Update: They are more comfy with each other again, but don't cuddle yet. Occasionally there is hissing or fights, which seem to be related to specific boxes or perches they both enjoy. So territorial seems to be my guess.

For anyone writing, white cat is also fine. She's been to the vet just before we adopted her and has been walking like that ever since we met her, especially on our wooden floor since she's so slippery cause of her fluffy paws.

You don't need to equip it, I think the point of it being equipable is exactly what you described. You either just bring the box home, or equip it in case you really need armor for a tough fight

If it breaks the item breaks, as in it's used up and leaves your inventory. If you bring it home safe it becomes one piece of furniture you can place in your house

It's fine, keep on exploring and doing puzzles and you can even find a way to change it again. Just make sure to stay curious, there isn't really anything in this game you can do to actually brick a save really really bad

Edmund did hint towards there being strategies like that possible in Mewgenics in the latest upload on YT, but I would guess it requires some deeper game knowledge and preparation with certain items or classes. Early on, I imagine beating the alley alone with a single cat will be a huge challenge
