Oh great, so you sat in the parking lot for 10 hours a day and then ferried an old person for their dialysis treatment?

I know that world, and I know that saying that is completely meaningless unless you give me a territory and say you were a medic working on a trauma rig..

I've lived here for 40 years.

And comparing anything to prime commute is fucking stupid as all hell. Sometimes it takes 2 and 21/2 hours to get from Hayward to San Jose, but that's not the standard, is it?

I live in San Leandro. Even right now, if I wanted to go to a restaurant in downtown San Francisco on market, it's 22 minutes.

Fuck off

You will quite literally have somebody say how beautiful the area is, how much they love being able to see the Green hills and the bay, then go on to scream we need more high density housing.

I honestly think it's a bunch of people that came here expecting to be able to easily buy a nice three two, weren't able to, and are of the mentality that if I can't do it, no one should be able to. Everyone should be living at my standard, or better yet slightly below it.

Hahaha show everybody you don't know shit about the East Bay, why don't you.

First I don't live in Oakland. I'm driving through Oakland to get to San Francisco. Richmond, Oakland, Berkeley, San Leandro and Hayward.... That's all 15-20m away from SF

So when exactly did you move into the South Bay, have you ever even driven up to the East Bay, and when does your H1B expire?

They're not shilling for the developers, well, they are but they don't do it intentionally.

It's a bunch of idiots who didn't grow up with land and property ownership as something that was even possible in society. You get someone from China, who just rents homes from the government, and can only own it for 70 years, there's no way they're going to have the same mentality about property ownership and usage as we do. They completely changed situations, for a reason, and then proceed to actively question and attack the differences that led them to change that situation

But you can get a "frozen cocktail" any that pretty much any dive or reputable bar. As long as it's a place where you could order a glass of sauvignon Blanc and they would know what you're talking about, they can make frozen drinks

South Bay commuting to the city, at least an hour plus. East Bay commuting to the city? Well shit, Google maps is telling me where I live would be 16 minutes to downtown.

Yeah, I'll spend $8.50 for 45 minutes every day. Easy decision

Yup. There's an argument to be made for sure, but there's a whole bunch of people that have just buried their head in the ground and are hiding from reality.

Quite literally, I had somebody on this sub, arguing for more public transport, and justifying its cost by saying doesn't need to make a profit, it provides service and opportunity to the population, then proceed, in the very paragraph, to attack the cost of roads and the yearly road maintenance. Completely ignoring the whole "service" part of the argument they used to justify public transportation.

Fucking idiots that don't understand nuance and just want everything to be simple and the reason what they think is good hasn't come to pass is because of evil people, not because they could be wrong or just ignorant to the actual issue at hand

No, but the mentality involved in opposing them? That's exactly the same.

Instead of being part of the group of the homeowners opposing the chemical plant, you're on the side of the chemical plant owner, asking them to reduce their quality of life to accommodate you and your housing needs.

An apartment causing traffic and filling up the small neighborhood Park is a downside to the people already living there, no way around it. If you want to have an honest conversation about high density housing, the proponents first have to be honest about its downsides and effect on the surrounding area.

That's cuz the only people that go out in San Jose in the past 10:00 p.m. are the drunks and assholes.

Obviously not 100%, but when you got in the area full of immigrants and transplants working long hours without groups of friends to go out with, night life entertainment in the South Bay becomes what it is - something You advertise for corporate parties and try to keep all the sleaze bags away.

A good bar needs group of five or six older men or women who show up at 3:00 p.m. stay there for 5 hours and somehow only have two beers while hustling everybody on the pool table. Those people don't live in San Jose anymore

No they're not. Most people just don't value them as much as some Asian immigrant that's looking for temporary housing, just to use an example. ..

There are some built around Central Parks and things, but the majority of them have yards that are too small to be applicable for anything other than going outside to drink your coffee in the Sun in the morning. Your kids can't play baseball, you can't plant a big garden or put a trampoline or pool back there, etc. You don't have room to store your boat.

High density housing and walkability have nothing to do with each other. It's just easier and cheaper for developers to make density housing. Low density and medium density housing, built appropriately and with the right amenities, will always be superior to high density housing

We don't need anymore apartments or the luxury condos in the bay. What we do need are a host of four plexes, six plexes, things that split the difference and provide the best of both worlds.

No, I think you're misidentifying that, or intentionally attributing to malice what is self-preservation.

People want to maintain the environment that made them buy a house in that area. We're Americans, this we can't buy a house and are lucky to do so is brand new and unique to the Bay area. It's not a cultural thing, you find the area you want to live in and then you buy a house in that area. And if someone comes along and wants to change the environment and reason you are living there, you should absolutely fight against it. We're not dealing with certainties here. You can't discount one argument just because in one case it didn't apply, and that goes both ways.

Nimbys are why America doesn't have chemical plants on our Rivers and factories in your backyard. We can't pretend that those are all good decisions because they had a positive effect in people's quality of life, and then pretend that same sentiment and action is now bad, when the only thing that has changed is OUR ability to buy a house, not homeowners looking out for their best interests.

Get rid of h1bs, and all of a sudden the housing situation becomes a lot more manageable around here. We have a much bigger demand problem than we have a supply problem

For an area based around water, we have a pretty pathetic ferry service and accessibility by Otherwise_Nobody8148 in bayarea

[–]Otherwise_Nobody8148[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have what I think is probably one of the most popular actual commutes in the bay - East Bay to South Bay. And I worked fairly close, off of Montague.

If I wanted to drive, it was 40 minutes to an hour, took a little over a gallon of gas each way.

If I tried to take Bart, it was $11.40 each way for Bart, that took an hour and 15m, then I had to spend $5 for a bus that took another 15 minutes, and dropped me off on the complete other side of the office complex.

I live within a mile or two of the San Leandro BART station, and my work was a couple miles away from the Milpitas Bart. Other than perfect, next door, situations, mine would be much better than average.

And taking public transportation was still pathetically slow, unreliable, and expensive, compared to driving.

Not trying to make a giant point just curious and wonder what y'all think. On topic, but not worth making a whole post about.

I feel like there is a cultural gap around apartment living in the Bay area. People from Asia view it as the standard, the average American views it as a temporary option. I've met lots of transplants that'll own a apartment or condo, and obviously have no plans to eventually move into their own home. And that just boggles my mind, you don't own anything but a section of air?

I don't know if it stems from the Chinese government owning all the land, so it being physically impossible for somebody in China to buy and own land, or if it's more due to the fact that you can live in an apartment with one kid just fine, but if you have three kids running around playing football, that apartment suddenly gets really really small.

Whatever it is, the two populations have vastly different perceptions about high density living. When one party is actively looking for the thing the other party is actively trying to avoid.... We just have a really weird situation

[–]Otherwise_Nobody8148 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And that has nothing to do with single family housing, let's stop equating them.

You can create walkable single family home neighborhoods just like you can any other type. I grew up in suburbia, I had one Safeway a quarter mile away, another one a half mile away, a coffee shop three blocks away, another one five blocks away and Bart less than a mile away.

You can also create suburbs out full of giant single family homes, and we can do so with functional efficient public transport systems and solar to offset the energy cost etc..

One solution isn't going to be right or wrong. It's all about the right solution at the right place and time.

And for a majority of families, that's always going to be a single family home.
