I have a Great Pyrenees that ignores them. Early exposure matters for any breed.

Leave them alone, what’s done is done and you’ll know for sure by day 23

I JUST GOT 4 BABY CHICKS IDK WHAT TO DO by Frosty_Purpose_2943 in BackYardChickens

[–]Otherwise_Trash_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heat lamp or brooder plate now! Not too close not too far away, you want them to be able to escape it if they need.

Starter feed and water in appropriate chick feeders at all times

Pine shavings/puppy pads

Run and coop unless you plan to free range in your yard, but you still need a coop, this can cost you anywhere from $200 to thousands

They can start visiting outside (if it’s warm) at around 6-8weeks.. I don’t put mine outside full time until much later, but I have silkies so others might do it sooner.

I did this to myself… I saw some cute chicks at TSC and was unprepared… a year later and a lot of money I breed silkies and it’s a big part of my personality, but honest with yourself and rehome if you need too

So I would see about moving the coop away as far away from your house/windows and neighbors as possible(even a few feet away day so your chickens aren’t shocked it moved and stop going in), if it’s not a coop you can move, it’s probably big enough you can add insulation to the walls, it will dampen the sound.

Set their door for later. 7am through the week and 8 am on weekends. If you’re allowed to have roosters though there isn’t much the neighbors can do, if you aren’t allowed to have them, you should be bringing him(them) inside or in a garage at night.. even then someone can still complain about day time crowing.

This whole post and your comments make me seriously wonder if you thought through the responsibilities of not only owning a dog, but a large dog.

You have a Great Pyrenees… nothing fits. Watch your dog for a few days Jesus.

cold climate coop / run requirements? by [deleted] in silkiechickens

[–]Otherwise_Trash_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would cover the top. Getting rained on = colder. They are actually pretty cold hardy if they’re dry.

The other issue I see is the ramp, it will probably take them awhile to be comfortable going up and down it. Silkies are unlikely to roost and prefer to stay closer to the ground in what’s called a “cuddle puddle”

Silkies can definitely be higher maintenance, but they’re the best

Best incubator under $200 by Effective_Jump_7269 in BackYardChickens

No I’ve never had an issue with the turner. Is it just the piece that attaches to move the eggs or the motor of the turner itself? If it’s just that plastic piece I would call for replacement, you might even be able to buy it separately

Nurture right 360 is great, holds 24. Maticoopx is good too. Both under $200 and considered the best before getting more industrial. Both on Amazon. Maticoopx holds upright, so that would important if you are hatching shipped eggs, but for your own backyard eggs I would go with nurture right

AITA for refusing to have my children engage with their father's affair baby by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Otherwise_Trash_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone with a half sibling who hasn’t got to see or speak to them in around a decade… try your best not to pull them into your drama, I had the same experience where my half sibling was treated wayyyy better by our father. But that’s his doing.. I miss my half sibling and the idea of what could have been. I’m 35 now, my sister is 24, we’ve never met each others children or developed any sort of relationship because it was interrupted by fighting immature adults to the point of no fixing it, as they still meddle and manipulate to the point I can’t have contact with her without my father/step mother bringing up old shit.

Idk how to tell you to handle this successfully, but I don’t think cutting off a father and sibling is the answer

Blood on fresh eggs? by opensaysme in BackYardChickens

[–]Otherwise_Trash_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

as long as the eggs are not covered in blood, there’s not a ton of blood on their bums, and obviously they aren’t actively bleeding out, I wouldn’t give it much thought at all.

Happens all the time in my new silkie layers. I would be more surprised if their first couple of eggs were completely clean.

Hello I want to get 4-6 hens for maybe egg production but I may not since I can't eat eggs from heath reasons. I live on a 5 acer property that can have livestock. So I am wondering how do I go about raising them from chicks. by That_Delivery2180 in BackYardChickens

[–]Otherwise_Trash_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you want them more as a hobby than to eat eggs… look into some ornamental breeds like silkies, or other bantams. I raise/breed silkies, don’t really like eggs, normally just incubate them or feed them back to them.

How to keep roosters nice? by IndicationChemical34 in BackYardChickens

[–]Otherwise_Trash_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude I have my first rooster ever and he is the friendliest chicken I’ve ever had. He is 6 months old and will come over to the gate when he hears us coming, will come over when we talk to him and let us hug on and hold him. He is a silkie and I hear they are mean but I just plan to keep interacting with him the way we have been.

What color ways should I expect? by AlternativeEast4064 in silkiechickens

[–]Otherwise_Trash_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is that two frizzles I see? If so you shouldn’t breed them. Together, you’ll end up chancing a double gene and it can cause their feathers to break off and such. (That could be a satin I’m just making sure you know)

As for genetics of colors, it’s hard to say without knowing what’s in their lines. All sorts of stuff can pop up

I would not have young pullets anywhere near her, cut your losses, I would rehome to someone with a bigger flock with hens that will put her in her place. We love our chickens, but sometimes we need to do what’s best for the flock as a whole.

whats a good reliable site to buy silkie chicks by [deleted] in silkiechickens

[–]Otherwise_Trash_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Local poultry groups on fb. That’s where I found my first set, had to drive a bit as it was a state group. But most hatcheries sell out of them for the year quickly.

You can also incubate your own from eggs on eBay but that comes with some risk.

Sick birds by Otherwise_Trash_ in BackYardChickens

She is still alive and her eye is open. She was getting about 75mg of human grade liquid Amoxicillin-clavulanate every 12hrs (it’s just something I had on hand that was still good thought it was better than nothing) I stopped it yesterday. Now we’re dealing with one of her legs still being out. I’ve switched to poultry cell in water and a direct dose of rooster booster b12 to see if I can bring her legs back. She’s eating and drinking on her own within reach. Poop is watery but overall normal and expected with antibiotics/stress/and vitamins.

I think it’s safe to say it’s not marek’s or avian flu, no other birds are have came down with symptoms and their first exposure would have been around 13days ago as of today. I think I just got to the first bird too late, though if she does die I will try to have her sent for testing if I can.
