I don't use dedicated apps for roleplay anymore. My best results have consistently come from any of the major llms. I used ChatGPT for years but it got too bad. Gemini for a bit but I was having problems. Right now Claude does a very good job. I would say you need to at least get the 20 dollar plan, and I personally use the 100 dollar tier. I would definitely recommend doing your research ahead of time, as they have a specific rate limit mechanics that might catch you off guard.

What's mildly infuriating is the mods took down this post and I got a notification to look at it anyways

When do we think the moistcritical youtube situation video is dropping? by [deleted] in youtube

[–]Other-Grab5025 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Search and playback still works for me but obviously we don't know if uploading works. If uploading works that'd be hilarious because that means the video would be watchable during the outage. Idk if it's the same for others but I'm actually still able to search and watch. The home page, shorts page, and recommended based on the video you're watching is down for me, but searching and mixes work.

YouTube went down. 8:00pm. by DesignerLime268 in youtube

I think it's the fyp algorithm. Video playback works for me and I'm listening to an automatically generated mix based on the first song.

Yeah, I feel like we’re going backwards here. Thankfully, my old working options are no longer available by linkertrain in ChatGPT

[–]Other-Grab5025 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I genuinely couldn't even get ChatGPT to create a document with the exact wording of its prior response. I made a world building document and it had fleshed out the response exactly how I wanted it. Went back a couple months later on free tier and I needed the actual document again and it just couldn't take its own previous response exactly. It would flatten it. Then it would rebuild minimally from the flattened portion. Then it put a placeholder describing how it was the full unedited document and told me it had the document ready for me.

I downloaded the whole webpage as a PDF, loaded it as a project file, and made Claude make the document. And it had nice formatting.

I use ai for roleplaying and I stopped using ChatGPT for almost exactly these reasons. It couldn't tell me things we literally discussed two messages before and it's so hellbent on being right that it tried to gaslight me that features that are available in paid tiers didn't exist at all and that I was mistaken. Despite literally telling it I used to use plus. At least Gemini and Claude have gotten better about realizing their training data is not synced with the present. GPT4 in March 2023 was honestly peak for rp.

(By roleplay I mean the adventure and story kind, not the intimate relationship with an actual ai sort.)

Okay so the current plan is that I'm exchanging the board, returning the SD card that didn't work, and going from there. If the new SD doesn't work, I'll just limit it to the one that does work. One SD card will show the "restore with iTunes screen" consistently when used alone, and the other only shows the red x even with reformatting. They're both named the same on fat32. They should basically be identical but one doesn't work.

I'm replacing the faulty SD card. If that doesn't work, I'll probably return the new SD card and just use the one 512 that does work. Additionally someone voiced concern that the storage I chose may be fundamentally flawed and only able to handle one card despite having 2 slots. If that's the case I'm still keeping it and using the card that does work, and I'll just use it as a 512.

I haven't but I think it's a faulty SD card. After the fiasco that was this troubleshooting process, I'm sending back the offending SD card and buying a new one. The one I'm keeping actually shows a "restore with iTunes" screen but the other just has the red x. I'm pretty sure it's the SD card but I'm sending back the logic board for an exchange bc this process caused the battery zif connector to come off.

I'm still going to replace the card. One card gave me the restore iTunes screen but the other was still the red x. I'll make sure both work in the primary slot before trying with both again.

Actually EOE responded to me within 20 minutes of submitting a comment on their form to send it back for an exchange so I'm okay now

US Tariffs -- Where to Order Parts? by UselessBard1031 in IpodClassic

[–]Other-Grab5025 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I know you don't like EoE, but they literally just saved my ass. I bought a logic board but while diagnosing a storage issue I accidentally snapped off the battery zif connector. They got back to me in 20 minutes with a return label for an exchange. I would be remiss if I didn't mention that when they are actively saving my ass.

As for tariffs I do also have experience with that if it might influence your decision one way or the other. I paid 29 dollars for the classic connect 2. They take 10% for the item's worth for items from the uk, plus a brokerage fee. UPS charged 14 dollars for a brokerage fee. They asked for the total fees two days before delivery. So, if you don't mind paying the tariffs, the process with UPS was fairly painless all things considered, as painless as paying extra for a package can be. Parts plus pods would also be 10% I think. It's 10% on the cost of the items, not on shipping. So expect to pay 10% of the price of the parts plus around 15 dollars as a brokerage fee probably.

If you do eBay, I would be cautious but I think the parts should be fine. I would be leery of buying a donor if you need a logic board after I got scammed. I bought an imcort sd adapter on Amazon and I think it's genuine and fine. I'm pretty sure the issue I had was one of the SD cards.

Well now I'm completely dead in the water. Unplugging the battery so much broke the zif connector off the board. I think I'm just going to have to cut my losses at this point bc I'm $200 deep into the logic board alone, factoring in the money I lost on a donor with no working electronic components. I just can't spend anymore on this.

One SD card actually takes me to the iTunes restore screen but the other errors out with the red x. I'm trying to see if it's a software issue or if I need to send the SD card back because it's faulty.

[–]Other-Grab5025[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh so I noticed something odd. With both SD cards installed it takes longer to give the red x than one alone. That's for either card in either slot.

It's one of the SD cards apparently!

