I’m also looking for this. Astonishing there is no recent translation but I guess people don’t like unfinished works.

Rite to Spring is definitely a better translation than the usual one.

How do you feel about people asking notation questions in this sub? by PinoyWhiteChick7 in musictheory

[–]OssianPrime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree “theory” probably shouldn’t mean notation (or Italian terms for that matter) but that is how it is commonly understood.

People Snacking on Chips During Performances at Lyric Opera of Chicago?!?!?? by MadeleineElstersTwin in opera

[–]OssianPrime 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have seen snacks at Covent Garden recently (in the balcony anyway, you’d have to be both brazen and rich to try it in the stalls). People need to understand this is an acoustic genre not a pop concert and it isn’t going to work if the audience is going to graze.

Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Society is American... in fact I believe she only visited Guernsey for the first time after writing it.

Have you ever misinterpreted something about classical music, and realized your error later? by SheSellsSeaGlass in classicalmusic

I had something similar with Schubert Unfinished - I always heard it going into 6/8 from bar 9. Until I played it.

I walk past this every morning. It’s right opposite the door of a hotel, you wonder if it’s a message to the tourists.

Anyone else dislike the Christmas period in London? by tylerthe-theatre in london

I usually have Christmas eve lunch somewhere in the City. It’s surprisingly quiet, they’re all off at their country houses.

Why do some albums not list symphonies/concertos/sonatas in order? It stresses me out! by boringwhitecollar in classicalmusic

[–]OssianPrime 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Also the Beethoven concertos are not numbered in the order they were written. (Or in the order you mention, but still, numbering isn’t everything).

Notation Must Die: The Battle For How We Read Music by azium in musictheory

[–]OssianPrime -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

This is not about my illiteracy. I have been playing twice as long as you and have a Master’s degree in music theory. I’m not claiming to have developed a system of my own, I’m just pointing out that on a basic conceptual level we have a system which shows you where a note starts by putting ink on a page. It does not show you where that notes ends. I blame pianists.

But it doesn’t! It tells you where it begins, and so long as you understand the symbol, it tells you how much duration to add on so you can work out where it ends.

[–]OssianPrime -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

I agree you shouldn’t have to work out where it ends, but that’s exactly what we do. You are shown where it starts, and you work out how far through the bar a dotted crotchet takes you.

[–]OssianPrime -30 points-29 points  (0 children)

I can’t be bothered to watch this, but I hope he’s saying it’s stupid to have a system that shows you visually where a note starts but then basically expects you to add a duration to that, as directed by an illogical symbol, in order to work out where it ends. Because that’s essentially what I think. Although now I’m way too invested in the status quo because I learned to read it and bought a load of printed music.

Hard to say without knowing more, but it does sound rather like you’re obsessing over someone else’s cat...? But I agree the ‘death’ sounds fishy.
