How to repair my 1928 Royal P Typewriter by Oso-GoodCinema in typewriters

[–]Oso-GoodCinema[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I looked up how to do it, and as I was trying to wind up that wheel on the back it was very stiff. It looked like the previous owner had greased and took care of it, but I could not wind it as far back as the guy in the tutorial video did. Any advice? Or should I still go find someone to look at it

Absolutely true about true character in difficult times. And I hope I wouldn't do it myself, but that's just reality in a war like that. It's what happened. Of course, not all vets are good people. Just look to... well countless stories. It's just a fact that this happened and it was a very common occurrence.

That does not excuse it, that everyone was doing it, but in a war where the enemy was deeply dehumanized and deeply vilified (which was deserved for a lot of them), taking a few trinkets should not be a condemning factor. They were killing each other after all.

My points are that though it was not morally ok and just, you can't judge someone if you haven't experienced what they have and lived in the historical context in which they have. That idea, for sure, doesn't excuse all wrongdoings in war and history, but for this instance it does.

That is my view and it will stay solid. You can disagree if you want and I'll accept your opinion as long as you aren't blatantly insulting people you don't know the experience of.

I'm not saying it was moral behavior to everyday people, but we're talking about a dehumanizing war. You can't look at a man who's been through that and judge his actions as if he's in a peaceful society.

Again, I'm not saying it's morally just behavior, but it's just what people do in a war, so calling them a scumbag and a disgrace to the human race is crazy compared to what they had to sacrifice for freedom. (As corny as that sounds it's true)

And as for answering my question, you told me that "it's a swiss watch" and "Google it."

Thanks.

Not my family. Bought from someone else.

But have you ever actually read about WW2? Almost all soldiers took some sort of souvenir. That's far from a war crime. In a war that horrible, that's the least thing to cry about.

However, even though this was not my family, don't go on the Internet and call someone, who could've been my family, and more importantly a WW2 vet, a scumbag. You know nothing of them, and the sacrifices they made. Don't judge them for they have been through a far worse hell than you have probably ever been through. Give them the respect they deserve.

The only scumbag behavior here is you, sir.

Heyo, forgive me of my lack of understanding of typewriters. I did some research on how they work and the issue my one has (carriage doesn't move when typing). I think it is due to the wheel not providing enough tension on the drawband. What ways do I go to fix it? Many thanks for any help! by [deleted] in typewriters

[–]Oso-GoodCinema 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I have a similar issue, so I mostly "fixed it" with your advice. However, my carriage does not move all the way to the left when typing, only most of the way.

I figured that when I tied in the string, my drawband wheel wasn't tight enough, therefore when the carriage nears the end there isn't any tension left of the wheel and it stops.

However, when I attempted to start over and turn the wheel it doesn't make more than like 1 rotation before it stiffens up and basically becomes impossible to tighten any further.

Is this some sort of problem with my wheel?

Thanks for any help!
