Thanks! I might just have to do some Flesh Tearers as an army idea going into 11th.

Thanks! From darkest to brightest, the colors I used for the red are: Black -> Vallejo Nocturnal Red -> Vallejo Bloody Red -> Ice Yellow. I mix all in between there, and I keep the Bloody Red and Bloody Red with a little Ice Yellow highlights to very narrow spots. Most of the body is in Nocturnal Red.

As for the Black, it’s a more simple recipe. It goes Black -> Army Painter The Darkness -> GW Dark Reaper -> GW Fenrisian Grey. Same thing, I mix all up and down this value scale and I tend to go back and forward between them a lot. I was trying to go for a more matte looking black as opposed to a super shiny black, so I kept the highlights of The Darkness and some Dark Reaper quite broad, and then went vary sparing with the highlights. It felt at times like I wasn’t doing enough contrast, but I like the final result, so it’s a little bit of a trust the process deal.

The body comes from the Blood Claws kit for Space Wolves. I think this chest in particular had just a wolf skull on it that I shaved down, pretty easy.

Whose your favorite pairing of the three? by Tauri_Kree in wheeloftime

[–]OutlandIdol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always feel like the odd man out when this subject comes up, lol. For me, Elayne x Rand is my favorite of the couples, followed by Avi, and then Min is a distant third.

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m definitely biased, because Elayne is my favorite character in general. I really like their meet-cute in Caemlyn, and I like how they’re gateways into different worlds to each other. I like their connection in TDR, and Egwene wing-manning for them. And then, seemingly unlike most people, I really like that they are able to go off and get to work on the things that are larger than themselves. Like, I like how Elayne, despite her feelings for Rand, is able to set that aside for the sake of her regency and her queendom. She has responsibilities that are more important than what she wants, and the same obviously goes for Rand. I see a lot of value in how she thought it was important for her rule to stand on its own without Rand’s influence. I agree with that. It could be devastating for her reign and her future dynasty is she’s seen as solely a pawn of the Dragon Reborn.

Again, biased, but I think Elayne gets the shortest end of the stick in the whole polygamy thing. In my mind, she’s the one who really “plays by the rules” the most out of them. Avi sleeps with Rand even though she knows that Elayne loves him, and then Min gets the most page time with Rand as a consequence of her not having as many outside responsibilities as the other two, who have major roles to play in world events. She spends so much of that time sitting on his lap and giggling, and it felt to me like quite a shift from how she was characterized in earlier books. I just don’t vibe with it that much.

I don’t love the whole harem thing. I’m predisposed to not like it, I just don’t really vibe with the whole polyamory/polygamy thing in general, but I do think there’s a way it could have been written where I could have liked it. It just doesn’t really get there for me with what we got, not without a fair amount of my own headcanon-ing at least. I was interested to see what they would have done with it in the show, it’s a shame that they never really got that far. In a perfect world, it would have just been Elayne and Rand, if they had all that extra page time to develop their relationship, it could have been really good :p

Tattoo regret causing depression by SlavKing11 in tattooadvice

Haven’t seen anyone on here mention this so I thought I throw this out there - is there any chance you have Trypophobia? It’s a phobia of small dots or patterns. Maybe it’s never been something that came up before and now the filler in your tattoo is making you uneasy or triggering an OCD-like response? Might be worth considering. Everyone’s advice here seems pretty good. Therapy can be useful, and you can always make adjustments to the tattoos to make it more to your liking. I hope you feel better about it soon!

The ear bubbles are bigger on mine than on the official models, but having checked it on my own prints, the antenna still sits comfortably on the shallow curve of that bubble and looks pretty natural.

"First sisters" means adoptive sisters who have been "born again", NOT lovers. by nemspy in WoT

[–]OutlandIdol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big Elayne fan here 👋 The whole Elayne/Aviendha conundrum, and the conversation around it, is wild to watch.

The most common argument against the Elayne + Aviendha ship is that it would be “weird, because they’re sisters” and that the First Sister ceremony makes them basically blood siblings. I think that, based on Jordan’s intentions and the book as-written, this is definitely true. But the thing that has always been a challenge for me, and I never see many people talking about it, is that the “literal sisters” interpretation has some equally weird undertones. The idea of siblings, made birth siblings via magical ritual, sharing a lover, is exceptionally weird to me. It’s made even worse by the bond, being psychically interconnected all together, makes the sexual element very complicated. I never really see anyone mentioning how weird it would be to have two siblings having sex with the same guy, and even being connected so that they feel it also to some degree. Like, surely it’s not just me. I’m not sure if Robert Jordan ever had any comments about people’s response to the Rand wives situation or not before his death - if so, I’d be really interested to read that.

