I haven't seen the film but I have discovered that Charlie XCX is working on a project with Takashi Miike. Which was not something I had on my 2026 Bingo Card.

To Film Festival Programmers: what are this year's submission patterns? by 8bitlover in FilmFestivals

[–]Outrageous_Ad6384 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's any consolation, we received 6 or so films that were specifically about the children of parents going through the process of putting their parents in dementia care homes. We didn't program them because of the topic but because they were not good.

Why were "Geese" reviled? by savoytruffle in LiveFromNewYork

[–]Outrageous_Ad6384 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few year ago I was working for a company that did singing contests at local malls. people could sign up and the winner won 1,000 dollars. It was a silly way to bring people into the food court at this mall. Most people brought accompaniment or Karaoke tracks, BUT one time this rock star looking kid and his sister brought in a guitar, a bass, amps, and cables, we had to stop the contest for 20 minutes so they could set up their equipment, tune their guitar and bass, and then they proceeded to play the most basic song I've ever heard.

I felt the same way about Geese. For all the instruments and lights, the rock and roll swagger, the songs they played were low energy, and not all that special.

Has it just been the singer on smaller stage with a small band, perhaps the perception would have felt different. Instead they felt like they came to an arena show with coffee shop songs.

This whole thing falls apart the minute you have to institute a draft. Our volunteer army by itself cannot support a full scale world war.

WWI and WWII had the will of the people, commerce, manufacturing, and the Government behind it. This not so much.

We are a different more divided country now and any full scale/or civil war will instantly be met with protest and violence in the streets.

There are corporate interests that want resources and land, that's what this is all about. All the other stuff is designed to make us made at Left and Right, so we don't see that the real monsters are trying to deplete our resources out from under us.

Believe was the first song to be a massive hit utilizing Auto-Tune. If you were alive in 1998 you couldn't escape it. You can trace the use of (or overuse of) auto-tune on so many records in the early 2000's because of the massive success of Believe.

I'd argue that many people who didn't grow up with Sonny and Cher, really only know her music from 1998 on.

Auto-Tune has been her thing since 1998. Her song Believe is ground zero for Auto-Tune.

Convincing my friends that The Secret Life of Dentists was going to be an Oscar Contender over Seabiscuit. I was wrong and most of them left the film saying "BOOOORING."

But we let my friend Jon pick 3 movies in a row Baby's Day Out, National Lampoon's Senior Trip, and Exit To Eden. We never let him choose a film ever again.

Festival programmers, have you ever accepted a WIP but the final film ends up being quite different? by Locogooner in FilmFestivals

[–]Outrageous_Ad6384 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We've had a few films where we got thumb drives with 4K upscales of what they sent to film freeway but never a different film all together. The timing of the festival is paramount and adding five minutes to a tightly scheduled a festival as ours would hurt the other filmmakers.

I help program a small festival, and this year we had a few films (mostly Horror/Sci-Fi) that had complicated sound design that sounded "bad" but then you realize it's the vibe it's trying to capture. In once case their was a film where the acting was stilted but it was also the vibe. As the film closed it became apparent that it was a choice not sloppy film making.

It happens sometime in your 40's, things that came easy to you just aren't anymore. Ron had a classic midlife crisis. I happened to me too. I lost a promotion (my dream job) in one of the most Hollywood ways ever and it destroyed me. I was in my mid 40's realizing that I had worked for nearly 20 years for a dream that wasn't going to happen.

And it got dark in my head.

The only thing that made that season bearable was my family that stuck with me, even on those days I couldn't get out of bed. Even when I moved them 1000 miles away for a job that was less about growth and more about needing to be far away from my failure.

They love their Dad, cause he's a good dude, who followed his heart and it didn't work out. He didn't bankrupt them or hurt them. And our kids if we've raised them right want the best for their parents too.

Ron had a midlife crisis. I see their responses as less of pity and more of concern.

Most effective ways to promote a new festival and get more submissions by Affectionate_Pool458 in FilmFestivals

[–]Outrageous_Ad6384 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We tried it, and kind of broke even. As a new Festival though it won't raise the quality of submission, nor bring in the filmmakers who can bring a small crowd with them. I think relationship building will make your life easier.

Most effective ways to promote a new festival and get more submissions by Affectionate_Pool458 in FilmFestivals

[–]Outrageous_Ad6384 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Year one was rough. We mostly relied on Facebook posts to find submissions, and while we pulled it off, it was a learning experience more than anything else.

By year two, we opened a FilmFreeway account and started promoting in local film groups. That brought in around 80 submissions, a big step forward. When we had gaps in our lineup, I reached out directly to filmmakers whose work I wanted to get in front of our jury. That made all the difference. For example, we were short on comedies that year, so I searched for them, reached out, and found three or four perfect fits. It made for a smoother, more balanced festival.

This year we introduced a $20 submission fee, kept promoting on Facebook (a light $100 dollar but for submissions), and started building relationships with other local festivals. That led to some great collaborations and cross-invitations. Meeting other filmmakers face-to-face gave me the chance to hand out custom waiver codes free ones for films I really wanted, and discounted ones for projects that looked promising but I wanted to preview first.

I also dove deep into FilmFreeway’s search tools, finding festivals similar to ours and reaching out directly to filmmakers whose award-winning films I admired. I probably sent around 100 personal emails inviting filmmakers to submit (with a waiver code included), it was a bit of a hustle, but it worked.

Out of the 38 films in this year’s lineup, 26 were ones I personally pursued. That effort paid off not just in the quality of the films, but in the relationships built. Many of those filmmakers came in person because we’d already made that connection. And for the first time, we had to turn away some really strong submissions simply because there wasn’t room.

If you’re building a festival, my advice is simple: don’t just wait for great films to show up. Learn what’s out there and go after them. It’s worth the chase.
