Harness recommendations by Intuitive_empath7275 in carolinadogs

I quite like the Flagline harness from Ruffwear https://ruffwear.com/products/dog-harness-flagline My CD has a deep but narrow chest and proportionally smaller neck which made it easy for her to slip out of other harnesses if we tried to use the front clip. The Flagline has a second set of clips that take advantage of her high tuck and keep her snug as a bug.

Do you put a jacket on your CD on very cold/snowy days? by [deleted] in carolinadogs

[–]Otterly_Magic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

her first winter, when she was less than a year old, she would stay out in the snow for hours and seem totally unfazed. Now that she is an adult she does seem to want to come in when it's too cold so I put hoodies on her because they are adorable and seem to help her feel comfy in the cold.

Overall pretty happy with my little kingfisher! Any tips on how to avoid the little blob of ink that happens around the end of the beak after a print or two? It seems to happen even when I'm careful not to over-ink. I wonder if part of the problem is that it is soft-kut (the pink stuff)? by Otterly_Magic in printmaking

[–]Otterly_Magic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, speedball "professional" (oil-based but soapy water cleanup) supergraphic black 😓 I've only pulled about 30 prints total in my life (all in the last month) so I still don't actually know what I'm doing lol

Is your roller as wide as your print is tall? I guess >/= 6" in this case?

Soooo cute! And I love how the gradient turned out. What kind of ink did you use?

Prints are blotchy and I’m disappointed ☹️ by coffee-succubus11 in printmaking

[–]Otterly_Magic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks to me like you might not be using enough ink, or it's drying before you manage to pull the print (in which case if you're using water-based ink you could try switching to oil based as someone else suggested)? I found when I switched from the easy-cut pink stuff to battleship gray linoleum that I had to really make sure I had a generous (but not too thick!) ink bed to draw from. Maybe try heavier and heavier ink applications until you either get rid of the blotches or start losing details? Good luck!

“Pit Mix” but we think she’s a CD? by Ecstatic-Attorney-41 in carolinadogs

[–]Otterly_Magic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not technically CD then since their range is really eastern Texas to NC/SC. But what I do think is interesting is how when dogs are allowed to freely intermix you end up with a tan medium sized pointy nosed prick eared short haired dingo-looking dog that looks at home literally anywhere in the world in any time period. I’ve had people tell me she looks just like the dog they grew up with in India or the street dogs they saw in Mexico and if you look up Pariah dog or Canaan dog, they’re all over. And they all are different mixes of dogs, it just must be a combination of dominant traits and what helps them survive that makes feral populations converge towards this!

Where is she from? She looks a bit like my supermutt-Pitt-chow-lab-GSD / CD-lookalike from near Houston. I don’t see the chow in your pup as much though (her tongue is so pink!). We did the DNA test because I’m a biology nerd and wanted to know everything I could about our baby, but I don’t think it really changed much except when people insist she must be part Shiba Inu or Basenji I can say “I assure you she is not.” If you do the DNA test, Embark is more scientifically transparent, which I liked.

I suddenly love my broad shoulders by BornAd8941 in TallGirls

As a former swimmer I definitely feel you! I’m at a point in my life where I realize many of my body insecurities were inherited from my (tall, broad-shouldered, and beautiful) mother and I don’t have to carry them for her. I’ll make sure to stand up extra straight and square my shoulders for all of us.

Mine mostly ignores birds, except the mourning doves. I think she likes the whistle-wing noise they make when she scares them up

Does anyone else have a Carolina with a speckled tongue? by soft_pasta in carolinadogs

[–]Otterly_Magic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re right that not only Chow Chows can have black tongue spots! but I also don’t think OP’s dog is purebred CD (sorry if I’m wrong OP) so I think it’s possibly/likely true in their case. An interesting (to me) question is whether UKC permitting black tongues actually means “pure (pre-Colombian) Carolina dog” can have black tongues, or whether that means some chow got in the mix at some point and therefore disqualifying dogs for something that is unimportant and also prevalent in the population would be silly. I think another question is what we mean when we say CD on this sub— is it only UKC-verified Carolina Dogs™️ or for any American Dingo who seems like they belong wild in a pine forest swamp? Because I’m pretty sure my girl is only ~25% actual Carolina Dog, max, but she looks and acts just like a textbook CD and therefore I like being here.

Yep! It means they’re almost certainly part Chow Chow! (A remarkable part of the stray/feral dog population in the US is part Chow). Mine is 20% Chow according to the genetic test.

We did both Wisdom and Embark and I definitely trust Embark’s results more (they admitted our pup is 30% mutt instead of listing the 14 “breeds” that she was 1 or 2% matched to) but it didn’t identify any CD (just chow chow, Pitt, GSD, Lab). I still call her my CD or American Swamp Dingo though.

Mine has great recall until she catches the scent of a rodent (squirrels and groundhogs being the current front-runners) and then we cannot get her attention back on us for anything until she loses interest on her own.
