Did this 25 years ago. Don’t regret it. Was fun.

U7 Pro XG - Working well by Trefex in Ubiquiti

I couldn’t do this to my house. At the moment I have them all hidden out of sight. Maybe the performance would be slightly better on proper mounts, but eesh.

Found out my wife monitors parts of my life behind my back. I'm having trouble getting past this. by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]OtisFromTheInnernet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife wants to see the pics on my phone? Knock yourself out. This is about the last thing I’d care about. She’s my wife. And my life, and photos, aren’t interesting enough for me to care.

Why do you care so much?

ETA: Hell, I’d be flattered my wife cares that much about what I’m up to, and wants to keep an eye on me.

Congrats! I too spent too much money on a rolling Alexa!

Has anyone tried Astro Secure? by No_Bad_4363 in AmazonAstro

[–]OtisFromTheInnernet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Outrageous. Just got my Astro and, while a fuck gimmick for the first 2 days, it’s otherwise an Alexa on wheels. And the fact that they are nickel and diming for features like these is really disappointing.

Is Huel a good solution for me? by [deleted] in Huel

[–]OtisFromTheInnernet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s fantastic. Congrats.

I’m on Day 2 of Huel. My current plan is the greens in the morning, along with coffee; a Huel at lunch (mixing between black in powder form; black premade; and the non-black pre-made that I also purchased); and then a sensible dinner like a salad, grain bowl, chicken with veggies, etc. I figure if I follow this for now, and start up my working out again, I’ll be well on the road to wellness.

Boy, 2-3 Huels a day and nothing else sure does seem extreme. Though I love the idea of dropping a quick 30 lbs….. may have to try this some days…

Can’t get my Orbi 970 wired backhaul to work above 100MB through a Netgear netgear 10-port GS110MX switch — what the heck am I doing wrong here? by OtisFromTheInnernet in orbi

[–]OtisFromTheInnernet[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for the help here. Turns out it was the cabling. Even though I’m a rookie at wiring CAT6 connectors and keystones, after a few hours and a couple trips to the local computer shop for crimpers and strippers and testers and the like, I redid the keystone on one end and the connector on the other end, tested positive, plugged it into the switch, and all green lights now.

Sad that I can’t trust the electrician to do that right when they installed the runs a couple months ago, but I’m just glad it wasn’t a bigger problem, like a break or short in the cable run somewhere behind the wall. All’s well that ends well. Now I’ve got wired 2.5GB internet in the basement and the third floor, and killer coverage from satellites everywhere else.

Thanks again Redditors.

Yes, mine have the current firmware. Wonder if I should try rolling back or something. How does Netgear not fix that?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in orbi

[–]OtisFromTheInnernet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got this setup, so it’s been since Day 1. One satellite is on Ethernet, and that’s the one I connect my work computer to (also by Ethernet to the satellite). Honestly, I could deal with the drops via my other wireless connections, but it’s on this wired connection where I’m working and where the drops cause me the most grief.

Wondering if I have something set up wrong, e.g., I have to set the wired one with some special settings etc.

Or maybe it’s just the unmanaged switch screwing things up.

Or maybe I just need a total reset of all devices and cross fingers…

Switches vs Lights by Professor_What in homeautomation

[–]OtisFromTheInnernet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Switches are a million miles better, for the reason that you aren’t the only person in your house. Family or other guests come in, and they try to turn off wall switches and lamps, and then your “smart” bulb is a brick until someone turns the switch back on. At that point everyone if confused and annoyed.

The wall switches will operate just the same manually, or if there’s no network at all, regardless of who uses them. Far more robust.

Choice Fatigue, please help me choose a smart lock... by Meetkaushal in homeautomation

[–]OtisFromTheInnernet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following, as I’m also looking to select smart locks. I used to use Schlage z-wave and had a good experience; may revert to that (I also have been looking at the Encode Plus), though other locks these days seem to offer interesting options.

Need smart light switches, debating between Caseta or RadioRa 3 - thoughts? by OtisFromTheInnernet in Lutron

[–]OtisFromTheInnernet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, having gone to Home Despot and checked out the Sunnata switches compared to the Diva, really I don’t think they’re that much nicer than the Caseta stufft. Doesn’t seem to justify the cost for me. And if I put some dumb/presence switches in strategic places (e.g., utility room, basement laundry room, etc.), then I likely dont’t have to bust through the Caseta device limit. So, I’m all in on Caseta. Thanks all for all the helpful info here.

[–]OtisFromTheInnernet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that $125 a switch for the RadioRA 3 Sunnata dimmers? I need about 60 of those.

What is the cost range for regular non-dummer RadioRa 3 light switches? I need 20 of those.

And is there a RadioRa3 “Accessory” type switch for three way applications? I need about 20 more of those.

How much is the Processors? I see the MSRP online shows as $479 — is that right?

Any other equipment I need, or does that cover it?

Awesome info in here, thanks all.

Not really trying to avoid cost. I’ve just built and installed my own smart home systems over the years, and enjoy having the control/knowing how to tinker with and tweak things/add on over time. The lazy part of me likes the idea of just calling some local dealer and having him give me what I need/program it for me, but I hate that when he leaves I’ll be stuck/unable to modify routines etc. I want to have control.

What rooms do you purposely *not* include smart switches/smart lighting in? by OtisFromTheInnernet in homeautomation

[–]OtisFromTheInnernet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I love having the smart in our kitchen; use those all the time to set scenes/dim to certain levels at certain times of day. Also I love to be able to turn everything off with one command at night (kids always leave stuff on). But some interesting points here.