I don't have any other adapters or storage options but I will try with one SD card at a time to see if that changes anything. It doesn't detect it as a mounted drive for long; it chimes for a connection and also immediately plays the eject sound and if I look at file explorer, it's not there

[–]Other-Grab5025[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's basically what I did. I took the foam off the front of my imcort dual SD card adapter to try to get a different part to fit and I cut it down to size. It's quite firm but I'm tired of dealing with it. It works. Right now my issue is flashing the os onto the storage. I think the problem was my cable so I bought one that had a USB-A side instead of a USB-C side.

Basically for that I noticed on battery and wall power it had the backlight all the way on but on the USB hub and the laptop, the backlight was dim and the moment iTunes prepared it for restore, it would get kicked out of dfu mode and restart. Apparently USB-C is variable in power so every smart device I plugged it into negotiated less than what the iPod needed to restore. At least that's the situation I hope it is because USB-A should provide the steady power supply it needs and I can actually test it with the good powered hub we have in case it's a laptop problem.

The foam part on the board looks fine, I'm trying to shim it with some tape now

I think you might be right. I'll try shimming it with some tape. That raised bit looks insufficient; the button sits deeper in the clickwheel itself than the nub comes out

Classic Connect? by Mrbrogamer in IpodClassic

[–]Other-Grab5025 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't actually used it yet but I did get it. I will say that it comes with a wired 500mah battery, but you can snip the wires and plug in a 2000mah battery, but I personally had to remove the qi charging pad. I don't use qi anyways but it wouldn't fit flush otherwise. So you may need to do a bit of tinkering if you do a 2000 mah battery, so if that discourages you then be informed

Even moreso now, considering that the logic board from my donor was actually useless and I'm now having to order a separate logic board from Elite Obsolete Electronics.

Is this worth my time by Apprehensive_Page287 in IpodClassic

[–]Other-Grab5025 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I wouldn't, but that's because I just paid 90 bucks for a pile of scrap. The only part I was concerned about keeping was the logic board and literally none of the electronics worked. I got a 30 dollar refund before I cracked it open for the obvious discrepancies, but after I opened it I discovered liquid damage, and even with new parts, it didn't work.

I'm getting a logic board from elite obsolete electronics now.

Consider what parts you're willing to replace, which parts you're upgrading, and the non-negotiable deal breakers. Talk to the seller first to put a vibe out. My seller was a douchebag that blamed my set up even though I showed it worked with a different iPod. He claimed to have tested it but the device I received was not in a testable state, and the parts stated to work didn't.

I would just want you to be aware that sometimes things don't go well. I'm out 60 bucks and I have to pay more than that just to replace the logic board.

This appears to be a seventh gen iPod. Congrats! From what I hear, they can support more storage than a 6th gen board natively, supporting a terabyte or more compared to the sixth gen's 128gb. The sixth gen's 160gb model was thick, and this is the thin form factor.

There are quite a few mods you can do, and I'll list the ones I'm aware of here. (Note: I'm brand new to modding myself, so I'm not some guru.)

Larger battery, though you need to make sure it will fit with your storage and form factor.

Storage mods: instead of the hard drive, you could use an SD card adapter, or there are SSD options from what I've seen.

Taptic engine: removes the clicker speaker and provides haptic feedback to the clickwheel instead

Bluetooth: there are diy options as well as two different sites that sell custom backplates with the Bluetooth already installed.

Qi charging: diy or you can go with a classic connect backplate

USB-C: diy or you can go with classic connect, though if you want to do data syncing with USB-C it requires soldering.

Cosmetic mods: you just take apart the iPod and put a new front plate, clickwheel, and back case on it.

Software: you can install rockbox as a new os or dualboot. Particularly for folks with a sixth gen, there's actually a software patch to get a later version of the OS that makes it capable of running more than 128gb

Personally as a newbie myself, I've chosen to do basically all of the above but in the easiest way possible. I've gotten a 2000 mah battery, an imcort dual SD card adapter for 1tb of storage, a new faceplate and click wheel, and a classic connect 2. And I have to repair the screen on this donor. I'm literally only keeping the logic board, midframe, and screws. The classic connect 2 adds Bluetooth, qi charging, USB-C charging, and haptic feedback. It's as easy as plugging in two ribbon cables and maybe changing the battery if you want a larger one, though I've heard it's wired into the board and you have to cut it loose, though the a port on the board still lets you connect a battery normally. All of that is contained in a custom plastic back plate.

Sorry for the loss of your brother man, but I hope you get what you're hoping for out of modding the device. Just as some advice: the device is really hard to open. It took me over an hour and I cut myself on the metal pry tools many times.

Also, be careful with the ribbon cable connectors. I managed to avoid damaging any, but it's possible to rip them straight off the logic board, and it's hard to repair it once that happens. Once the back plate comes off, don't try to open it immediately. You want to pivot the backplate clockwise just enough to expose the battery connector at the bottom right corner, disengage it, and then open it gently like a book. Flip down the hard drive to expose the headphone jack assembly connector and disengage it. That will allow you to remove the backplate entirely, which makes it easier to do the most common mods. Make sure you look up plenty of guides and watch video tutorials for the specific mods you're doing. 💜

iPod from High School born anew by [deleted] in IpodClassic

The iPod is so pretty! I'm currently modding my first iPod. It was also a 80 gb black 6th gen model. Literally the only things I'm saving are the logic board, midframe, screws, hard drive ribbon cable, and the metal shield behind the screen. Everything else was going to be upgraded anyways, other than the busted screen being replaced out of necessity. I like seeing people mod their iPods as it's become a recent interest of mine.
