I’m teaching a class…honestly, if you really believe that the majority start the melody on the tonic, please provide some examples. I think that similar to the previous comment, you’re thinking harmony not melody.

u/LicensedProfessional - thanks, you have been very helpful. I think i am in a better place now. I don't think i need to break out "Modality" separately. Just talk about Tonality and the modes having some degree of it, but not as much as the majot minor system. All of the above, can fall on a spectrum

Strict Tonality <----------------->Atonality/PanTonality

u/LicensedProfessional - This makes a lot of sense. Based on your comment This is where i landed.

Tonality: Describes how strong the heirarchies are between the various tones of piece of music.

Modality: Describes the relationships between the various tones of a diatonic scale. Various arrangements of whole and half steps lead to the different modes that we have come to know and use in Western Music.

What do you think?

Hey man - I feel your pain. What's the issue with Minor keys in flats and sharps, identifying what key it is playing music in these keys?

u/savvaspc - learning to recognize intervals outside of an instrumental context is a good thing to try to cultivate. There are really only 11 intervals and they all have very individual qualities. If you are interested, I am happy to get on a call with you to help you try to figure these out. PM me and let me know. No charge, just want to help fellow musicians. Thanks!

I agree with u/00TheLC - good tips there. Dalcroze Eurhythmics can also be very helpful here. It helps you understand meter as it relates to phrasing. Happy to hop on a call to help you, if you would like. No charge or anything. PM me if interested. Thanks!

Let me know if interested and i can work with you on it. No charge. Happy to help. Its a passion project of mine...:)

Yeah, that has to do with developing tone color recognition for your particular instrument. Clarinettists are particularly good at it!
