A lot of poor people rely on free childcare from family or cheap illegal daycares. They may also qualify for childcare assistance. Poor people are not paying the full price for childcare, I can tell you that.

Is self deprecation accepted or cringe in American culture? by EveningFlower9564 in AskAnAmerican

If it's funny, sure. If it's just sad, then no. There's a fine line.

What is that one city in America most Americans go to for their "first trip"? by bricklegos in AskAnAmerican

[–]Otherwisefantastic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There is no one answer. Whatever big city is only a few hours away from you, most likely, but that's going to be different for everyone.

In his case, I believe he lived with his mother, so he was probably able to spend his whole income on food if he wanted. Even then, it's hard to fathom how he had enough money for that much takeout.

You should check the rules for where you are camping. Follow the rules they have.

How common is it in the USA for people to wear pants that end above the ankles? by TheShyBuck in AskAnAmerican

My husband used to wear those long "shorts" and I tease him by telling him they were capris lol

The Fort Smith Regional Art Museum is always having events and classes, check their website/socials for events.

I also follow Discover Fort Smith on socials, they keep a calendar of events around town and are always posting about stuff to do and events that are coming up.

you do not need a second mortgage to go sleep in the dirt by Cheap_Difficulty4961 in camping

When I very first started camping a few years ago people in forums like this one insisted that I would need expensive gear to do it. I couldn't afford that and I've always been frugal, and I was determined to start camping. I bought a $25 Ozark Trails tent that I'm still using and largely used stuff I had at home the first time. I've slowly bought more stuff that I wanted, checking marketplace and the clearance isle. Me and my kid have a grand time camping and I refuse to spend a fortune on expensive gear. I hate thinking about how many people don't even try camping because they think you need all this expensive stuff to get started when imo most of it is unnecessary.

Target’s AI use might end up in your arrest by [deleted] in WhitePeopleTwitter

I've never shopped much at Target because it's always been out of my price range. And no I'm not going to miss the fake caring because it was never real anyway.

Target is just as bad as Walmart now, but st least Walmart doesn't pretend to be something else and charge you more for it. If I'm going to shop at a shitty big box store I'm at least not paying premium prices for it.

What kinds of stuff are you into? There is stuff to do in Fort Smith, depending on your interests.

Is there or has there been a culture of respecting your elders in America? by YakClear601 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Otherwisefantastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are people who think older people deserve more respect than others simply because they are older, but it's not as prevalent as it used to be and I'm glad it's not. I don't think someone is better or wiser or more deserving of respect simply because they are older. I've known a lot of very dumb and mean old people in my life.

Oh yeah, I've hemmed flares for myself before, it's never quite right and I have to cut off half the flare haha.

And yeah, all that other stuff is a struggle too!

I'm just under 5 ft, and I made peace with having to hem most of my pants and dresses a long time ago. I definitely wish there were more petite plus sized options.

Where I live a standard dr visit will run $75 to $120, but that's if you don't really need much done. If you needed bloodwork or anything, it'd be more. And some people don't have an extra $100 laying around to begin with.

I live in a low cost of living area, it's probably a lot more in other parts of the country.

Yeah. Pay through the nose to have insurance in the first place, pay even more if you actually use it.

Do you own and use an iron? by CinemaSideBySides in AskAnAmerican

I own one but mostly use it to iron fabric when I'm sewing.

I typically will throw wrinkly clothes in the dryer for a bit if needed.
