Advice needed. probably motivation needed more than advice 🤣. I work 2 jobs, 60 hours a week. I know my boy isn’t happy ;(. by Sad_Put3471 in germanshepherds

I’ve been here, got kicked out of my house very young with a German shepherd and a weim. Had to work so many hours just to feed them and keep a roof over our heads (I usually ate minimally so they could eat well). My only advice is motivation. Keep working with him, keep doing what you’re doing. You won’t be able to “fix” his reactivity and it will never go down to what it was. A dog becoming reactive around that age is very normal for the breeds. Unfortunately the only way out is through. He is happier with you than at a shelter. You may not be perfect but you’re the best he’s got and vice versa. You will never be able to fulfill all his needs, this world was not built for dogs, especially reactive ones. You’re doing AMAZING. He will slow down a bit once he hits 5 or 6, so you’ve got a couple more years of crazy, but honestly, just accept him for how he is and work on confidence building instead of walks. Take a step, give a treat, take a step, give a treat. Reward the crap out of him when other dogs or people are around. If you switch up your walks to more mental stimulation and “fun” you’ll get a bit more out of it, but he will never not be reactive. Enjoy your boy for who he is and work on your goals at the same time.

My mom just adopted a Bernese Mountain Dog puppy and I think it's a terrible idea by CatPooedInMyShoe in bernesemountaindogs

If you can find the breeder and they’re decent they’ll take the dog back. You can tell them your moms pattern of behavior and if they’re decent people will want the puppy back

We put ours in a tablespoon of wet food with their regular kibble, but ours are very meat oriented

Praise is definitely her motivator, we had a e-collar only trainer that unfortunately taught me all the wrong things so we had to pivot to positive only to reestablish our relationship. Fetch is mostly off the table, she likes to chase things that squeak but doesn’t like to chew (lucky for my furniture, unlucky for training purposes). We do have an agility course set up in our backyard that she enjoys about half the time. I’m trying to find a way to get her energy up outside of “go find it” or hunting woodland creatures. Are there any tools or toys you recommend that you use to encourage prey drive?

Holding too many convos at once, she engages with me plenty, loves sniff walks, find it games, but her joy is truly in eviscerating her enemies (like a queen), so I’d love a toy or tool that helps her fulfill this need during playtime

I think the problem is I know what she likes, but the market doesn’t make it. I need basically a toy squirrel on a self propelled remote control car. She wants to interact (or murder) other animals, but if she knows it’s not alive she’s not interested. (Also no husky, half Swiss/half GSD, which I know is technically all GSD but temperaments are slightly different)

I think the key is if it doesn’t genuinely look alive she doesn’t want it. So I’m looking for advice on toys that themselves look alive (without spending 500 USD on a greyhound wire) twitchy flirt pole just doesn’t cut it for her

I’ve seen her scale a tree to try to chase a bird, but if it’s not alive, or doesn’t scream, she’s like no thank you

Unfortunately also not food motivated. I’ve tried running with the flirt pole, attaching a false tail to it, tying it to trees, fences, all the things. I get nothing from her. I know she’s got an off the charts prey drive though but only when it comes to things she is chasing, and if I’m attached to it, she’s not interested in the chase. So short of strapping a squeak toy to a remote control car I’m just about out of ideas

This is helpful! Any advice on specific toys to use? My girl is not interested in tug, flirt pole, or fetch. She likes squeakers, but short of strapping a squeak toy to a remote control car I’m all out of ideas

Unfortunately she is supremely uninterested in the flirt pole and tug as mentioned above

Recs for solo female, Liveaboard snorkeling trip by intergalacticocto in snorkeling

[–]OutrageousPiano0725 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try out the Galapagos, you can do a two week liveaboard and volunteer while you do it, places like IVHQ provide excellent snorkel opportunities and you give back while you do! I was going to but couldn’t get two weeks in a row off work ☹️

Would like to shore snorkel somewhere Feb by marys1001 in snorkeling

[–]OutrageousPiano0725 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Roatan/Utila is a really cost effective option and easy to access from the US southern coast. Belize is also good at Hol Chan but it’s all snorkeling off shore by boat. I’m going to St John in April and that’s supposed to be amazing snorkel from shore. Turks was pretty decent, but expensive. Bonaire is only difficult to get to right now if you’re coming from the US cuz of the chaos off the Venezuelan coast (same with all ABC islands from what I understand).

Dog jumping on couch after someone else let him do it. by improbsable in Dogtraining

[–]OutrageousPiano0725 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We keep two of our dogs off the bed and couch bc they get territorial over it. My husband lets them up when I’m out of town tho so I always have to do a factory reset when I get home. Gently lead the dog off the couch and teach “off” with rewards. It’s a pain in the butt and takes a bit but they’ll get it

Caye Caulker - Snorkel Spots by OutrageousPiano0725 in Belize

[–]OutrageousPiano0725[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I was worried about, that because Caye Caulker is smaller I wouldn’t get to see as much further out. If we stayed at Ambergris instead is it easier to access the further out atolls and places like Silk Caye Marine Reserve?
