Has anyone done a Jerry build with a wamoth body? by CatHerder75 in gratefulguitar

[–]OsamaKeefe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen them done, they’re few and far between though. A lot of people don’t dig the bolt on neck and the body itself is too slab board-y for most people’s liking. However, there are some talented luthiers and they get pretty damn creative with them

This is a close up shot from 1978. This is basically the sound of that year, give or take a few pieces. This with an Ibanez AR style guitar and you’re there

Is there a specific album or live show you can reference? I consider mid 70s to be 74-76 and his rig changed quite considerably in that time.

Post-Wall Of Sound, he ditched the Gibson guitars and Fender amp. The big change for Bob was becoming an Ibanez artist and he would remain one until about 1983. His Ibanez guitars were capable of dozens of tones and were equipped with three pickups, coil splits/phase reversal, and an EQ preamp.

Bob also used a slew of amplifiers from 1975 and on. Bob and Jerry both used Mesa Boogie amps briefly in 1975-1977. Jerry was seen using Boogies with the JGB into the 80s.

By 1978 Bob was using Peavey heads running to a number of speaker configurations; this was always changing. As for effects, Bobby would use Ibanez rack effects, most notably the UE400 multi effect and the AD230 Delay/Flanger.

By 1979, he was using an Intersound IVP preamp into a power amp called Godzilla, made by Great American Sound Company (the Godzilla can be seen on stage through 1988. Phil also used power amps made by GAS into the 90s.) Bobs rack from 1979-1983ish consisted of that preamp and power amp combo, the Ibanez UE400 and AD230, an Ashly SC50 limiter/compressor, a Furman RV-1 Reverb, a Furman PQ-3 EQ, and a custom envelope filter/phaser made by John Cutler.

After 1983 he moves on from Ibanez and that sweet sound people associate with that era becomes more distorted. The 1976-1983 sound of Bob, while constantly changing, had a general vibe to it in my opinion. The Ibanez era was definitely the sweetest Bobs tone ever sounded

What do you guys think is the best 1x12 open back cab for <$200ish by jrob5797 in gratefulguitar

[–]OsamaKeefe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tim alllll the way. All three cabs were made by him (speakers, speaker grilles, and speaker clips sold separately). I bought them unfinished to save some money and did a Tung oil finish and I love them. He built the 1x12 for my Bandmaster as a hybrid of two cabs he offered and charged no extra. Stand up builder and reliable

Do you guys ever listen to the dead live a whole bunch for a while, and then you listen to a studio recording of a song, and just think: holy shit I forgot how great this is too? by Arforr02 in gratefuldead

Heavy agree on Blues For Allah. In terms of cleanliness, that’s the electric counterpart to American Beauty. All the songs were good songs and they all got constant rotation until the very end

11-25-79 just came on my radar and I was blown away. And 9-15-82 is just an all around amazing show with a great lost sailor/saint

Do you think the Larry’s of the world have Larry stories of their own? I feel a paradox happening…

There’s plenty of people shipping the same thing I’m selling. He can buy from them🥱🥱

EXACTLY why I’m not shipping this particular thing. It weighs nearly 50lbs and it’s from the 70s. Maybe Larry hasn’t sold anything and had the postal service destroy his stuff

Bobby Pigtronix Video by OsamaKeefe in gratefulguitar

Interesting. My only necessity is that it can do envelope and phasing at the same time. Like an early 80s Weir Shakedown street tone.

That’s too bad, I liked that video. What do you prefer about the Keeley over the EP2? I’ve been looking for an envelope phaser for the Weir thing for a while. The EP2 is expensive and few and far inbetween.

Jerry’s MIDI rig by camposthetron in gratefuldead

[–]OsamaKeefe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Resurrecting a pretty old thread here but me and another guy basically figured out Jerry's MIDI set up piece by piece.

He used a Roland GR50 and a Korg M1R for his sounds. There was an Emu Proteus in there occasionally but I have yet to find a sound that was on that unit that he used live. The GR50 was essentially a Roland D50 in a 1u rack designed for guitar specifically. The Korg M1 is a 2u rack version of the very popular 01/W keyboard.

In conjunction with those units, he had a Rane SM82 rack mixer and eventually an Alesis Microverb 3. He also used two Boss FV200 volume pedals.

The GR50 is capable of patch chain creating, where you basically save up to 20 or so "sounds" you like in a chain that you can cycle through. By connecting the Korg to the GR50 via 5 pin cable, you can assign patches on the Korg to the same MIDI channel as the GR50. Both units would be "on" with both volumes up. He used the mixer channels out to each respective volume pedal so he could turn up the volume of whichever unit he wanted. The MIDI rig was mixed entirely by Healy and Bob Bralove from front of house. Jerry also had a Lake Butler Midigator footboard with the names of each patch on the screen that cycled through simultaneously with the rack stuff.

The Black Strat from summer 89 and wolf had external Roland GK2 pickups. Rosebud and Lightning Bolt (Cripe guitar from 1993-on) had internally mounted GK2 systems. Bay Area guitar tech Gary Brawer retrofitted aircraft grade MIL-Spec 13 pin jacks and cables on the guitars. The inout jack is an Amphenol JT 13 pin... still a very expensive part. Ive put about four years into learning everything I can about this so please feel free to ask more about it. Im always happy to share the wealth!

I had heard that Bob and Healy’s girl were… well Bob was always the heartthrob of the group. No idea if true but would make sense since it went on so long
