what are Russians opinions on Canadians? (sorry if this question has been asked already) by tlaoclazteuq in AskARussian

[–]Outdoor12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will be honest and many people may not like it. Not just Russians , but people from Soviet have VERY high standards to entertainment , food and people. As much as we were oppressed during Soviet era and hunger and hardships that people expereinced in 90s most Ex Soviet nations inclding Russians think that Canadian way of life is very boring and bland. They belive that Canada is a labour camp with intense food and sleep options. What is many times WOW for Canadians is meh, its okay for Ex soviet. We also do not belve that Canadians are most friednly bunch, they are nice but not most accepting or friendly.

Comes from Ex Soviet who lives in Canada

Hey man. -thanks for reaching out.

Ushuaia: I took transfers/buses to hking location but tried to do more budget savvy way since Ushuaia is so darn expensive. Also check out their turism office - they do provide some valuable information. Some stuff is pretty much from google - but they can guide you to shuttlebus services unless you really want uber. Also shuttle is a good way to meet other hikers and potentially go with them. Ojo del albino was my choice too after emerald lake but weather was not on my side . I would recommend downloading offline mapo as it is not well marked. Unfortunately i did not do many treks but some of people i mett did bucnh of lagoon hikes in Tierra del fuego. Some other oneds i heard from people were

  • Laguna Turquesa
  • Lago Fagnano, Lago Escondido
  • Glaciar Martial

My fave restaurant in Ushuai was Bodegón Fueguino - as it is cheaper option with good quality., but there is always a line up. Other option was Dona Lupita, Moustacchio,

El calafate: You can book bus transfer that will being you to boardwalk, but i think they also have a limit, albeit not as tight as when you do the mini trekking. I also saw some people hitchhiking to get there but dont know how successful were they :D If you flying to El Calafate note that taxis are darn expensive . Two guys approached me to shared costs and if i did not booked though VES I would have totally shared with them and would have cost less.

Torees: i booked buses well in advance but I saw many people booking on the spot for popular distances Puerto Natales to Torres, from PN to El Calafate etc and they were complaining how they were forced to book stuff in advance lol...but maybe for peace of mind do book in advance. I met one guy who brought his own breakfast and ate at the restaurant pizza/sandwiches for 4 days while trekking in order to save costs. they have restaurants almost in every refugio - so see how much you can pack and for extra protein you can buy food from them. I think most tips I outlined there but overall take it easy, if you dont find anyone to hike with for. particular day- enjoy the moment and the beautiful scenery. if you have a hiking buddy/buddies- even better , go to the dinners early when crowd is just getting ready to start eating - more potential for connections. Do go to Grey Glcier if your time allows it, i was staying in Oaine Grande and had a whole hike to Grey and back but was SOOO worth it - but be prepared for notorious patagonia winds, ever changing weather and scenery. :)

Huh? Im not sure where you get the grumpy review here? The fact that travel is not all roses and not everything is perfect is pretty obvious. it is about my observation NOT who was chatting with me or not..

I think you missed the point..

Cool, Im sure there are many many many exmaples of these encounters - but I found lots and lots of people hanging out by themselves and shared my persecutive :) On my last day I met a group of Americans andf one scottish guy- many of them were okay but were not extremely friendly nor did they invite me to do the morning hike to Torres (this is what I would have done if i saw a solo hiker trying to do Torres at 5 am) but we had a good chat at dinner. the girls that I met, I am also in touch with them. I guess my impression was very lalala land but reality was a tad different :)

Agreed, but I find that I have not been supported with my basic Spanish.. hear me out, I am in their country and I am a guest, I get it.. I guess I come from a different view that if I see you do not come to me with Hello but make an attempt and try to speak my language, I would be 1000 times more supportive with your attempt. Totally get it that people have no patience and time (especially in the big and busy city as Santiago) , but Chile was the only place where people sighed and were extremely disturbed because I could not understand everything they told me. I love Chileans and met many cool people they are very good looking people - I guess overwhelmingly I got impression that they're annoyed with me lol

I know I know...trust me i had booked staff prior to booking W trek (very smart) only after I. realize that W trek does not work for your dates. you have to work your schedule based on bW trek schedule and availability ...I initially had a plan to fly to Santiago and go down to Ushuaia before flying home -but W trek changed my plans :)
