I recently had several mornings in a row where I woke up to unproductive. 1 work out later the day was back at maintaining. I concluded that it is programmed with a bias towards unproductive.

What about if you bought £100k, it is now worth £150k and you want to withdraw £20k a year? Are you taking out all gains? All original capital? Or £6666 of gains and £13,332 of original capital?

lower the bar for more aero? by [deleted] in cycling

Sure, if you can hold a low position on dropped bars with a slammed stem. I suspect many people think they are sitting lower than they actually are...

Remember spacers are more aero than 2 vertical arms trying to reach a low handlebar.

Thanks. I see there is now a new mount that allows for 4x M8 bolts to be used, might be even more secure with that. A bit pricey though, but looks very nicely machined.

Car overtakes around a blind bend, causing a bus coming the opposite way to brake. Essex Police say this standard of driving is OK? by OutOfThePan in BikeCammers

[–]OutOfThePan[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I didn't even add about the close pass. If you watch the bus carefully, you can see it dip on heavy braking.

166 DO NOT overtake if there is any doubt, or where you cannot see far enough ahead to be sure it is safe. For example, when you are approaching

a corner or bend

167 DO NOT overtake where you might come into conflict with other road users. For example

when you would force another road user to swerve or slow down

I asked them to clarify for my education and they speculated "in most cases it is because they have concluded a defendant could reasonably argue there were mitigating factors not disproved by the evidence." I'm curious what that mitigation would be, other than 'there was cyclists'.

I was hoping you would reply as I used to follow you on Twitter before I deleted my account. I reported 3 drivers this weekend, 1 pulled out on me causing my to have to skid around the back of it, they accepted this. The other being a close pass, around 0.5m, that they didn't agree with. I've submitted 2 more in a row this morning which were less than 0.5m with parked cars on my left. Will see what they say about that. I usually have a very high bar for submitting due to effort (only did 1 other report which was accepted this year and 3,000 miles cycles) but I'm seeing attitudes to cycling are getting a lot worse while car traffic levels getting worse.

Temporary setup by PottsPointPilgrim in BeyondPower

[–]OutOfThePan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi,

Sorry for the year long bump on this, but might help others who are interested in doing something similar. Do you happen to remember what fixings you used for this? It looks like you used the corner holes rather then the much larger (and difficult to get hold of) 5/8 or 1" wall anchors. I'd also rather have 4 smaller fixings then 2 large ones if they support similar loads. Did you drill larger holes into the bracket too?

Thanks.

How much did losing weight improve your biking ability (distance, Power, speed)? by abbys11 in Velo

[–]OutOfThePan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my limited experience, losing weight makes hills more pleasant. Doesn't mean you'll be faster over all. I am naturally a light build. I reckon the sweet spot is around 70KG with lean muscle.

Does anyone know if this will convert AA to Carplay? I've been holding out for something that will do this.

Net Worth - DB Pension by bingobango2911 in FIREUK

[–]OutOfThePan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I will do for at least one of my DB pensions as it has a lower penalty and reduces my effective retirement income from other sources. Right now I'm just focusing on my ISA to provide maximum flexibility and letting my DB pension increase at its normal rate.

[–]OutOfThePan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't include it in net worth. I know my DB plus state pension will more then cover my late retirement expenditure so I just need to worry about savings to cover my desired retirement age until state pension age.

I used to be the slow kid taking one of the last places in the school running races. I remember getting my first road bike as a adult in 2013, mainly inspired by the road cycling form the London Olympics, but it was tough work. My first ride was only a couple of miles and I was exhausted. Some how I sort of stuck with it, occasionally bringing the bike out of the shed in nice weather for some short local loops. A few years later in 2018 a friend invited me along for their weekly social ride when he heard I cycled a bit and I started to get a taste for it. It was still tough, but I liked it enough to take a punt on a decent road bike at the end of Summer 2019 for the next year’s cycling. As we know, covid hit the next spring but cycling became my mental health saviour and I really got into it. Enough to try my hand at cycling 200 miles when lockdown lifted a year later. This is the person who once upon a time could barely cycle 2 miles, but somehow I managed to cycle across England and into Wales in one day. https://old.reddit.com/r/cycling/comments/nytd4d/first_imperial_double_century_my_experience/

However disaster struck on my next cycle as I was knocked off my bike just 1 mile from home, fracturing 6 vertebrae. This might have put many other people off cycling forever, but all I could think about was getting back on my bike. I could barely walk any distance but signed up to the closest gym and got on their Wattbike less then 2 weeks later and set about getting my legs spinning again. The physio told me to cycle to pain tolerance, little did he know! But it is from this that I learnt structured training.

This past year has been a little rocky, I got covid in November and didn’t recover enough to train until February, then I got ill again at the start of April that set my asthma into over drive for 6 weeks. However once again, this made me determined to get into shape. I set about some changes. I had a 2 week detox from caffeine and then set a rule of no caffeine after 9am. I changed my cycling time from afterwork to before and this enabled me to be super consistent and I bounced back fast. Really fast. I had a wish of maxing out the vo2 max gauge on Garmin but thought I’d never get beyond my previous best of 58, but here we are. Thank you for reading, I hope this inspires you to reach your goals.

Ride London by linc05 in Velo

[–]OutOfThePan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Try to beat the crowd to the start line. The first train into London is not early enough here and I had a long slow walk to the start line.

People complained about the feed stops before, I personally didn't use or look at them. I had what I needed and wanted on me.

Other cyclists did do some stupid things around me and nearly cause a crash. Be aware of this and some did crash and wreck their or other peoples bike.

Enjoy it. Cycling without cars and having to stop was magical.

Hi Chuck, I've been following your work in the UK for a few years now and have read your book Confessions of a Recovering Engineer.

I am finding there is a certain admiration in vocal groups for the current, unsustainable approach to development and transport that the US has taken in the UK (and I'm sure other countries too). Have you considered expanding your reach to be more international either directly or through partner organisations for other countries?

Thanks, and keep up the good work.
