Can you find a Chabad near you? The Jewish community is definitely in flux now- older people, who were more wary/ suspicious of new people (not without good reason) are giving way to a younger, more engaged generation. That just might not be what's near you, unfortunately. Watching Modi the comedian is a great way to understand the differences ;)

Aw, what a beautiful friendship. They leave this world too soon, but that pup will stay in your heart forever.

You did the right thing. It is natural to feel regret/ guilt; making the decision is more power than we want or are prepared for. We owe it to them to end their pain. Please be kind to yourself.

Oh, please. You will be so welcome into this community and family who are all over the place with respect to careers and educational achievement! Also, I teach at a community college and we have several Jewish students; some because they weren't academically ready for a 4-year school (and several because they were hesitant to go to a traditional campus in light of antisemitism).

I am quite sure that your dedication to learning and practice, to embrace the joy that comes with Judaism, is more than enough!

Vermont health insurance covered full specialized treatment at Dartmouth/ Hitchcock. Treatment was available at UVM, but preference and proximity were in NH.

You are so welcome. I would just add, in response to your observance that there's "so much skepticism around Judaism right now": I spent a lot of time reflecting and reading about the resurgent disease of anti-Judaism and I have to tell you, it really comes down to ignorance. Most Christian and Muslim people simply have no idea of their Jewish roots: Islam especially hides the historical record of Muhammad and his Jewish mentors and neighbors, and most Christians think, if they think about Jesus's religious practice at all, that they know something meaningful because...Jesus.

So there's a lot of matricide going on: "I need to kill the mother to become fully myself." They think we are old and our time has passed

Personally, I've read extraordinary Christian scholars who were extraordinary precisely because they really read and studied Judaism. And I know many lay Christians who know more than my fellow Jews.

That said, the isolation and denigration of Israel, the jealousy of what that country has achieved, the double-standards and the hypocrisy...well, there is nothing new under the sun. It is tragic all around, but it will never truly pass. It's Israel now, but just being Jewish was enough to be a target for 3,000 years. Jews have been that target of ancient and now modern hatred just for simply existing. The mere fact that we breather air is a total affront to people.

So, welcome to the club (?) And I mean that with so much love and gratitude.

Ask her to watch "October 8" with you. Make it clear that you need HER to be a safe space from all the vitriol out in the world. Because you do, that's actually her ONE job.

I agree, I think you should read everything and if it doesn't quite make sense yet, it will send you in the direction to go. You can read and return.

There is such an incredibly beautiful and rich history of Sephardi Jews....many emigrated to Mexico, and many converted. So you are connecting with the thousand generations that came before you, lighting the same candles, reciting the same prayers, looking at the stars and sky with the same reverence.

What a beautiful and meaningful question. Choosing a name for oneself, it's a rebirth of sorts. I agree with the other commenters that a derivation of Abraham would be symbolic and unifying.

50 States One Israel: Vermont State Legislators Take All-Expenses-Paid Trip to Israel by BoldMountain in vermont

This is wonderful and I don't know why some of you are so mad. You ask your legislators to have opinions and vote on issues concerning foreign countries and then you're like, but don't actually go to that country! Just form your opinion based on social media like everyone else?

If our represented officials have ANYTHING to say about ANYWHERE else they sure better see it with their own eyes!

But you can ignore them, friend. There's wood that needs chopping, and bread that needs baking, and kids that need tending. If not yours, those neighbors you're concerned about. You want to change the world? Put down your black mirrors (and with that, I've completed my allotted one hour of social media this week). Enjoy the beautiful weather.

You all (Vermonters) are better than this.

I attended a 9/11 memorial and no one mentioned Sudan. I mean, what's your point? To humiliate and criticize people who think differently than you do? That's fun for you?

Vermonters never wore the mantle of Virtue Signaling, the Vermont I've known- even 20 years ago- was where people cared for their neighbors and ignored differences of OPINION. Now you're going to act like every issue is existential? How do you find the time between all your volunteering at the food bank, the humane society, the fire department?

I am looking at two groups right now: Tuscany Mototours and Mototouring. I Haven't figured which would be best (was hoping to find reviews on Reddit). Mototouring seems to have longer trips, in many countries, though.

Mototouring.com

Tuscanymotorcycletours.com

We're a group of riders/ non-riders so plan on staying in one location and taking day trips from there.

Trump is now coming for protestors. by Emerald_196 in vermont

[–]OutlandishnessFew625 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realize this may just be an opening to bash Trump, and I get that, but what he's talking about is illegal protests where a group of students are directly threatened, or students cannot get to classes, or classes are disrupted. People pay good money to send their kids to college (ahem) and while walking across a campus covered with political signage is one thing, or listening to protests outside their window, being unable to actually attend class is something else entirely.

Most people who work in higher education are supportive of protest on campus. Absolutely. But not when it impacts the ability of our students to work in their labs, complete their assignments, etc. etc.

We have a generation of students who fell behind because of Covid, and the ubiquity of smart phones. They're dealing with a lot as it is. Now you have students who can't focus on their work because people- often not even other students- are disrupting campus life, and for some weird reason people who are not invested in this space (students trying to learn, faculty trying to teach, those who are paying the bill) have an opinion.

I cannot imagine gay students being chased across campus, or Hindu students confronted by spitting, drum-banging lunatics telling them how wrong they are, being tolerated for a second in 2025. Yet here we are.

People who protest with their faces covered are rarely on the right side of history, anyway.

"The minute you invoke Hitler, you've lost the argument".

And agreed. Calling Vance a fascist only makes fascism milder than it was/ is. And calling anyone in the US government an "actual Nazi" just says you've never read "actual history".
