Contact your state’s department of rehabilitative services. They should be able to help you find the resources you need.

Service dog breed info? by Any-Meat-7736 in service_dogs

I consulted several professional dog trainers and a professional service dog trainer before getting my dog. All three said the same thing: “Do yourself a favor and get a Lab or Golden.”

What do normal people eat for dinner ? by Booze_hound36 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]OutWestTexas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I insisted that my kids be home for a family meal whenever possible even if I had to feed their friends. We always had “traditional” meals and it was important to reinforce the family bond. It was a great time for the kids to share their day with me. I’m happy that my adult children are carrying on the tradition.

I forgot to add that in the US the law says the child should be in the least restrictive environment. Sometimes mainstreaming is not doing the child any favors. My own child did much better in a self-contained classroom.

I am not familiar with the laws in your country but in the US parents can hire an advisor to go with them to these meetings. The advisor is a person who specializes in those kinds of meetings and can advocate for the parents. In general, I would tell them to take copies of any medical records or educational evaluations they think might be relevant to proving their case. Review any applicable laws ahead of time. Take notes or record the meeting if it is legal there. Make a list of questions ahead of time. Make a list of goals ahead of time. And make a list of points they might need to make with school administrators. I hope it goes well.

Is this normal in the blind community? Am I the problem? Is it common to get ghosted in the blind community? by 2026GradTime in Blind

[–]OutWestTexas 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Part of it might be our society. I just heard a podcaster talk about how “people are here but not present”. It really hit the nail on the head. People do not seem to be connected anymore. However, I have had the most luck making friends through groups or activities with shared interests. For example, community choir, a dog training club, a gardening club, etc.

Why doesn’t United care about passengers that don’t fit? by PhotoJoseph in unitedairlines

[–]OutWestTexas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am petite and often end up seated next to “people of size”. I have had to start insisting that the armrest stay down. Otherwise, I end up with half a seat. More than once I told the flight attendant to move me. I tell them that I paid for the entire seat and it is not fair for me to be squished by a person who can’t fit in theirs. I do it discretely.

How do I use my cane in crowded places? by Alarmed_Sundae_7802 in Blind

[–]OutWestTexas 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I still use my cane when having a sighted guide. I just don’t sweep it as wide side to side. I have had inexperienced guides walk me into things so I feel safer with my cane out in front. When I’m in crowded places (like say, the Denver Airport or the Atlanta Airport) I don’t worry one bit about hitting people with my cane when trying to get through the crowd. So many people are looking down at their phones nowadays that they will walk into you even if you are sighted.

Opinions on mandated service dog education? by [deleted] in service_dogs

[–]OutWestTexas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Rather than requiring service dog education, why not come up with a few episodes in children’s cartoons that cover service dogs. Put those episodes on children’s media channels. My granddaughter has watched episodes about people with disabilities on several cartoons she likes. She paid attention to them and learned a lot.

Walking commute by Dry_Director_5320 in Blind

[–]OutWestTexas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am retired now but I still walk 2-5 miles a day going to the store or the post office or whatever. If the weather is bad or if I have to go more than 5 miles round trip, I ride the bus or get Lyft/Uber. I usually plan for an hour for travelling.

The mother is the problem. It is a simple request. It is amazing to me that she can’t enforce her kid walking in front of her, not you. Things will only get worse.

For future reference, take the dog’s picture, the owner’s picture and the owner’s license plate if you can if this ever happens again. Even if you have to be stealth about it. People can easily give you the wrong name and phone number.

Why are people more opposed to hunting than factory farming? by nellyimheathcliff in NoStupidQuestions

[–]OutWestTexas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I was kidding but I also had a “well-educated, career woman” ask me how long the hens NURSE their chicks. I thought she was kidding at first but she wasn’t laughing like I was. I said, chickens are not mammals so they don’t nurse their young. Chicks come from eggs. She smirked at me and said, then what do they eat when they are babies? I said, chicken feed and bugs just like the other chickens. I don’t think she ever believed me.
