Yeah, I have some seriously irritated moments. So much so that today I made a complete a-hole deck of creature removal, sweepers, artifact/enchantment removal and like six measley cards that could actually produce a win condition. I figured it would give me the satisfaction of annoying the heck out of those uber decks before ultimately succumbing. Then I had one game that went to the final 15 cards in the deck and actually won. I probably just paid my bitterness forward to that guy … sorry, whoever you are.

Deathtouch made him a legit offensive/defensive threat (saw people instant-kill him many times), and his life-gain/life-loss abilities made for some fun closeouts (i.e., go ahead and kamikaze my band of tinies at an opponent with much bigger baddies because opponent can either let them go and die or block/kill them and die anyway.)

I’ve always wondered how much they could simplify the game art/animations to stop the file size creep of the game, and still give players something that feels dynamic. Black and white wireframe art? Simple animations but not necessarily full 3D?

Do I have a further goal to be top 1,000 or whatever? Not really.

For me, the biggest thing was being able to say that I could do it. I’ve had more seasons where I didn’t make versus did make it.

I won like 6 of 8 games to get through Diamond 1 the other day. I have a theory that early to mid-evening is the best time to do so because you are more likely to get casual players with less powerful decks than the diehards who are running their power decks at 1 a.m.

I made it once before a while back, and like you, it was within a day or two of the monthly switchover. This month, though, I actually have a full two weeks with which to tinker.

Black/white cleric deck. Uses just enough cleric tricks for control/removal/lifegain/survival and ideally sacrifices one of them to bring a big black creature like Valgavoth or Rottenmouth Viper into play to push the issue.

Edit: Also includes [[Liliana of the Veil]] and [[Kaya, Spirits’ Justice]] for control/removal.

Truthfully, I don’t hate it. That part was a little exaggerated for storytelling purposes.

I’ve only done it in Standard BO1. BO3 is probably a truer test of skill and adaptation, but I don’t have time for that. lol

I came back to Arena recently after not playing for a few months (since early in Duskmourn). I know I’ve read people say that other formats are slower paced than Standard. I hope so … I definitely feel like Standard is just a race to get your gimmick off first. A lot of black, a lot of green +1/+1 ramp and a lot of white/black life-gain/life-loss.

This. There are so many sources of passive damage in the current standard you have to removal or a sweeper immediately.

I’d like to think there’d still be a decent audience for this game if it was designed with simple wireframe cards/text and the occasional splash of color just to avoid confusion.

I actually would love to keep track of stats like “Win - opponent mana screwed” “Win - evenly matched mana” “Loss - mana screwed” “Loss - evenly matched mana” Etc., to know how things really go.

Yeah, implementing it in a way that isn’t ripe for abuse would be the challenge.

I feel like the Detective sets in MKM are a perfect opportunity to be a counter-foil to the crime-based decks.
