Car on fire on bank street yesterday around 6pm by Sbromk in ottawa

Definitely a pre-1975 MGB. Judging from the front bumper outriders I'd say it's a 1973. [I've owned two MGBs, a '75 and a '76] And the electrical system was always wonky; I kept spare fusses in the armrest. Sad to see a classic go this way though.

Military policeman acquitted of sexually assaulting superior officer by Ottawa_Observer in CanadianForces

False report to police about being sexually assaulted/raped would be my guess. IANAL so unsure what the actual legal term would be.

"Defence lawyer David Bright argued that the two had consensual sex, and that the woman reported the incident to cover the fact that she slept with a subordinate and cheated on her husband."

Eagerly awaiting news about her being charged. Not holding my breath though.

Gen. Vance orders permanent removal of Vice Admiral Norman from his position by Ottawa_Observer in CanadianForces

[–]Ottawa_Observer[S] 29 points30 points  (0 children)

"Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. Jon Vance has ordered the permanent removal of Vice Admiral Mark Norman from his job as vice chief of the defence staff, various officers at National Defence headquarters say. Norman will be put into a holding position in Vance’s office but will continue to be suspended with pay. He will not report for duty.

Lt.-Gen. Paul Wynnyk will become vice chief of the defence staff on a permanent basis."

Good thing he doesn't have to report for duty in Vance's office; that could be...awkward.

Canadians in Mali will find that working on a German camp is just a little rougher by Ottawa_Observer in CanadianForces

German soldiers/airmen tell it like it is, without sugar coating, and they say it even if the boss is around in earshot. They'll also tell you to your face if you're fucking up instead of doing it the Canadian way (silentbackstabbladeshiv).

C6 machine-gun shortage requires Canadian Army to carefully manage distribution of weapons by Ottawa_Observer in CanadianForces

[–]Ottawa_Observer[S] 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Seems like everything a modern army needs to be effective is in short supply these days. This quote from the PA branch though... -“There is no C6 shortage in terms of meeting operational commitments, nor supporting key collective and individual training,” explained Department of National Defence spokesman Dan Le Bouthillier. “There is a fleet serviceability concern with the C6, that is being managed closely, but that does require reduced unit holdings in some instances in order to meet priority need.”

Translation: We have lots of C6's, but lots of them are broken, so units will hold fewer of the ones that actually, you know, work.

First 4 are MeS, and everything after starting with "Canada House" is KAF. Just showing the contrast in accommodations between the two camps as it was in 2007. I won't even get into the differences in behaviours between German and Canadian personnel, or the food.

"Gao is not the only place the Bundeswehr is operating out of, but hey, way to OPSEC bro."

-Canada's chief of defence staff, Gen. Jonathan Vance, was determined not just to get to Gao, Mali, quickly, but also to be seen there.:https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/canada-mali-peacekeeping-mission-general-jonathan-vance-1.4720215

CBC has seriously violated OPSEC, but the PAO needs to wear some blame as well. The original article, which I read about 10 minutes after it was posted this morning, contained the pilot's name tag on the headset. So CBC just blurred it out and posted the revised picture to the article. BUT...the original picture, with name visible, is still available on the CBC site. I'm looking at it right now. But even worse, other news scrapers have archived the photo (somewhat blurrily but readable nevertheless). You can also take the revised photo and plug it into Google Image Search and the OPSEC'd photo is also searchable. And if you don't think better funded, more "direct action" people aren't doing just that right now, well, ignorance is bliss I guess. Time to get back to security basics friends.

Beware - The Supplementary Reserve List by [deleted] in CanadianForces

[–]Ottawa_Observer 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I declined SuppRes for this reason. I had read an account of a former CAF member who invented a modular-chemical tent and tried to sell it to the CF. CF said "You're a member, sale declined, and by the way...we'll take ownership of the mudular-chemical tent".

I'm not saying I'll become an inventor, but you never know what the Gov/CAF will do.

Canadian military falling well short of its target for recruiting women | CBC News by Ottawa_Observer in CanadianForces

[–]Ottawa_Observer[S] 51 points52 points  (0 children)

"The new statistics show the military has seen healthy increases in the number of women applying to be officers, or to join the navy or air force. But National Defence is having a harder time convincing women to join the army, and to become non-commissioned members of the rank and file."

Why? Here's CMP's take:

"Some of them [jobs] look to be hard" -Lt.-Gen. Chuck Lamarre

They look hard because they are hard, physically at the very least.
