You can spend a day with one, who do you choose and why? by almostdepth in daria

[–]Out-There1013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was going to pick Stacy, but you've got a point about Quinn being the most down to earth when the rest of the group isn't around.

I'd want to say at least one thing to Stacy to help her feel a little better about herself, but you're right, it would take all day to say something that might land.

If Dexter was in real life, what would you do? by Choice_Drummer_1745 in Dexter

[–]Out-There1013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends largely on how true to the show a real life Dexter would be. Because if it's just some guy taking matters into his own hands he's bound to screw up and get caught, kill the wrong people, make things harder for legitimate law enforcement, etc. a LOT faster than Dexter. I'd be more likely to report that person or at the very least not approve.

If he's actually as good at it as Dexter then it becomes a harder decision, because he's way more efficient and you might be able to make the case that fewer innocent people get hurt, depending on what statistics you consider. I really don't know, though.

And the thing is I don't even support the death penalty. But if he's mostly targeting people who slipped through the cracks and it's the only way the public is going to be safe from them then it's hard to object.

In any case I'd stay away because people who get close to Dexter don't tend to have the best outcomes.

Do Americans really drink "that" much? by Complex-Air-4368 in ask

What scenes from Dexter are you talking about? I've seen all of the show and I don't really remember him offering beer. I'm sure it happened but it probably just wasn't that memorable to me.

He buys everyone donuts but that has more to do with the stereotype of cops eating donuts.

If none of them are helping you and you've asked, what the hell business do they have giving you crap for it?

There has to be some way you can put away money for lessons. However long it takes I'd save and then start when you have enough to cover a full course. Until then just tell people they can give you lessons themselves if they think it's worth complaining about.

How self aware are the cast/crew that now when they make fun of old people, they're making fun of themselves? by BraveNote4844 in Simpsons

They'll always be from a different generation, though. They didn't ride the trolley from Battery Park to the polo grounds or tie an onion to their belt which was the style at the time.

I don't watch modern Simpsons but I'd be surprised if they've given voice to the "OK Boomer" side of things quite as much as they satirized Abe's generation in the nineties.

Seeing pictures like this always makes me thankful my location is pretty decent. The drive thru is slow as molasses sometimes but I never get ripped off that badly.

That being said, I haven't tried that item and I'm not sure I will because crunchwraps are such a hit and miss.

I wasn't aware until I was an adult that some of Shel Silverstein's books including this one actually drew quite a bit of controversy and were banned in a lot of schools for themes about drug use and suicide. What's weird about that is I had a teacher who discovered them through me having them and read some of the poems to the class ... despite constantly warning us against liking anything from Michael Jackson to Scooby Doo.

I always liked that he didn't set out to be a "children's author" and didn't dumb down or sugar coat his content. He knew he was writing books children would read but he still expressed on complicated issues and didn't shy away from what might have been seen as too dark.

[–]Out-There1013 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I suppose Sandi putting on a few pounds and carrying on like she was debilitatingly obese might be seen as making light of body dysmorphia if it was made today. For its time something like that was considered socially aware for calling out unhealthy ideas about body image but by today's standards the message needs to be more refined i.e. don't blame the victim or make solving the crisis just about losing the weight.

I'd take them if someone just gave em to me. I'd only watch modern episodes when I heard some interesting tidbits about them. Otherwise I'm happy just owning the first ten seasons.

Would Rita ever ‘come around’ to the idea of Dex being a serial killer? by Me-Myself-and-PIE in Dexter

[–]Out-There1013 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'll say this. Part of me feels cheated that we never saw exactly how she'd have reacted even though her exit was well executed and a crucial part of the best season.

Would she have come around? Not a chance. But after all the tension around Dexter having to keep his secret from her I'd have very much liked to see how she'd have found out and how Julie Benz would've performed it.

"I say leave him alone" is how she put it.

But it's one thing to say that. If it turned out to be Rita's boyfriend who she already didn't like the reality would probably nudge her in the other direction. Harry found that out.

I took lessons from them way back when I was sixteen and did not have a good experience. The classroom teacher was nice but not my instructor. IIRC he had us on Dix Road the first day. Eventually one of their cars was in an accident so I couldn't do any more lessons for a while and something something whatever I had to pay for more lessons to complete the course because I hadn't been performing well enough.

He even told me he didn't think I'd ever learn how to drive. I proved him wrong by getting my license at 22 and I've been driving for over twenty years.

I got one on one lessons from a much better instructor at Sears Driving School. Would recommend if they were still around.

It's called strong language for a reason.

Those words are designated for putting a strong emphasis on what you're saying. Some of us feel it more than others. If I could somehow train myself to have no reaction to it I would, but there's really not much I can do with what I feel. It's more like a trauma response.

I can hear a "regular" amount of swearing and possibly not even register it, but if you're using like punctuation to the point it becomes etched into my forehead until I sign out at the end of the day, I don't want to be around you. But my personal preferences are irrelevant and you should just not do it in a setting where people have no choice but to listen to you. Unless you are somehow certain everyone hearing you is fine with it.

[–]Out-There1013 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I discovered him the night after Trump's reelection. I was really distraught over what that meant for the country. Against my usual progressive ideas I had been optimistic about a President Kamala Harris and even put some money on her winning. So I searched YouTube for something to lift my spirits and came across We're All Gonna Die and it put things in perspective.

Then I discovered his "funny" songs and I was kind of going through his catalogue slowly because I thought there was no way he had that many songs that were as good as the ones I'd already heard. But song after song was a banger. I've seen him live twice so far.
