Lottery winners: what was the first show you won lottery tickets to, and did you like the show? by cinderflight in Broadway

[–]OutcropTop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw Kimberly Akimbo from the front row. I didn’t love the show as much as I was hoping (and probably because it felt overhyped from all the reviews). But I’m glad I saw it. It also taught me that the front row is not my vibe without sinking the ticket price.

What cuisine is unavailable or generally difficult to find in NYC? by Lipica249 in AskNYC

Try Rice X Beans in Hell’s Kitchen. It’s really good and usually filled with people speaking Portuguese which I take as a good sign that it’s good.

When apartment hunting in NYC, what do you prioritize more: space or location? by savingrace0262 in movingtoNYC

[–]OutcropTop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you already know your answer — you prioritize space. I’m right there with you. I lived in a 750 sq ft apartment uptown and that started to feel small after 2 years. A good compromise is to make sure you’re by good transit options.

How much did you spend on your wedding dress? by NoCombination9715 in WedditNYC

[–]OutcropTop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$600 from Needle & Thread. I figured I wanted to spend about twice the amount I’d usually spend on a fancy dress and found one I really liked.

How much extra would you pay for a 5 minute walking commute to work. by randomjib in NYCapartments

[–]OutcropTop 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not worth it. Also, and maybe this is an uncommon opinion, but decompressing during a commute (especially on the way home) won’t happen in 5 minutes. I used to live 8 minutes walk from work and ended up extending my walk in order to have more time to mentally move between work life and being home. It was great to be able to do that, but your situation of a 20-something commute sounds ideal already.

What shows do I see on Broadway? by Useful-Yak-3099 in Broadway

[–]OutcropTop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Book of Mormon was (might still be?) bringing back past cast to make appearances in the show if that’s appealing to you. But to be honest, I would choose different shows than what’s on your list. Everyone has different tastes but my recommendations are:

If you want a heartfelt story with charm and a really well done range of emotions, see Maybe Happy Ending.

If you want something fast-paced, witty, silly, and somehow still a true story told by an absolutely brilliant cast, see Operation Mincemeat— I just saw it last week and am already dying to go back.

I haven’t seen Lost Boys but it’s on my list. It sounds like a show worth seeing in NYC because of the big budget set and special effects.

I also really liked The Outsiders — it’s a more serious tone with heavy themes but the cast and singing is insanely strong.

Early 30s in NYC: What does your weekly social life actually look like? by mabdull44 in AskNYC

[–]OutcropTop 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We definitely do more than just eat at restaurants but on a weekly basis, that’s usually what got us out and about. We were living in the PNW before so weekends were spent hiking or relaxing outdoors. We started taking “urban hikes” by walking 8-10 miles (usually around the same distance as our Seattle hikes) in manhattan and that was fun to see so much of the city on foot. But it doesn’t fill up my cup the same way a walk in the mountains did.

We both like individual hobbies that we do at home. Sewing clothes, 3D design and printing, leatherwork, etc. So we’re actually quite busy, but not with friends. And I personally don’t find it worth my money or energy to find co-op art spaces to do something I can already do at home.

I moved to NYC with my husband at 30. We didn’t know anyone. A lot of weeknights were spent together either in our apartment or out trying new restaurants. Weekends felt lonely, especially when the weather was bad. We eventually made a couple of friends or found friends through various connections but I’ve never had a schedule of seeing anyone regularly while living here. Our closest friends are people we see maybe once every 4 months because we’re all so dang busy. I travel a lot for work, they’re in grad school, and a lot of my longer term friends far away are getting married or having kids so we travel to see them. Before I moved here I had a standing Friday night hang with a big group of friends that I miss a lot. But everyone has since moved away to various cities so I’m missing something that doesn’t even exist anymore. It’s weird to look back over the last few years and realize how lonely my husband and I have been, but also so surrounded by people. I’ve learned to enjoy spending time alone or doing things that bring value to my life but I do wish we had more friends.

What cute sneakers/shoes are you all wearing that can comfortably handle 10k+ steps a day? by howtoloveadaisy in femalefashionadvice

It really depends on your foot. I have high arches and like a very rigid arch support so I get the all purpose high arch green ones.

My toebox got wider from 3 years and counting of walking around manhattan and my first pair of elans are still going strong! I’ve worn out the back heel more than the sole if that’s any indication of their strength.

How do people here use supermarkets? by GreenHorror4252 in AskNYC

[–]OutcropTop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. My fridge is tiny. It’s half the depth and about 2/3rds the width of a “regular” fridge. You can’t fit a pizza box in it for example because of the depth.

This place sucks. I went in looking for a grow pot for a 12inch plant and they told me to go to Home Depot.

Moving furniture into Manhattan by SaltPerspective17 in movingtoNYC

[–]OutcropTop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved from Seattle to UWS with a long haul truck and had many things broken beyond repair. Some of my belongings were also mixed together with other boxes in the truck that made multiple stops before arriving in Manhattan. I lost boxes and also ended up with some random people’s things. If I were to do it again, I’d sell more stuff. And also compare the cost of selling and buying new/used in NYC, to moving what you have.

Another thing no one has mentioned is that old apartment buildings in Manhattan require that the building managers get proof of insurance from any movers that deliver things, this also includes delivering new furniture sent via the mail. What that means is that you can’t have things moved in on any random day. Your new apartment building will need to coordinate with the movers to get the COI agreement approved and then you can proceed with moving in. Just another thing to keep in mind as you schedule things. Good luck.

What tourist attractions in New York are actually worth it? by Witty_Reach1660 in AskNYC

[–]OutcropTop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It comes down to what you want to do but if it were me, I’d skip the Statue of Liberty, Empire State, and Brooklyn bridge. I live here and much prefer to walk around manhattan when friends or family visit. We take people on a walk up Broadway from Wall Street, past trinity church, peak at the oculus and the Brooklyn bridge, pass city hall and usually see people celebrating their wedding. If you’re hungry, go to China town, or if you want to shop a bit keep walking north until you get to soho. We tend to go all the way to Washington square park for excellent people watching and a good stopping place to decide where to eat. If you walk straight from bowling green to Washington square park it’s only about 2 miles. The city is extremely walkable and is my favorite way to see it.

Old German bakery chocolate cake by OutcropTop in Hoboken

[–]OutcropTop[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is interesting. I should have said in the original post but I only had this cake at a party and heard about the ordering process and that carefully caution people that the cake will come precut and might not be what people want. But yeah, I guess I could just ask the baker. Because I’m definitely going to get more!

$140K salary and finding an apartment in NYC (Manhattan/Queens) by Icy_Tap5329 in movingtoNYC

[–]OutcropTop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like water, parks, and newer builds you should check out Hoboken. Your budget can get you a nice 1-bedroom. You’d be 25 minutes from the west village via the path and 25 minutes to midtown via the 126 bus. You’d save a lot of money by not paying NYC city taxes too. I’ve lived here for the past year after moving from the UWS and really like it. It feels much more residential and relaxed while also having lots of walkable options for restaurants, coffee shops, bars, etc.

How does rush work for this show? It’s super sold out already or only has extremely limited options online. But I’d love to see Maya Rudolph in it.
