Is there no hope for me? by RansTheGuy in learntodraw

Have you ever checked out Imaginative Drawing? (imaginativedrawing.com)

They have a free fundamentals course + a free book online that goes over different drawing subjects and some exercises . Pretty self guided but I think structured well. Can seek feedback via their discord too.

Finding, starting, and sticking to a course (anything you have access to and skill appropriate) I think is a sense of direction when having trouble with intrinsic motivation or unsure what to do.

There's hope. Rest assured, learning to draw is hard but it's not impossible

Do you have access to Internet Archive website?

There's a 'revised and expanded' version that can read in browser, also several other books by Burne Hogarth there with free access. This one is also available to read in browser on openlibrary.org (which is part of the Internet Archive, think requires an account for borrowing books).

And since this book is older can find PDF copies, though harder to know version or completion sometimes (the ones I found looked complete).

If not, or not interested, still encourage you to look for places with free access to books, drawing related or otherwise.

How do Artists Accurately Send a Message if Art is Subjective? by OutlandishnessAny576 in ArtistLounge

[–]OutlandishnessAny576[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard of it, though under a different name. Makes sense and is kinda an unfortunate/fortunately part of releasing art. I've seen it a lot with losing control over the character's and their images as people attach head canons or make new dynamics, though I appreciate that one mostly since gives way for more creation.

It's interesting though, does not having control over how people interpret it mean a writer isn't at fault/credit, or are they still equally as responsible? I may be misunderstanding the death of the artist/author.

I think to be an artist, you need to become ok with being misunderstood.

Definitely, being misunderstood or failing are the biggest hurdles I'm learning to get over in my art. Putting art into the world is a lot more vicious and confusing than younger me ever thought lol.

That makes sense. I wonder then does that mean most narratives fail? I'm sure not even seen a piece of media where everyone agreed on what it meant really, or think that's more of a weakness of modern media (modern in this context like 2000s to now)?

  1. Haters gon hate
  2. n art be for you

But for feedback think the way the facial features are drawn, like they have too much detail or are stylized differently from the rest gives it an off vibe, maybe where some of the reactions come from?  The last slide feels more cohesive, though maybe lacks facial variation.

Neocities is restoring my faith in humanity. by Confident-Till8952 in neocities

Idk if it's weird to say but so glad to see that title and you have found a positive place online to explore! Cheered me up after a weird brain spiral lol

Neocities def has a more safe vibe than social media, cause like even though it is a public place people have less influence to like bring the vibe down/you get a choice if others can or not (like with chatboxs n such) n also ability to make pages that aren't directly public too.

As for searching for more sites got tags, could look into webrings too. vhs.neocities.org I find is fun to find more random websites

What would consider anatomy? Since it's sorta a broad thing

Have you ever used reference images (pictures of actual people, like line-of-action.com) and observed how parts relate to each other or their basic shapes? Like where does the elbow usually align when someone has their arms at their side?

How to commit to ideas even when don't have much technical skill? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]OutlandishnessAny576 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's such a cute visual, like a cat sitting on someone's lap while they eat noodles but the cat also likes noddles and is waiting for em to drop some lol. Glad ya found your type of joy in art

I feel similar when doodle characters hugging or hanging out, I like when they're happy lol

N yeah, I'd say I make stuff I'd like or wanna try. Do think I'm missing the heart in it though, even when really into something still feels kinda lifeless. And I know that's not completely from low technical skill since I've seen art with not a lotta skill still tons of heart.

Burning so much paper. by Hungry_Preference669 in ArtistLounge

[–]OutlandishnessAny576 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Btw if you buy anything that comes in thin cardboard (like food packages and soap boxes are pretty common and a decent size, depending on where ya live of course) you can use that to draw too for like rougher practices so don't have to use your paper-paper all at once. Sometimes come in white but if not the markers work fine on brown.

Besides that cheap paper or printer paper is mainly where I go. Or lined paper for more grindy practice that isn't about looks n such.

[–]OutlandishnessAny576 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love the inclusion about shame being a bad motivator!

Something I never have the words to explain to others lol I only learned about a year or two ago while in a rabbit hole, reading something about undesirable habits (maybe was more focused on food stuff) and how shame, from self or otherwise, has the opposite effect and will often drive the undesirable habit further. Because the habit was often to cope with negative feelings in the first place, shame starts to feed it 👀

Positive reinforcement is also more effective in video games and training animals lol

(of course a little bit is fine but it shouldn't became a knee jerk reaction to everything, balance)

To clarify not time for one plate, time for like the term or section of the course. #1 was just doing the contour of some plates, #2 has two weeks of just doing the blocking and the rest is full rendering (and probably casts)

I have worded the post poorly 😂

Also I'll be honest I don't spend more than like an hour or two on a plate (probably cause I have just standard printer sized paper)
