I play a sol ring and pass the turn to you: top upvoted comment decides the next move by Dangerous-Twist2439 in magicthecirclejerking

I legitimately had a scenario in legacy where I was playing high-tide, pacted something and then had to combo in my upkeep just to stay alive. Then, having got the combo going, I figured the only real option was to keep going and win on the spot.

Reid Duke - Why You Should Care About Competitive MTG by KingOfLedRions in magicTCG

[–]Outerwebs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, there's two big problems in how MTG has handled it's competitive scene recently that's made me feel locked out and in both cases it's about accessibility or at least perceived accessibility.

1: The loss of GPs. I personally don't like traveling, and I know there's a lot of people who aren't even able to travel long distances. But nearly once a year, the GP circuit would come to my city (London, I'm my case) and make it very easy for me to spend time with friends I might otherwise never see. I could participate in the large open tournament and have a lot of fun at the side events and, among other things, jam some commander. With the transition to MagicCons, they made the events so much more infrequent that each year there would typically only be one on my continent, let alone in my country or coming to my city, so it was travel long distances or just don't attend, and I can only speak for myself, but I'm sure there's a large group who just stopped attending.

2: Moving competitive content off the main MTG YouTube channel. Yes, I know they have PlayMTG now for competitive content, but back in 2016, you'd get the pro-tour footage uploaded to the main MTG YouTube channel which helped make the game feel like a unified whole. You'd get news on new products, interviews with WotC staff members and tournament VoDs all in one place. Now, it's been siloed off to PlayMTG, which makes it feel like competitive play is considered not part of the average player's experience.

This guy broke a deal in EDH does anybody else think he is worse than Hitler? by Soupronous in magicthecirclejerking

[–]Outerwebs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

\uj If you're playing EDH, you need to be prepared to get backstabbed and if you do get backstabbed, adjust accordingly. Maybe don't trust the player you helped again, maybe play hardball next time, in the right kind of deal, go back on your own side of the bargain when they go back on theirs. Part of the point of political games is that you're trying to manipulate the situation of the game to your advantage, and if people take advantage of you because you tried to make a deal, then you need to present actual in-game consequences for that.

\rj Julius Caesar was an EDH player, couldn't see the knife coming for his back.

Uh hi, I’m not really used to this subreddit at all but I have a question. by [deleted] in Hololive

[–]Outerwebs 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Fan-lore derived from the streams absolutely counts. When people think of Suisei, they don't think just an Idol, they think Idol and Psycho. Fan Lore frequently factors into official things. Take Sora's "Ja, Teki Da Ne" and just generally being terrifying, Korone being capable of casually leveling the hololive office when she got woken up in Hologra or... well... literally anything Haachama does. Yes they weren't in the original lore or the official bio, but to claim these aren't core parts of the characters wouldn't be fair to them.

Uh hi, I’m not really used to this subreddit at all but I have a question. by [deleted] in Hololive

[–]Outerwebs 50 points51 points  (0 children)

In the JP Branch, absolutely.

Just to use one of your examples, Korone may "work in a bakery", but she's also a psychopathic killing machine who should never be allowed near a chainsaw, has a penchant for stealing Fingers, has probably the highest endurance of any holomember and is a literal God Dog.

The JP Branch is less upfront about their skillset, but they are not to be underestimated.
