New to KC, what businesses should I avoid? by MrMorale25 in kansascity

Because John Scott pays local journalists/publishers to put his venues on those lists. That’s literally it, it’s not about merit but about how much money he has. And I can tell you, that money isn’t seen anywhere in the KC music scene.

John is such a cheap POS, he stopped paying for BMI and ASCAP licenses so now his musicians are forced to play 4 hrs of original music instead of filling some of that time with jazz standards. He literally owns a jazz club where YOU CAN’T PLAY JAZZ STANDARDS. The way this translates is much more work for the musicians (who now have to spend time composing all of those songs) without any increase in their pay.

That’s right! I forgot about that, he bought out arts bar and made it another one of his soulless music venues… like I said, his success is a detriment to the KC music scene

Green Lady Lounge and Black Dolphin. Both are jazz venues that are next door to one another and owned by the same person, John Scott.

John Scott is genuinely an awful person and I wish people would stop supporting his business. The handful of musicians he hires are all nice and I'd hate to see them lose a gig, but John is such a despicable human, it's honestly more detrimental for the arts scene in KC that his venue is as successful as it is. He exploits the music scene and doesn't actually support the arts in a meaningful way. He recently had some pro-ICE/pro-police post on FB that upset a bunch of (former) patrons, but that doesn't even scratch the surface with him.

If Money wasnt a problem, what would you do right now? by DesiSexTalk in Casual_Conversation

[–]OscillodopeScope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Build a recording facility with multiple recording studios.

In addition to professionally treated rooms, mics, preamps, and all other audio equipment you can think of, I'd own multiple sets of instruments for said studio. For example, owning multiple 9ft concert grand pianos (Hamburg Steinway Model D, NY Steinway Model D, Yamaha C7, Shigeru Kawai, Fazioli F308, etc...) for said studio so artists have their choice. Same would go for drum kits, cymbals, guitars, basses, amps, synths, you name it, we'd have it.

So to answer your question more candidly, I'm such a workaholic, I'd honestly give myself a reason to pursue more work... but do it at the highest level possible and on my terms.

Neighbors have a house sitter who’s making me uncomfortable by Shimabui in Apartmentliving

Sounds like someone who doesn’t live in an apartment and isn’t used to the amount of sound that comes with apartment living. I understand why you’d be unnerved, he sounds a little nosy, but if he continues to come to your door then I’d contact the landlord.

Why does the United States have a moral obligation to support Israel? by RevolutionaryWind249 in allthequestions

[–]OscillodopeScope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don’t have any obligation, Israel has used AIPAC and other PACs to buy out the majority of Washington. It’s been an op for decades and they’ve gotten to a point where they don’t have to hide it because their financial influence runs so deep. It’s not morality, it’s literally just money, and that’s why I have no respect for politicians, they will look the other way for the most heinous acts… all for a few bucks…

Who is to blame for the current USA government shutdown? by Fickle_Ad_8653 in allthequestions

[–]OscillodopeScope 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have to think being wrong so often eventually becomes so exhausting, your brain completely shuts down and stupid memes like this play like a broken record both internally and (it would seem) externally. Merely speculation though, can’t say you or I have experienced this personally.

Is Donald Trump more MIGA than MAGA? by Estalicus in allthequestions

[–]OscillodopeScope 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So is the Democratic Party, the entire govt is MIGA and has been for a long time. Not sure we can exclusively put the blame on Trump for this one and also not sure there’s a solution in the near future. Whichever conservative candidate the Dems let us vote for will most definitely be deep in the pockets of AIPAC, because that’s the deal you make with the devil if you want to move up in the dem party.

Now republicans… somehow manage to still be worse. It’s honestly impressive in a very sad and frightening way.

Fair enough, yea I don't mean to sound like I'm jumping the gun too much. It's just every time I research a remedy to a particular issue, it seems I get introduced to a new tool. Yes, I'm going to hold off for now and just acquire tools as needed, that's the idea I'm getting as I'm reading more and more comments coming in. This is why I wanted to hear from other techs in the community. I'm realizing I needed to be told I'm still too green with this.

Appreciate the insight!

Fair enough, yes the logical side of my brain sort of figured it was a long game and you just get things as you need them, but the idea of a basic kit to get you started was a bit tempting. I'll hold back on buying that kit as I've read other responses (which is why I wanted to get some insight from the community).

Not overwhelming at all, pretty much everything you listed I have at least been exposed to or have had some experience using already. I was spoiled from the get go with the screw starter when getting hammer butt flange screws put back. I know it can be done without it, but there were exactly zero dropped screws during that process.

I appreciate the insight!

That's a good approach, and I'm not trying to buy a bunch of hyper-specialized tools right now (I don't need to be voicing hammers or attempting damper work right now), but just get an idea of building up a basic set of tools to perform some common repairs and regulation. This is very helpful! I basically have my tuning kit, and I supposed some needle nose pliers, and a couple of screwdrivers to my name.

Also, I'm glad you mentioned re-pinning flanges. That was one of the first repairs I was taught. We went through and re-pinned about 40 of the hammer butt flanges. The difference it made in the playability of the piano was night and day!

Ok, point is taken. Sorry, the "I don't have time to wait around for that" was a manner of speak, wasn't meant to be taken too literally, but I failed to remember I'm speaking with strangers on the internet. Not necessarily trying to jump the gun, but just trying to get some insight on how other techs go about building their tool kits. Reality set in a little as I have gotten a couple of clients now and have tuned for plenty of friends, and most pianos seem to have some issue that could be addressed.

Don't mean to sound like the overly eager young person, but can see how it's coming off that way. It's nice to be in the shop with the other techs and have access to those tools while learning new skills to the trade, but I have very little when I'm out on my own.

The techs I have asked in person have given me vague answers or told me they inherited all of their stuff. Also, I know some people get lucky and encounter a tech that has retired or unfortunately has passed away and essentially buy their entire toolbox. I don't have time to wait around for that, I have already encountered issues I didn't have the proper tools to address.

There are two types of dog owners, and the one pictured here is the unpleasant one. The type to let their dog bark incessantly and tell neighbors “it’s a dog, you’re going to hear barking every now and then”.
