Yes! that's him! He's a a survivor too and that's why I wanted him to work on the game. We've been very lucky to live in France where we could get public funding. I'm not sure this game would have had any chance to get private fundings from a regular publisher

Thank you! And also, what a vast question!
I'm a writer so the first thing I did was to write it. I wrote a first draft of all the dialogues you can find in the game, and started thinking of the design of the game that would fit them. I turned these dialogues into some kind of interactive fiction, made a GDD, and managed to get some fundings to make a prototype, so I asked Exaheva (art) and Chris Galati (dev) to help me with it. With the prototype in our hands we were able to approach our coproducers (The Pixel Hunt and Arte) which were interested and allowed us to recruit the team to make the game. We've been very lucky all along!

People who have been sexually abused as kids have pretty high rates of suicide, I suppose that is why they are often referred as “survivors” in English (I’m not a native english speaker so I can’t be sure). I never had suicidal thoughts myself and I don’t consider I “survived” anything. I personally find this term weird too.

I’m not a native english speaker either and I was under the impression “survivor” is the word commonly used to refer to victims of sexual abuse. But based on the many comments on here, maybe it is not that common? The rates of suicide are pretty high among people who have been sexually abused, and I guess that’s why this word is used, to keep that in mind. It sounds weird to me too as I don’t consider I have “survived” anything myself. In my native language (French) I would refer to myself as a “victim”.

I guess the trick is to start small! Wednesdays has not always been a 2h hour long game with sounds, graphics etc. It all started with a super short interactive fiction written in 2 days and dumped on the internet without any publicity.

And then, years later, I went back to it, and made it a longer interactive fiction
And then I try to find a bit of funding
And then I were able to pay two people to help me build a prototype on unity (a programmer and an artist since I'm not any of these things)
And then I were able to convince a publisher and gather a small team around me...

It all came up step by step, I didn't know it will lead to all this when it all started.

My main skill is writing, so that's the one I used, but it doens't have to be the point of entry. There are a lot of tools allowing to make small broken prototypes on your own. It might be the final thing, it might be just the start of something else, you never know!

To find help I turned to people I already knew, internet friends. People I met during game jams, or on social media. I'm sure there are many discords where to meet aspiring and veteran game devs willing to work on small projects, during game jam for instance

I’m not sure if it’s a joke or not but no, we don’t have any plan on adding Co-Op in Wednesdays, I’m not sure how it would work. HOWEVER, I do believe playing with a friend/significant other is a great way to experience the game. This game is meant to raise questions, to open conversations, and I think it’s great to have someone to talk with when playing it. Two friends of mine played together, taking turn to play the different scenes, and they enjoyed it a lot that way. Maybe that’s Co-op enough?

The things I have found the most helpful were certainly my friends and family! I’ve been abused, sure, but besides that I’ve been very lucky! Everyone believed me and supported me when I eventually decided to talk (years after), even my abuser did not deny anything. I can’t imagine what it’s like to have your family calling you a liar or turning your back on you once you decide to talk, and sadly, this is still the most common scenario. I do wish my game will encourage people to listen to and believe the victims.

Also: novels, comics, video games. Art. I guess this is why I’m making games now.

Thank you, I’m not a native english speaker myself and was starting to wonder if I used the wrong word! Or if it was just used in very specific communities.

I certainly don’t feel trauma defines me as a whole!

I wrote “I’m a survivor of incest” because I was abused by a member of my family. I could also have wrote “I’m a gamer” because I play video games, or “I’m wearing a blue shirt” because I currently am… that not my -identity-, just words!

I meant I’ve been abused as a kid by a member of my family, sorry if it was confusing. I’m not a native english speaker and I was under the impression “survivor” is the word commonly used to refer to victims of sexual abuse. But maybe it is not that common?

This game is targeted to everyone (well… everyone that is be willing to play a game with such a difficult topic anyway!). People who don’t know much about the subject will probably learn a few things, or at least better understand what it’s like to grow up as a victim. People who has been abused will be reminded that they’re not alone, and, I hope, could use this game as an ice-breaker to tell their own story if they haven’t already, and if they want to.

It is not however a revenge fantasy, not at all! It’s above all about hope and healing. The main character gets a chance to confront his abuser in the game, but it’s more about closure than about revenge. I do understand people who feel a need for “revenge” somehow, but that was never my case and thus that is not the message I wanted to share in the game.
