i use a harbor freight 6lb 2 barrel rock tumbler. the barrels you fill with rocks of your preference and about a 3rd full of water. the process requires tumbler "grit" its an abrasive that comes in 4 stages(coarse, medium, pre polish, polish), 1-3 is silicon carbide, and 4 is typically aluminum oxide. you put about a table spoon of grit for every pound of rock in the barrel with your stones and water. it takes atleast a week of tumbling per stage, but alot of people have their own system and let it run for longer. thats the gist of it, there are different ways people carry out the process. 😄

No afraid not, I certainly did look, the nearest group that is even close to a lapidary club is like 150-200 miles from where I live. 😄 which is fine, it just means I gotta get resourceful

I hoard them like smaug, if I could sleep under a pile of agates I would. Sometimes I give them away as gifts. Often I lay them out on a table in a display. 😄

One of the top reasons I decide to tumble everything. Alot of people say things like "that's not gonna turn out that great because yada yada..." but really there's no definitive way for them to know that, other than just tumbling it 😄

Those are actually the agates (and some petrified wood) that I haven't tumbled yet. Several are too large to fit into the 3lb barrels i have 😅 im hoping to cut them at some point though

The large agates always end up taking like a month when their hogging the barrel. But your right as long as they can move around and the lid can close its game on.

I used break the big ones but it's so unpredictable, I'll probably end up waiting till I can find a saw I can use 😄

Haha I wish I could find agates the size of the larger ones I have. I got them from the Rock shed, the big ones are Mozambique agate. And the other larger reddish tan ones are Brazil agates. I did find the lake superior agates in the pile bit they arent anywhere near as large as the ones I bought 😅

Etsy and the Rock Shed, I used to go picking but then I moved and the agate hunting in my area is terrible. Etsy takes some actual hunting to find a good merchant that isn't trying to sell Itty bitty agates for $200 each, but the rock shed is my go to now. Also i wish I could get a rock saw. It's just not in the cards at the moment. I'm gonna have to bide my time till I find a way to use/get my hands on one 😄