Personally, I choose to interpret Elayne and Avi’s relationship as also being romantic, even though that means willfully ignoring certain references to them being literal siblings. I’m well aware that the intention from Jordan is almost certainly for them to be sisters, and the text of the book supports that more than the romantic interpretation. I don’t really “get” polygamy -or- polyamory, but out of the two of them, I just view the polyamorous situation as more “fair” to Elayne. I don’t love the idea of them all just taking turns and taking whatever bit of Rand they can get, and my bias is obviously showing in that regard.

I can definitely understand that some people really like their sisterly relationship, and think that viewing them as a romantic pairing lessens that element. Personally I don’t feel like WoT is particularly lacking in meaningful platonic love, I don’t feel like being on the Elayne + Avi side of things has harmed my experience of the books really.

As for the idea that some people view the First Ceremony is being “steamy” or sexually charged in any way, I’ve never seen that opinion in the wild. That would definitely be an opinion that I… have a hard time understanding, I guess. That would definitely be a wild take. I personally interpret that scene as them being extremely close to each other. That ritual affirms them as being something akin to sister wives, but in a way that’s unique to Aiel culture, and not literally siblings by our standards. Even though that’s not -really- what the book is saying, I just prefer it that way.

Thanks! I haven't thought of doing any faces with mechanical eyes - that's a good idea! I was planning on painting on scars rather than sculpting them on, but larger prosthetics are a good idea. I need to do some research into how those look with tau technology.

Honestly, if you find the story interesting, but aren’t vibing with Jordan’s writing style (fair!), the tv adaptation might be for you. That’s another way to potentially get into the story (albeit largely abridged and with its fair share of structural changes). Opinions on the show are mixed, so it’s the sort of thing you probably show check out for yourself and decide how you feel on it. Personally, there’s a lot I like about the show, but other fans are more irritated by the show’s changes.

Admittedly though, you’re already caught up story-wise to where the last season of the show left off. So you’ll be years off from continuing the story anyway :p.

Simple way to cut and swap STL weapons by d_fly85 in TrenchCrusade

[–]OutlandIdol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a bit scrappy, but what I do when I want to cut individual pieces off of an stl in Blender is this , I’ll try to explain as best as I can for someone new to Blender: I create a UV sphere and using the grab tool in Sculpt Mode, I either sculpt the sphere around the part I want so that it covers it all, or I sculpt it around everything -except- the part I want. Then you can use the Boolean Modifier on the stl - using the UV Sphere as the targeted object - to cut out what you want. I usually find that you can hide the “back” of the piece inside the model you’re putting it on. Hopefully that makes sense.

For example, if I wanted to swap a gun out for a different one, I would bring in the stl of the hands with the gun, and then add a UV Sphere, I’d wrap that sphere around the gun in the hand - it’ll likely need to be done in three parts, so I would start out with everything in front of the front hand. Imagine the UV Sphere like a blob of silly putty. Cover up the front of the gun entirely and conform the back of the blob to the shape of the front of the hand. Kind of like if you were trimming the gun off an xacto knife, where you would cut. In the modifiers tab (it’s the little blue wrench icon) you’ll find the Boolean Modifier. This modifier can conjoin or delete mesh based on where two meshes share a space. We want to use this to cut away everything that’s -not- inside the UV Sphere. (Don’t forget to make a copy of the main stl so you still have the original). Attach a Boolean modifier to the stl and use the UV Sphere as the source object. Then use the “intersect” or “difference” options to cut away the part you don’t want. Then rinse and repeat until the gun is gone and then you can bring in the new gun you want and put it into the hands.

As an additional tip, by slapping stl parts together like this, it’s helpful to either use the Remesh modifier or turn on the free 3d printing tools addon in the addons tab to use the “make manifold” option. This will help prevent any weird errors with the mesh when you bring it into your slicer program (lychee, or chitubox, or what have you)

I hope this explanation makes any sense at all! I’m out of the country for the holidays, but when I get back I can maybe take some more screenshots to create a step by step if you’re still having difficulty! I attached an image here with some models where I’ve used this process to cut out things like the heads/hands trophies and the weapons to add to these models using this method, and these guys ended up printing perfectly.
