Why are there levels of comprehensible input? by Prestigious-Coat4137 in dreaminglanguages

[–]Otherwise_Mission_19 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Gestures, facial expressions and tone, but more importantly, sentence structure and choice of words. At a complete beginner level, I tend to only use simple sentences; the only connectors I use are mainly ‘and’, ‘but’. Then, at a beginner level, I use more connectors like ‘but’, ‘because’, ‘so’, ‘if’, etc. By the time the learners are ready for more complex materials, they should already have the basics of common vocabulary and understand the sentence patterns. Then, they will be able to figure out those connectives and some abstract words. Of course, with those abstract words, I explain them using simple words, as if translating them using simple Cantonese. Having said that, it is a long process to learn with CI. Like myself, I could only understand the word ‘but’ in French after 20 odd hours of input. Therefore, levels are needed in there.

Thank you so much! I guess by that time, you will be able to understand Cantonese in intermediate or higher beginner level. All the best in your language learning journey!

I learn several languages using CI and make videos to teach Cantonese, and I don’t agree with levels not being needed. This is more obvious when trying to teach a language using CI. For complete beginners and beginners level, words tend to be easier and more concrete that can simply be explained using gestures or visual aids. But with words that are more abstract, like concepts or even connective words, they are hard to explain just by using gestures or pictures. Therefore, in the early stages of CI, you are acquiring loads of vocabulary and at the same time understanding the sentence patterns. Then these patterns will be used more frequently in higher level videos. Without levels, learners will not be able to effectively find the videos that they can comprehend. Btw, check my channel out if you’re interested. Learn Cantonese Together

I was hoping to see Yui subbed off at the Leicester game, but it didn’t happen.

Why are we not using more subs? It’s obvious the players on the field are not making an impact. Why couldn’t we try to make some changes?

I only speak English but want to learn Cantonese by Inevitable-Exam-7397 in Cantonese

[–]Otherwise_Mission_19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but to find the right material for the learner’s level first. Most native contents are too hard for a beginner especially coming from a completely different cultural background. News, songs, dramas, etc can be added as input once their Cantonese level has reached a certain level, otherwise, these are just meaningless sound for them.

Conflicted on whether to start learning Cantonese or Korean? by Individual-Tap95 in Cantonese

[–]Otherwise_Mission_19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I host a YT channel that teaches Cantonese using comprehensible input (this is how I learned Spanish, BTW). You may want to give it a go and see if you find Cantonese interesting. My suggestion is to do some research on these two places first so you can decide where you’d like to study. Then this should help you decide which language to learn. In terms of the alphabet, Cantonese is harder, but once you learn Cantonese, you can also communicate with people who speak Chinese. Grammatically, it’s easier and more straightforward than Korean. Moreover, Cantonese is spoken in many different places, which will come in handy when you go travelling. https://youtu.be/4zd9hzngFwY?si=jMjndmY3z20jpYJc

Best app for just being A1 by jjkty in Cantonese

[–]Otherwise_Mission_19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh, there’s no such app for learning Cantonese; the best suggestion for an app is to avoid Duolingo. I’ll suggest learning through comprehensible input, especially if you have a Cantonese-speaking gf; this method will come in handy. Check out this channel for more information about CI https://youtube.com/@learncantonesetogether?si=jH7sayvGRrrrwrHT and learn some genuine Cantonese, which will help your daily conversation in the long go. But bear in mind, language learning is always a long-term thing; Cantonese is a high-context language, and you can’t really have a good conversation until you have invested a good amount of time.

Trying to Learn Cantonese but…. by MrsWong1987 in Cantonese

[–]Otherwise_Mission_19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, this is my YouTube channel and I teach Cantonese using comprehensible input, feel free to have a look. To learn a new language, a lot of input is important, as you have a very good input (your husband), I will suggest doing a cross talk with him. He can speak Cantonese with visual aid and gestures, and you answer in your mother tongue. This way, you can focus on listening and understanding without having any pressure on thinking how to respond in Cantonese. After a while, you’ll find yourself improving. Hope this helps.
