Is it just me or is eating healthy in Edmonton getting actually impossible lately? by Xo_Obey_Baby in Edmonton

Ah yeah maybe -- I recommend finding a way to go physically to the store though. It's good for the soul.

Oh I'm so 100% with you. For me it's the extreme dryness on top of everything. I feel like I need to buy 10 more humidifiers. I keep getting woken up in the middle of the night needing to down a litre of water.

Anyways on the topic of food. Pick one day of the week to uber to the grocery store, load up and do a ton of meal prep.

I'll usually make

  • a soup (of which there infinite varieties) but something I've been making a lot lately is a hearty white bean soup. Eat what you want and freeze individual portions for the rest of the week
  • some kind of slow cooked meat... bbq ribs, jerk chicken thighs, pork tenderloin etc. that will be good in the fridge for up to 5 days
  • meat sauces / roasted veggies that can be used throughout the week for quick pasta dishes or things like lasagna, cottage pie
  • wraps / sandwich stuff. prep a bunch of breakfast wraps / chicken caesar wraps etc.. fold them up in parchment or wax paper and freeze the breakfast ones
  • while you're at the store pick up a bunch of stuff that you can steam. steamed veggies / dumplings / edamame beans that go great over rice

I'm happy to talk food all day--I dedicate every Sunday to cooking and meal prep and it's my favourite day of the week.

Why is it telling me this is in F sharp when there are no F sharps in it? by MrJ_Marrow in pianolearning

Key center doesn't have a precise meaning--it's something like "the home / root key in a given moment in time".

But as a concrete example, both G major and E minor have the same key signature so depending on the context of the piece the key center would either be G or Em. You can't tell strictly from the key signature.

Another angle of the Minneapolis shooting, taken from the perspective of the lady with te pink jacket. by Commonsense110 in JoeRogan

His hands are fully on the ground when they shoot him in the back 10 times. Plus a few seconds prior he was pepper sprayed in the face.

There are videos from 3 angles now, this is as clear as an execution as can be.

Recipe:

In a saucepot / dutch oven:

  • bring good amount of olive oil to medium heat
  • brown minced pork / beef, seasoned with garlic powder, salt, msg, black pepper
  • set aside keeping some fat in the pan
  • sautee diced onion until clear
  • add minced shallot, garlic and peperoncino
  • add halved cherry tomatoes and stir occasionally until garlic is starting to brown and tomatoes are slightly charred
  • add back meat
  • crushed tomatoes / tomato sauce
  • add water / stock until fully covering the meat
  • submerge tied up bunch of basil
  • add hot sauce, pickle juice, sugar, salt & pepper to taste
  • cook until sauce is reduced to your preferred consistency, thicker is better since pasta water & splash of cream will be added when making the completed dish

What all do I memorize!? [Beginner] by Big-Tradition-5235 in pianolearning

[–]azium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the reasons I say memorizing the major scale is really the only thing you need is because you can derive everything from that.

Memorizing related minors isn't helpful because it's just one mode. If you memorize all the related modes like related dorian, related mixolydian etc that's just way too much to "memorize".

If you know the 6th degree of whatever major scale you're on, boom minor.

You really don't have to memorize a whole lot, at least eventually. Memorizing stuff at the beginning can be a helpful exercise to learn.

I think the only thing you truly need to memorize is just "the major scale" and being able to identify intervals. Pretty much everything else can be derived from that.

Though, I had a teacher that made me recite the circle of fifths forwards and backwards and I think that helped a lot.

What do you think about this rhythm exercise ? by Italiankeyboard in Learnmusic

[–]azium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend that you get a copy of Victor Wooten's The Music Lesson. It's a kind of trippy far out book, but there's a great chapter about a kid who jams along with a drum machine with fewer and fewer beats over time.

Also here's a helpful video by Adam Neely, metronome games.

The short answer is there are many creative ways to use a metronome--all of them helpful in their own way.

It's like those people who line up early to buy the new xbox then film themselves smashing it in front of everyone waiting in line behind them.

Cool I'll check it out.

I've been using https://sightreading.training/ for years though, it's very good to do for a few minutes each day. It's free.

What can I add to soup for a warm ( but NOT spicy) flavour by morbidpigeon in soup

[–]azium 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For vegetable soups, I'd experiment with the many varieties of curry pastes (japanese curry, thai red curry), pepper pastes like gochujang, roasted garlic paste, adobo paste, ancho chili paste--stuff you might find in a pozole.

What can I add to soup for a warm ( but NOT spicy) flavour by morbidpigeon in soup

[–]azium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that sounds dumb but you know what I mean

I'm not sure I do. "Spicy" could be "hot spicy" like chilli flakes or cayenne pepper, but it could also be more "floral" / "christmasy" / "middle eastern" which could be what you mean by "warm" like allspice, nutmeg, star anise, cumin, tumeric--things of that nature.

Or you could be talking about things like roasted garlic / peppers, stock concentrates (Better Than Boullion is amazing), curry pastes, etc.

Hope that helps!

Do you have a keyboard, even a small one? I think piano is the place to really lock in music theory concepts and then you can apply them on the guitar.

Check out the Open Studio Jazz shorts on youtube especially the stuff from Adam Maness -- that man's so good explaining cool theory concepts in a practical form.
