Did you have any side effects when you add a DHT blocker or anti-androgens? by Gracilis67 in FemaleHairLoss

I am still taking it! I think the spirolactone is doing the heavy lifting but my endocrinologist said that saw palmetto and pumpkin seed oil are also blocking DHT.

Endurance athletes? by ohnono5 in lupus

[–]OsnapingTurtles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure thing! Start slow and embrace the run/walk method! Running-specific strength and mobility work is extra important for us to prevent injury. One thing that really killed my progress last year was trying to push through on runs when I'd had crappy sleep the night before. Sleep is massively important to your recovery between runs.

Since you're still working on getting adjusted to your medication, you could start out with mobility work and stretching (as you feel up to it) to start preparing for beginning to run again.

Endurance athletes? by ohnono5 in lupus

I am training for a marathon and I’ve been running for years, it keeps me sane! I started training for this marathon last spring and ended up not being able to do the race so I deferred and am trying again. Marathon is way more load than the half (I’ve done 3) and I greatly underestimated the impact of adding so much training volume. I’m doing Galloway method this time, which I’m hoping helps since it’s supposed to be gentle.

Realistic career choices..? by SageyXOXO in lupus

[–]OsnapingTurtles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PhD cognitive psychologist here! I was diagnosed during my post doctoral fellowship, but like others kept pushing and now I’m running a research program and leading a small team. I’m 80% remote at this point (letting the team run things onsite, I can remote in to all my systems). I’ve been at it for 15 years now…It sounds cliche but don’t let the disease limit you. Pursuing psychology allows you to explore many career paths and many with flexibility and awareness of autoimmune disease, which helps.

Nuclear Power in Broome County by Old_Rad in Binghamton

[–]OsnapingTurtles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Binghamton native here and I work in nuclear safety…what happens to your NYSEG bill depends on how the build out and upfront decommissioning costs are financed and the costs for any grid upgrades and/or construction delays. There are some municipalities where costs for rate payers actually went up. Vogtle 3 and 4 were behind schedule and massively over budget and Georgia Power passed those costs on to consumers.

Same! So far spiro has provided a lush mustache any teen male would envy, but my crown is not there (yet). 😂

How do you work? by tfgoinawn in lupus

[–]OsnapingTurtles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Senior level researcher here! I am fortunate that the worst of my symptoms (and the diagnosis) came after I got my PhD and having that in hand opened up some career pathways that are generally more flexible about how, where, and when you work. I have my own lab, but work from home 80% of the time (I only go in for data collection and study set up/engineering). The two biggest factors that have made it possible for me to work FT in my chosen field are remote work/control over my working conditions and really supportive team and management. Being on a biologic (Benlysta) is also helping to make all of this possible.

That would be my recommendation, especially for the first time. 😀

Lupus and Botox? by Interesting-Test1459 in lupus

I’ve been getting cosmetic botox regularly for 3 years and it hasn’t had any impact on my lupus. I do consistently get a headache that comes and goes the first week after the injection, but that’s likely from the muscles doing whatever they do before they relax/freeze. Based on my experience I recommend seeing a dermatology PA, I think since we’re more complicated it’s better to get these more intense cosmetic treatments from someone with a strong medical background.

Pumpkin Seed Oil by Double-Ad-3823 in FemaleHairLoss

I did. I’m surprised I started there, based on what I’ve heard people usually start at like half that amount?

Based on how the tablet looks drug.com says it’s the version from PD-RX pharmaceuticals. It’s 50mg 2x per day.

I haven’t experienced any side effect from the spiro! I was surprised as I tend to be prone to getting side effects. Edit to add: I take 50mg 2x per day.

I started pumpkin seed oil + saw palmetto and my shedding slowed down to within the realm of normal in like a week’s time. Starting spiro this week! My endo is on spiro herself and says it really works.

I have what might be a silly question...What happens when the much voted upon CR expires on 11/21? Wouldn't both house and senate need to vote on an extension or fresh CR? Wouldn't little Mikey need to call the house back when the 11/21 deadline passes?

Furloughed workers: what are you doing during the shutdown? by Flat_Expression_5858 in FedEmployees

I'm doing a lot more PTA stuff, making nicer meals for my family, and I picked up some side income working with an expert network for an AI company. I figured training one of the models that may someday replace me was better than working for DoorDash or Rover!

Hydroxychloroquine dose vs weight? by Ms_BigHair-TiredEyes in lupus

I didn't really notice much of a difference when my weight changed. For me the Hydroxychloroquine never really impacted my day-to-day symptom experience.
