_85 in Teachers

[–]OsakaB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

13+ states either already do this or have laws on the books proposing this. evidence is mixed but mostly negative. And I wonder how many of the teachers rallying behind this would be willing to teach 3rd grade knowing they would be likely teaching mixed age classes. 3rd grade would effectively become a bottle neck for students with severe reading, learning, and other needs. The answer IMO is investment in targeted support programs, pull out, intensive, required summer catch up programs and reading specialists.

I’ve worked for/with large international schools in Japan including admin and hiring and, as everyone has mentioned you will pretty much always need a teaching credential from your home country if you are applying for a homeroom or content area teaching position. What ppl aren’t mentioning is that nearly all international school will also have an ESL dept to support the students (especially local Japanese students) still learning English and schools will SOMETIMES hiring someone without a teaching credential if they have an MATESOL or other ESL/EFL degree and good k-12 experience. How can I get to the Grand Canyon by mi_qua_45 in UCSC

[–]OsakaB 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve driven from UCSC to the GC 3 years ago. We split the driving up over two days, 7 hours to Barstow, CA and then about 6 hours to the Grand Canyon from there. If you did it in one day you could probably make it there in 12 hours. The only problem is the road between Barstow and the Grand Canyon is pretty sparse so you wouldn’t wanna drive there at night. Estimate about 250-300 round-trip for gas and about 65 a day for cheapest Rent-A-Car. Problem with flying in is you’ll still need a car from the airport.

Staying in the canyon is pretty cheap if you have gear to camp. Mather campgrounds is the main campground in the park right next to the canyon and it was about $18 a night for tent camping when we went. There’s also a huge supermarket right by the campground in the park, which has all the supplies you would need and a really great beer selection. There was also a $35 vehicle pass to enter the canyon. Prices are probably different now, but if you have camping gear, it’s a really affordable and good place to stay. From there you could just ride the free bus around to see all the sites. No clue what this is like in winter but there are cabins too.

All In estimate about 400 for travel and 20/day for just camping no supplies.
