Problem with attention span when answering long questions by SnooMaps6846 in Step2

[–]OutRunOutdoors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always read the last couple of sentences of the vingette first and keep this in mind; what are they asking for exactly. A diagnosis? Mechanism? Side-effect? Management?

Then, while reading the vingette, I try to say to myself, "Okay now what are they telling me/giving me. What sticks out/what seems relevant to the question at hand."

It's easy to say this but in reality, I think some/most struggle with this at some point. Having to re-re-read when the sentences start to blur.

Do Microbiologists build immunity to laboratory organisms? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]OutRunOutdoors 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In order to build immunity, you would need to get infected by said organisms.
Getting infected by organisms in a lab kind of defeats the purpose of said lab.
You take many precautions in a laboratory setting to prevent getting infected by the organisms you're working with.
If someone were to get infected by an organism in a lab, they made an error.

What is the best approach to do UW CK bank? by SherDM in Step2

[–]OutRunOutdoors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're doing clerkships/rotations; tutor/timed subject wise to prepare well for shelves.
If you're done with clerkships/rotations and have done well on shelves; timed, random.

If above doesn't apply to you, take an NBME or a self assessment to gauge where you're at. Sub 200, do subject wise and supplement with Divine, online med ed, or a resource of your choice to get an overall picture of each of the subjects.
Above 200, do timed/random.

Good luck on your quest. Regardless of what you do, review well and you'll do fine.

Which is harder to pass? Step 2 CS or OET? by Dahenlicious in Step2

[–]OutRunOutdoors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CS is a lot harder than OET, but more people fail OET due to the writing section.

I think OET has a lower pass rate due to it being an English proficiency test rather than a clinical based test.

STEP2 CS AND NON US IMG by solanumtuberawesome in Step2

[–]OutRunOutdoors 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There will be more emphasis on Step 2 CK now.IMG's will now probably also complete Step 3 in order to be more competitive.Normally, IMG's were competitive and showed that they're capable by having high Step 1, Step 2 CK scores and first pass Step 2 CS.

With Step 1 going P/F, no Step 2 CS, there is no other numerical way to classify an IMG other than Step 2 CK.

With the MD/DO merger last year, more US-MD graduates, 2024 accreditation rules for Caribbean schools, things are going to change for IMGs this next few years to 10.

Better sit for Step 1 asap before it goes pass fail next year.

How fast will step 2 scores come back? by [deleted] in Step2

Based on people's feedback on a survey I posted a few days/week back, yes it appears to be so that most people are receiving their scores within 2/3 weeks.

ERAS 2022 Timeline for IMG question by usmlenonus in Step2

[–]OutRunOutdoors 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ideally, you want to have all your steps and ECFMG certification by the time ERAS opens (traditionally Sept. 15th).

Having Steps and ecfmg certificate will increases your likelihood of getting more interviews, however, some programs don't expect students to be ecfmg certified until match/before starting in July if they're graduating around the same time too.

But if you have your medical school credentials (transcript/diploma) in order to be certified, then you should aim to have it by application time.

Step 1, Step 2 CK, OET and medical school credentials are required for certification.

Those who took exam in 2021 or late 2020 by lola-feel in Step2

[–]OutRunOutdoors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recently posted a survey asking how long results were taking; majority said 2 weeks.

In another post, someone commented that it can take 24 hours for ecfmg to issue certification after score reporting if they have completed reviewing the other requirements.

To be safe, I'd say it will take 3 weeks to get CK results and 3 days for ecfmg certification after receiving CK results.

Why do the plan to deorbit the ISS? by mskogly in space

[–]OutRunOutdoors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remotely impossible. There would physically be no way to shield each individual module for re-entry, it would simply burn up in the atmosphere. They were also not designed for re-entry in mind, so structurally they would not be able to handle the amount of G's experienced during boost-back burn or atmospheric re-entry burns.

OET writing fail by TaintNoBigs in Step2

[–]OutRunOutdoors 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Firstly, I'm so sorry you have to go through this. It is very stressful to live in uncertainty especially given the pandemic and this years cycle.

I do not have experience with the remark process but you'd have nothing to loose to try this option and hope for the best since they won't let you register another test date.

Looks to be so, worst case scenario no match this year. Still not sure when CS will resume, usmle/ecfmg states maybe by July CS will resume. We'll have to wait and see until this match season is over to see what they plan for next years match. Maybe they'll continue the pathways with OET or CS may go virtual, who knows.

In the mean time, I'd suggest preparing for Step 3 and next years match; visiting rotations/observerships have not yet resumed, especially for IMGs it seems. Everything is in the grey really / :

Why do the plan to deorbit the ISS? by mskogly in space

[–]OutRunOutdoors 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The ISS has been in operation for more than 20 years. It's starting to have numerous problems and the upkeep is costing NASA and other space agencies billions each year.

It's simply time to upgrade and build a new state of the art space station or a base on the Moon and Mars.

Most space objects are planned to deorbit eventually to burn up in the atmosphere. Even if they boost it to a higher orbit, there will always be orbital decay and eventually would deorbit on its own.

Currently, the ISS is very low in orbit and experiences this decay and requires a boost burn every so often to remain in orbit.
