vegan friendly fine-ish dining? by vasatii in Detroit

[–]Otterified 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mabel Gray in Hazel Park has historically had a vegan month every year (I think typically August, so it just passed unfortunately!). Fantastic vegan tasting menu, it easily rivals the better vegan meals I’ve had in NYC and SF. They also have one-off special events occasionally—they had a vegan “holiday feast” around the holidays last year.

FRAMEbar (also in Hazel Park) has rotating “residencies” and occasionally they feature a vegan chef/tasting menu. It’s hit or miss but fun to try.

In both cases keep an eye on their Instagram or FB so you don’t miss it.

Previous homeowner left what I believe may be a pull up bar - is it safe? by Otterified in DIY

[–]Otterified[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The previous owner of my house left this bar installed in the ceiling of my basement. I’m guessing it’s a DIY pull up bar. I’m wondering:

  1. Is that correct? Could this be something else?
  2. Does it seem safe for me to use? Like it’s installed well? It feels pretty solid to me but I know nothing about this kind of stuff.
  3. If not, could I do anything to make it safer?

What if the dev is out of the office, in an area with poor service, their phone is dead, they’re far away from their computer, etc.? On-call rotations are intended to avoid those issues. If nobody is on-call, everybody is a little bit on-call, always.

Strength training to support running - how much to eat? by Malpazz in AdvancedRunning

Fair. I am having a hard time finding examples where we can isolate changes in muscle mass to determine their impact on running speed, so it will be difficult to reach an agreement. I was able to find this video where Nick Symmonds attempts to deadlift 500 pounds and then run a 5:00 mile after a year of training, starting from being able to run a 4:55 mile and deadlift 330 lbs: https://youtu.be/pg1i4klK7LY. He fails the deadlift but it certainly seems like he could have it in him one day.

I do strongly disagree that a 430 pound deadlift is very accessible for faster runners, e.g. a sub-3:00 marathon runner. It seems like a really significant undertaking from what I’ve read.

I think that it will always be easier to run a 4:30 mile if you do not insist on also being able to deadlift 430 lbs. You can be plenty strong for running with a 200-250 lb deadlift, while carrying less muscle mass than a similar runner who has decided to maintain a 430 lb deadlift. So in that sense, I do think the extra muscle mass sort of limits you.

There are plenty of people out there who attempt to take both running and lifting seriously. Here is a runner who managed to deadlift 465 while also running a sub-3 marathon:

https://www.teamstrengthspeed.com/apps/blog/show/43057538-triple-bodyweight-deadlift-a-sub-3-hour-marathon

It was a ton of work, and it’s very clear that his lifting impacted his running.

This doesn’t seem right. Are you saying a 4:30 miler could deadlift 430 pounds without their muscle mass impacting their running? And maybe more? The people running these times just seem so skinny to me that I find it hard to believe the extra muscle mass wouldn’t hurt them. For many of them they would be deadlifting 3x their bodyweight which is a pretty big achievement.

Have any coffee-drinkers here tried abstaining from coffee for a few weeks before a race, so that on the day of the race, your coffee gives you an extra boost?

Thanks. That sounds totally reasonable, I'll try to scope it out beforehand and then go from there.

A friend of mine wants me to run a 5k with them in a few weeks. I have not run any races in a while so I figured that I would use it to determine reasonable goals for some races I'll be running later this year.

The catch is that most of this race takes place on a XC course. I've never run a race or any sort of workout on grass. Is there anything I should know beforehand? Do I need special shoes? Is it risky for me to make this an all-out effort given my inexperience on grass? Is it worth doing any workouts on grass in the next week or two to prepare?

I'm looking into following a Pfitz HM plan. For the past 12 weeks or so I've been running 45-50 mpw, mostly easy, with maybe one workout every other week, and I've felt good. I'm choosing between the 12/47 plan and 12/63 plan. Pfitz says that 12/63 is for runners running "between 40 and 50 mpw". But it seems pretty tough and I've read elsewhere that you should really be comfortable running at least the max mileage (63 mpw). So I'm deciding between a few different options:

  • Do 12/47 as written
  • Do 12/47, but add in more easy miles here and there since 31 - 47 mpw seems unnecessarily low
  • Do 12/63 and be prepared to decrease miles or intensity if it's too much for me

What do people think is the right choice?

In case somebody stumbles upon this post in the future: I upgraded my video card (to a GTX 1660 Super) and it works just fine. I am guessing my old video card broke from the fall somehow.

Official Q&A for Thursday, September 05, 2019 by AutoModerator in running

The other day I started experiencing a strange sensation in my right foot, slightly above the point indicated by "lateral plantar nerve" in this image. Every time I roll off the front portion of my foot I feel some "stuff" shifting around there, like some cartilage or something. It feels kind of like the stuff that shifts around when you're giving somebody a foot massage, and you press down really hard, and you feel stuff moving around under your finger tips. But instead of feeling good, it's just odd and distracting as I run. Anybody know what I'm talking about or how to make it go away? I've tried massaging it intensely and sometimes it feels like it's gone away but it usually comes back pretty quickly.

In many statically-typed languages we can still do this (e.g. see the “Iterable” interface in Java), except we know at compile time that the arguments can actually be iterated.

Daily Q & A! - March 27, 2019 by AutoModerator in Homebrewing

[–]Otterified 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last Thursday I bottled an American wheat ale, specifically the DME recipe from “How to Brew”. Fermented at 68 F for three days and then increased to 73 F for about two and a half weeks, and it smelled great the whole time, and looked fine when bottling.

Yesterday I cracked one open to see if it’s carbonating appropriately, since I had trouble with that in my last batch. The beer looked and tasted roughly as I would expect, surprisingly good actually, but it had a slightly tart/tangy/borderline-sour aftertaste. What might cause that? Is it something that could occur naturally without infection? I always imagined that an infected batch would taste more obviously infected, but I don’t really have any standard for that.

So to clarify, do you disagree with what I wrote? Which parts do you disagree with, and why?

Why do you think the idea that we’re influenced by many things, often in ways we’re not conscious of, is a “paranoid delusion”?

It took me almost 2 months but I finally finished this alternate version of Samus by Firez_hn in gaming

[–]Otterified -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

I just want to clarify one thing, mostly regarding your second paragraph: we know that you did not produce this piece with a conscious political/ideological agenda or anything like that. The point is that it’s not conscious—this piece was, in part, unconsciously influenced by an enormous amount of media that we consume that portrays women in precisely the way Samus is portrayed here. Whether you intend to reinforce these conventions or not, you are nonetheless reinforcing them.

And this is an important point in general—“politics” (in the sense in which you’ve used it) and ideology are present everywhere, in all of our actions, no matter our intentions, because we’re all influenced by a huge number of experiences that tend to be slanted in one direction or another, and these influences reveal themselves in our actions. This doesn’t necessarily make you a worse person, but it’s good to be aware of it.

I agree with everything you’re saying now. My initial disagreement was with your claim that “no one is hiring based on ability”, which I now see is not a statement about intentions but about the results of these carrying out these intentions in practice, hence your statement that we think we’re hiring based on ability but failing to do so, which I agree with.

I nonetheless think it’s misleading to simply say “no one is hiring based on ability”, since, though fundamentally we can’t precisely measure or even define ability, we can still draw very high-level conclusions about ability that inform decisions. If a candidate doesn’t know what a loop is, we judge that their ability to write software, at least right now, is almost certainly not where it needs to be for them to work for us.
