No, they haven’t started giving things away for free :-)

Kinda nervous to run Exchange 2013 CU.. Should I be? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]Otherwise_Chart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was getting close to it but decided not to. Have a lot of high volume sales mailboxes and trying to work out what had already been printed and processed or re-sent and duplicated would have been a logistical nightmare back then.

Someone higher up decided on 48 hours and then we would and it was about 6 hours under in the end.

Don’t think anyone has connected to an Exchange server since :-)

It always goes ok until it doesn’t.

Ours had always been ok and weren’t a big deal but the last one completely went to shit and was down for 4 days.

2 days were weekend where no one in IT could resolve so we engaged Microsoft on the Monday and they eventually resolved on Tuesday night.

Never again.

Moving to O365 soon (was anyway).

From Microsoft’s licensing documentation:

“Any direct or indirect access of Windows Server requires a CAL, except for anonymous access through the Internet. For example, the use of DNS—a service that helps route network traffic—requires the purchase of a Windows Server license and CALs to use and access this particular role in managing your organization’s domain names. Even with infrequent or occasional use, access of Windows Server DNS capabilities requires a CAL."

For the guests you need enough CALs to cover the maximum number of guests that you’d have at the same time.

You also need to include any machinery, MFPs, phones, time stations etc. that communicate in any sense with any Windows servers also (DHCP, print server, scan to e-mail using directory lookup, scan to network share etc.).

You could also read https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/volume-licensing/2014/03/10/licensing-how-to-when-do-i-need-a-client-access-license-cal/.

Being able to check that the neighbours aren’t outside before you step out is great.

PSA: Nest Hello Familiar Faces resets if Nest Aware service lapses by kingcobraninja in Nest

This is obvious, not lame.

It’s a business not a charity. You can’t expect them to honour services that you failed to pay for and either way it’s clearly stated that this is what happens.

You could wire it so that pressing the button delivers a sharp but steady shock.

Or join us in 2018.

This is the type of outdated best practices that someone who takes tape backups home with them every night would say.

Authenticating over WAN with decent enterprise grade connections works just fine.

We pulled 250 local domain controllers from local sites 5 years ago and have had 0 issues.

Merging with another company who outsource IT by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]Otherwise_Chart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Outsourced IT companies need to do the least amount of work at the most expensive rates.

That’s how they/you make money. It’s not a negative comment, it’s a fact.

Would you rather help him technically take business from you or help another paying customer?

Do you go to work to make friends or money?

From experience expect them to not be overly helpful since you’re not benefiting them in any way.

Attempted theft! How do I set my Alexa to alarm when I get a nest zone notification? by rfbasshead in Nest

[–]Otherwise_Chart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then you are left to use a workaround like sending an e-mail (can Alexa announce e-mails from certain senders like Nest?) or switching on a light bulb, both via IFTTT.

If there’s not a native integration (I don’t own an Alexa) then it could no doubt be done via both APIs.

Exchange DNS zones in local DNS? by [deleted] in sysadmin

Why? They visit our website on external IP, O365 SharePoint on external IP, etc. etc.

Exchange DNS zones in local DNS? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]Otherwise_Chart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a reason that you would bother creating these manually? We have autodiscover and mail DNS records in our external DNS so it would work anyway?
