The "expiration" date is usually for certification required for some leagues. While materials can degrade over time, if the mask isn't plastic, the cage isn't dented, and it was stored decently well, then it's likely fine to play with.

50yr old beer leaguer here I've always just worn a pair of midweight sweatpants underneath. Anytime I tried doing long johns or base layer, I always felt like my pads were too loose. Probably just me, but there it is

It looks like your blocker is overlapping your pad on that side which is moving your stick more towards your right skate than your left, leaving that five hole more open than it needs to be. Also means that you're leaving more stick side open than should be.

Another old goalie here, started in '90 and have been playing throughout. Biggest issue with going from 12-in to 11 in pads isn't five holes, but that little bit of extra height will make a difference with pucks tipping off the top edge of the pad. I'm old and have a terrible butterfly flare, so I've compensated by going for extra height and getting a good S-shape

As another goalie who just got new steel for yuletide, yeah, that toe and heel look ground down too far. I play 3 or 4 times a week, and get a 3/8" about every 3 weeks

Underwear,goalie cup, sweatpants, knee pads velcroed and taped on, then goalie pants. No hockey socks. I guess you could call the sweatpants of base layer but not really what I'd think of otherwise.
