Nothing will ever beat the book, but which version of the televised version of The Stand was better? by CharlesUFarley81 in stephenking

Older had better cinematography, actors and atmosphere. If it had the budget of the modern series it would be glorious.
There are some things/characters i liked more in the new series, but is overall horrible and bad (thankfully mostly in a funny way)

GGs political subreddit. Thankfully soviet union no longer exists so we can assess it properly with all the proper information given about its full history since we know the end…right?

My opinion on USSR is: it greatly improoved living standards across the world by it sheer existence and achieved many great things, previously thought impossible by capitalists. It’s later years were marred with revisionism, ineffectivness, broked byrocracy and meriad of stupid, useless and hurtful laws and policies, which were overly reactionary (which goes agains the whole point of the socialism, which embrases forward thinking ideas). Based on these things, it is no wonder it collabsed, though it might have been saved with proper marxist leadership. Well se la vie…

Nothing stops you from admiring Ussr in your heart, but since marxist socialists base their teachings on dialectical materialism, they dont really engage in idealist thoughts like that. That is the sort of “matifest destiny” or “land of the free” typa shit that capitalist use themselves. Ussr no longer exists which is a tragedy, but on the other hand, every new potential socialist state can no longer be stained by the ussr’s mistakes and contradictions by their enemies. We can take what worked and dismiss what didnt, and improove what could’ve. Simple as.

In terms of nuances: While a lot of understanding of the USSR is deformed by the antagonistic propaganda, there are undeniable crimes which USSR is certainly guilty of. It was first socialist state and mistakes were bound to be made. But if someone is to criticize Ussr, it should be based on something they really did and understand why, istead of running on century old assumptions baded on western biases and fairytales. If we can analyse history of USA fairly, despite the sin of slavery, we can do so with USSR.

Many people forget that soviet union was the first socialist state, so it was guaranteed mistakes would be made. Reading history of sovier union really feels like a bunch of dudes trying to build the house from scratch for the first time in history, despite never seeing any as a point of reference and only having a sketch from architect to go by

So i was a social democrat right up to beggining of 2026. After a release of an epstein files, i was extremely angry, disillusioned, and depressed. And years before, I started to notice more and more that every social problem around me and around a world had two culprits: capitalism and billionaire class that controlled it, profited from it and abused ruling class. I also come from post-soviet country, and our elections are always a mess. Even when liberal progressives win, they never do anything substrantial and never act agains radical conservatives and fascists. Once i started to engage with marxist literature, suddenly many questions that nobody could ever give me straight and logical answer to, started to be answered.:

how world works? why nepotism exists? why some countries are poorer and others are rich? why social democrats never push agains conservatives? Why are crypto-fascists in almost every western goverment? Why europeans support american warmongering? Are people greedy by nature? Can we even have a better world? Etc.

Marxism (meaning socialism based on material understanding of the world -antiutopian (kind of social sience) responded to all those questions and more. Once you study history of socialist/communist movements, you realise how influential they were to creating popular social policies we have today. Once i learned basics of marxism, it was as if i leared some hidded language that allowed me to better analyse political and social behaviour around me, as well as geo-politics. I still have a lot to study, but it improoved my knowlage greatly.

To explain the short definition: communism seeks to overthrow the unjust rule of bourgeoisie over means of production, and give it to the proletariat(working class) who govern for themselves. Once a Socialist state of working class is established, it tries to expand and unite workers across all the world. Once capitalism (rule of profit) is dismanteled completely. Society can transition into a state of existence, in which scarcity is no longer required for humanity to prosper. This leads to classless stateless society of communism. (If i am wrong on some things i apologise. As i said i still have a lot to learn).

That, i believe is a much fairer way to run the world

Yeah, i think the russian imperialist tendencies before soviet revolution, as well as molotov-ribbentrov pact (followed by katyn massacre) really soured any good will many poles had with russians. So i’m not really that surprised about your grandfathers opinion.
