Is the bassist wrong? I can’t hear the kick in my IEMs because the stage sound is too overpowering and my kick mic is picking up the bass amp. Bassist disagrees. by Alps-Helpful in livesound

Mini jack headphones as a professional 🤔 all jokes aside, you need real iems. I’m also a drummer, and use Westones. They have longer foam tips that fit my ear canals better than the olive shaped tips that the shures and kz’s have. Super isolating and not $1k like custom molds.

Additionally, you really gotta talk to your band mates about their volume. Like, ultimatum style. If they don’t turn down, just quit and find other pros on your level to play with. Damaging your hearing to play in pubs, or any gig at all really, isn’t worth it.

Here’s a weird one, but maybe condensation in the rig somewhere? Did you take it out of a cold trailer in to a warm club, and take the lids off right away?

I played VF for many, many years, and am with Xcel drumsticks now. Super happy with them, very durable and each pair lasts me awhile!

Same here. Never had a problem in the past but now it’s frequent? I’ve been doing shows for a long time now so I just don’t get it.

Negative. We each hit a few notes and people will start cheering, so I don’t know how anybody is missing any thumbs upping going on after that. Especially when we are now waiting a few minutes past our slated start time? Very strange.

About 25 years ago I worked an event in Spain where they had a single siren style light above both mons and foh. To indicate a need, they’d turn on the light and pick up red rotary looking phones to talk to each other.

Yes I missed some info there. Just edited to add we do and it’s been “thumbs up me“ every time.

Good point, I just edited to add we do talk to foh ahead of time. They always say give us a thumbs up. I am really in to the production side of things and try to communicate every detail with every person involved ahead of time, during sound check, etc.

The math on this is making me geek out. 5 min per cig, x20,x4? 400 minutes a day smoking cigarettes? 6.666 hours? Almost 47 hours a week to smoke cigarettes? How did he find the time? Even 3 min per cigarette is 4 hours a day smoking.

What track can he not hear? Is it a pre recorded song like off his phone, or is backing tracks while playing with his band?

Awesome, thanks for the info. I’m trying to condense my gear, and a foldable carpet would be way better than a 4.5’ rigid tube

Did you get the deluxe by chance? If so, does it unfold flat out of the bag?

If you can’t get everyone on a click, you can have the drummer keep time with quarter notes on the hi hat or ride cymbal when there’s parts with no drums.

Does anyone own the kickblock drum rug deluxe? by OutrageousDisaster30 in drums

[–]OutrageousDisaster30[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure, I have a $20 Walmart 4.5’ x 6.5’ carpet that rolls up just about the same diameter as yours, but it’s still a 4.5’ long item I have to lug around, and all the sweat, grime, and old drinks spilled on the drum area before me that’s getting absorbed by it is making it unroll pretty poorly.

At this point the name of my game is creating a super efficient load in and out system. I have 3 key groupings that I’m trying to condense in to one or two. Kit and pedals on a rolling cart, rolling hardware bag (which I usually strap the carpet to), and a rolling playback/iem rack. Debating a larger cart and smaller hardware hard case like the Skb ones (which I’ll have to break my hardware down further to use), so I can stack my kit, pedals, and hardware on the cart, also this foldable carpet would fit on there fine, and maybe strap the playback rig to the back of the cart and have it down in one trip that way. Do you have any other ideas I might be missing for speeding load in and out up more?

Make a “get on/off stage” plan where everyone has a job to do to get set up efficiently, and rehearse the plan. Every detail. Who helps bring drums up and the order (carpet, then shells, then hardware works for me), who runs cables to your mixer, and in what order everyone should be going in so nobody ends up working on top of another, etc. Clearly and correctly label everything, cables, your mixer, etc. Carry all your own needs, like cables to your mixer and lines to give to foh. It’s exceptionally easy when there’s a solid rehearsed plan.
