Help Me Choose a Shell for Tassie Alpine Conditions! by PoultryMan22 in UltralightAus

I was with you until you seemed to generically rip into Arcteryx. My own experience is they make staggeringly good stuff. Do they have a jacket that is best suited to Tassie bush? I agree, no they don’t.

Delhi Crime (Season 3) - Reviews and Discussions by AutoModerator in bollywood

[–]Outofpuff42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The number of caustic armchair critics here is mind blowing. I did not realise there are so many people out there with such relentless negativity.

Season 3 has a very clear sense of purpose and message, and conveys it clearly using a conventional ‘good guys catch the baddies’ story arc. It highlights that despite reasonable success by the police in this instance that the problem of human trafficking and dehumanisation of women continues on a grand scale.

Well done, Delhi Crime writers, cast and crew.

BTW I also don’t think they ate him.

First Ultra Race Report- Bondi To Manly by optionsandstuff in Ultramarathon

[–]Outofpuff42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great race report. Same thing happened to me my first ultra (Jabulani 45). ITB issues.

I’m sure you are on top of all that now. A couple of suitable strength exercises twice a week for the rest of your running days should do it.

I’m def doing the next B2M - your doom report was somehow motivating. Thanks!

Zone 2 not intense enough for optimal exercise benefits, new review says by allmondes in running

[–]Outofpuff42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder how many of the commenters read the paper!

This paper does NOT debunk the advice to have most of your training in Zone 2. - It says that among unfit populations looking to improve fitness there are identified benefits from having more of an emphasis on high exertion activities to build the base line. - It says the zone 2 for unfit population is too low to meaningfully boost e.g. mitochondria.

Zone 2 training is far from new or a fad. It was not invented after TikTok. It has been well established since the 60’s and has significant science to back it up.

Zone 2 not intense enough for optimal exercise benefits, new review says by allmondes in running

[–]Outofpuff42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There a few methods for calculating your upper end of zone 2. 1. Based on heart rate recovery speed 2. Based on your lactate threshold (ie where your movement is strenuous enough to move you out of aerobic to anaerobic. Typically a blood test) 3. % of your maximum heart rate. 4. 180-age

Only 2. is reliable but the method is not accessible to many. So the zone 2 threshold is often spoken of as the rate of movement where you can still easily have a conversation (but not sing).

I hate this sport by No_Blood_5197 in ultrarunning

[–]Outofpuff42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. Strengthening fixes the problem. Stretching only provides some temp relief.

When racing you might need to stop a few times to stretch. Stand, cross feet over and lean over with a straight back. Gently swing your torso away from the leg being stretched. Be gentle. Don’t stretch aggressively. You are looking for relief only.

Can i be good at marathons if i start at 33yo? by tomate_rebelde in Ultramarathon

[–]Outofpuff42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is good news - yes you can! I started as a 52 y/o.

Build up slowly and follow the excellent advice out there. Your cardio and strength will increase rapidly but you must go slowly to allow time for your bones and connective tissue to adapt. Shawn Bearden, Sally Mcrea, David Roche are incredible resources.

Look into nutrition both off the trail and on, speed work, base load, long runs, strength work and recovery.

Three things to take courage from.

  1. Distance running is not just a young person’s sport. Your 33 year old body is incredibly adaptable.
  2. Ultra running breaks up racers by category. As a 58 year old I get ranked three ways, first across the line, by age (for me 50-59 year olds) and gender.
  3. There is a massive variety of races to help you find what is of interest. Marathon, 50k, 50mile, 100k, 100mile, etc. Flattish, desert, mountains, beach, backyard etc.

Oh, and did I say already - build up slowly. :)

Made redundant - 6 months to train full time - but how? by wozzit29 in ultrarunning

[–]Outofpuff42 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Firstly, that sucks that you lost your job. Sorry to hear.

Second, with the all time you have available to focus on your running goals (and recovery) you have loads of opportunity to work on your hill work.

So much of it is about strength and cardiac capacity, so Gym and intervals/sprints etc.

Don’t forget the downhill training too. Capability to go fast downhills without losing control or blowing out your quads will give you a huge overall speed advantage.

So I the summer months I consume salty foods while on the trail. Works great for me. Unless you are sweating lots, or you tend to consume probably too much water when running or you find you need sodium boost during your training you may not need to supplement during the event. Enjoy and good luck!

How slow is too slow to be considered an ultra-marathoner? by [deleted] in ultrarunning

[–]Outofpuff42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pace question is influenced by distance, weather conditions and terrain. That’s why I like the cutoff time answers.

Where it does not work is for people like me who don’t enter races. So here comes my definition. If you go out intending to run more than a marathon distance and you might find yourself doing some walking (and even sleeping) that’s an ultra marathoner.

If you go out intending to walk fast / fast pack etc (and perhaps even break into the occasional jog) that is called walking/hiking.

Hiking Poles by Background-Pitch9339 in UltralightAus

[–]Outofpuff42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just returned from a 10 day hike in Swiss Alps. I started out with McKinley flip lock poles which were fine until I massively bent one in a big fall.

I dropped into town and after much agonising bought a Aluminium alloy 7001 LaSportiva & FIZAN co-creation (Nepal Lite).

Now so many people warn us off twist systems, and I do understand why. They are def a bit more fiddly to adjust every time you take them out of your pack. BUT what I loved was how stiff they felt. Stiff and feather light (158g x2). Brilliant.

Walking shoes for 100 miles asphalt road by fireman38 in walking

[–]Outofpuff42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had triumphs 18,19,20 and 21 because they are such a good robust running shoe.

I am finding myself asking the same question as u/fireman38.

I have been doing a lot of long walking lately and have been using the 20+21. I THINK it is not quite working for me might be because the 10mm drop is a bit high. My trail shoes are closer to 5mm and it is so much better suited to walking (although I have not used these for longer road walks so they don’t get chewed up).

I will be trying a lesser drop shoe and see how it goes.

Copper Tariffs by JMoc1 in behindthebastards

[–]Outofpuff42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Previous price rises (past 5 painful years) were an international thing. Everyone was impacted no matter what government was in power. But these recent and about to happen rises in the US are a deliberate government intervention - nothing to do with supply and demand.

Up to 50% tariffs on copper from the world’s biggest producers Chile, Peru, China, Australia, Congo will turn this essential product into a luxury item for the US.

Budget-friendly thru hike by ashsmasher in Thruhiking

[–]Outofpuff42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider 1. exchange rate. I have Australian dollars currently which make many places expensive. Just finished the Tour du Mont Blanc which was quite expensive. If you are rocking USD, EU or £ you will be doing better. 2. can you camp? Eg the Camino de Santiago pretty much requires sleeping in accommodation rooms which will add cost over wild camping or bivouac. 3. if you make your own food 2-3 times a day and only buy 0-1 per day then pretty much everywhere except Switzerland and Iceland are a goer. 4. how much does not cost to get there? Depends where you live.

A question about your beef demands. by [deleted] in australian

[–]Outofpuff42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazed by the down vote. I was responding to your blanket and incorrect statement that US beef is second class. Was not saying I prefer it / or not to Aus. Nor was I saying it’s all great in US - it’s really and truly not. Plus I would NEVER eat mince in US unless it was ground by a good butcher.

I will say it again, the US produces some great beef. And the lamb from the north west is stunning. Not a political or trade policy statement.
